  • Nicely done!

  • @jessupar: I guess it is up to the vigilant "we" to keep playing the music that has soul and inspired us so those coming up have the chance to learn as we did...but they have to have the "want to " to discover it and appreciate it as we did and still do . They will. Soon come.

  • Cara,tenho disco de vinil de "Mississipi John Hurt,poder ve-lo cantando,é demais!!!!Valeu,meu velho!

  • @zoretta1 of course he's not a blues singer he's got a computer an he can afford broadband an he knows how to upload a video but it still sounds nice eh.

  • it works for me pall you've got the rhythm of his picking just about bang on thank you I enjoyed listening.

  • I have never seen this wonderful photo before. Thanks for posting it. (Are you in open E or open D tuning?

  • What al loveley song, i have the original vinyl,..it is different, softer to this, love it so long time a go!!!

  • Dude... sorry to say but, you ain't John Hurt

  • Decent. Change the title to how it's a "cover" though.

  • 5THAT WAS NICE

  • Nice photos. I like your cover. You sound very good. I do wish you had put 'cover' on your title when you choose. I didn't see cover until I had already pulled this up. I think that is why there are so many negative comments. As I said earlier, I have enjoyed your music and you are quite good. Thanks for the posting.

  • Actually you sound good, most white guys stuggle to sound Black and the dreadful immitation is always evident, you sound quite natural!

  • pure delta blues by one of the great black artist......beautiful...

  • Not the best. Not the worst. misleading and therefore, Jive Turkey!

  • It takes a lot of work to do a great, or even credible version of a classic. Good Job. Best cover of Pay Day I have heard. Maybe like Jack Elliot doing Dylan, or Dylan doing Woody.

  • great cover man

  • NOW I KNOW WHERE BECK GOT HIS IDEAS FROM.

  • That's OK. It would be a nice of you to add "cover" in the title.

  • why does this video have 24 thumbs down? either way... gorgeous. John Hurts so smooth. Him and Skip James are very relaxin and easy-listenin in a way

  • you really got the blues, man!

  • damn it man! thats alright though

  • no misleading...this is the Sh**

  • simple but good guitar sound, and voice. I like your version.

  • @deaconbrandonreeves had you taken the time to read the description you wouldnt have been "mislead"

  • Skip James & Mississippi John Hurt on the same pic. Where is Robert J ?

Well, just a common day on Blues Olympus. Nice version, btw, meet you at Zigzagzig 's joint?

  • @2quundar "Skip James & Mississippi John Hurt on the same pic. Where is Robert J "?

You're out of luck on that one, bud. But, as a consolation, you might be happy to know that there is one of Skip James, John Hurt and Son House together!!

  • skip james in the photo?

  • Great tribute Brother..I own a small bar and would have you play anyday, nice vibe!

  • this is really good. your vocal style is great.

  • excelent song

    5*****

  • So not John's voice but it still sounds awesome!!

  • and thats skip james at right, right?

  • Yup thats ol' skip

  • Nice job. Trying to work out some MJH myself. Not easy to get that fingerpicking down.

  • This is really good! ;D

I wanted to hear something by John; but I didn't mind at all considering the quality this has.

  • Outstanding, please post more. Such a special sound. Really good. Unique. Love the sound of that deep drone coupled with the percussive melody.

  • nice interpretation of JH's song - too bad you misrepresented the posting - I really wanted to hear john not you - make it right and try singing falsetto to be truer to original

  • thanks for the info m8!

    cheers

  • You do realize the only reason you got that many hits is because of your misrepresentation? Try this..... keep the picture if you want which will help and relabel the song to say Jessupar plays John Hurts Pay Day and then you will get some real feedback.. ....Try it.... I challenge you! Sorry if this seem harsh I'm not from America and in my country we would never do this! Al Frisby New Orleans, Louisiana

  • God well done. Keep on with that groove. Dont mind the naysayers, Keep on enjoyin it my brother.

  • solid instrumentation, jessupar. it retains the mellow country feel and haunting intonation of hurt's original version. the song is twangy in all the right places and the fingerpicking mostly spot on. sadly, no one will be able to achieve the deeply baleful but gentle and wholly unique voice hurt possessed, save for the man himself.

  • you know whats amazing, blues is one of the only set of videos where i don't read bizarre arguments that dont even match the title

  • i LOVE JOHN HURT HE'S THE COOLEST!

  • this is pretty fantastic

  • Nice work my friend.

  • Thats great man.

  • i was born too late. this is talent. you got it or you don't. no sound equipment to bail you out.

  • Thanks! Keep posting! :^D

  • This is better than any song i have heard recently with all the modern technology that we have.

  • Yeah music and tech dont really mix too well... granted some of it can sound kind of cool, i'd rather hear one acoustic guitar play just about anything than the music that's coming out now.

  • couldn't agree more.i can just imagine sittin'at nite by the fire listening to this.

  • This is a good version of this old classic. Keep posting them..very nice.

  • Great Job, sounds good . After reading some of the comments. Next time you might want to put cover at the end of the

description title. Thanks , for Keeping It

    Real.......TxKoyote

  • not mississippi john hurt

  • I thought that was evident by the description, but no. its me trying to play it on a guitar with 5 strings on it if i recall correctly.

  • thanks alot man for this, have you got anymore where that god awful woman isnt playing the banjo and singing? again thans=ks alot

  • god awful woman playing a banjo and singing...? what are you talking about.

  • Can you upload the Mississippi John Hurt version on Youtube? Would love to hear that!

  • i would, but i dont want to risk getting my youtube account shut down for having copywritten stuff on here. this account is just for videos of me.. or in this case,.. audio.

  • But you know immitation is flattery. I play Johns stuff too. Would you rather I copy Mylie Cyrus?

  • I got over it and after checking out your repretior quickly I'm now a subscriber. Good stuff. Hours of listening here for all.

  • COVER OF should precede your title.

  • yeah i guess it should be. its in the description however.

  • very very well done, and i am highly critical.

nice and soulful for a young man!

    put some more up!!!

  • Short of Hurt himself, this is the best version of the song I've heard. Well done.

  • wow, thanks alot.

  • listen to stefan grossman if you want to hear it as good as it gets aside from john himself

  • haven't heard stefan grossman sing this but it would be hard to bead Guy Davis version

  • You go, dude! Good stuff!

  • haha thanks.

  • Whoa, great! What tuning is this?

  • I was tuned to open D.. or open E i forget, but the high E was snapped off of my guitar from previous use. so it was similar to playing in open G or A.

  • Ah right. Thanks, man. I really liked your rendition, you really have the feeling of Hurt in your playing.

  • "America Folk" has featured clips of him on BBC lately. Murray Lerner film of Newport Folk Festivals - 1960 to 1963?

    A Legend

  • A Legend indeed. And what a series on the Beeb too

  • I saw a man play this on channel 12, he had long blonde hair and it was just him with an accoustic guitar, does anyone know who that might have been? His version is my favorite by far, but I can't find it.

  • the only man with long blonde hair i can think of right now is Jonny Winter, and i doubt he would have played this song... but you never know.

  • johnny winter did lots of acoustic( national steel) recording - this stuf wasn't promoted the way hiselectric has been - if you can find it he did an album called Before the Storm that is a treasure to hear

  • Well done.

  • Thanks.

  • Good stuff! Keep up the great pickin'!

  • I thought this was a great version. I'm JUST discovering John Hurt and I'm amazed at the complexity of his playing and tuning. I'm intimidated to even try to figure out one of his song. Great work!

  • well, this one's pretty easy once you get it in the right tuning, which i dont think i did.. but.. oh well! lol. his playing is really astonishing sometimes.

  • this is an excellent cover. are "candyman" and his other songs in standard tuning?

  • Not overly sure. im pretty sure he plays Candyman with an A chord. he might have it capo'd somewhere... its been a little while since i've heard that one. Only other one i can think of off hand is Aint Nobody's Buisness, and thats a C chord mostly.

For all I know he plays this one in standard... it'd be helpful if there were more videos of him, but oh well. Just have to combine some guesswork with some fingerpicking and exess time.

  • I have a Skip James LP with this photo on the front. I did wonder whether or not the other guy was JH or not...

  • Thanks jessapur :) I did a search and it seems its spelled Neamiah. I listened to (Skip James sings "Crow Jane") he has a great voice and style. I'll definately be listening to more. Also do you know if there is an original version of pay day (MJH) around because it is one of the best tunes I've heard. Can't stop singin it (Badly) :) Wish there was more video footage of him.

  • well since i couldnt find anywhere to buy it, i found the "Today" album on the internet a while ago, though unfortunatly deleted it by accident. The version i decided to cover was that one, but he plays it on another album aswell, im just not sure which.

if you REALLY cant find it i'll redownload it and send you that song off the album lol.

  • Spelling of Skip James' first name is probably Nehemiah (its ancient Hebrew)...he was apparently named after the prophet who wrote the book of the same name in the Bible.

  • There is a fantastic version of Pay Day on the album "Mississippi John Hurt - D.C. Blues, The Library of Congress Recordings - Vol. 1". I'm sure you can order it from amazon or some such other site. I think I got my copy at a Borders so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one.

And...not a band rendition at all jessupar. Well done.

  • Who is holding the guitar in this photo?

  • Neyamaya "Skip" James. i have no idea how to spell his first name, i've only heard it said. he got the name Skip, or Skippy because he never stayed in one town long back when he was a bootlegger in the 20's and 30's. the photo is from the mid 1960's though.

  • Probabaly Nehemiah (its ancient Hebrew)...he was apparently named after the prophet who wrote the book of the same name in the Bible.

  • Yeah that makes sence... but i think i'll stick to "skip" just to avoid having to try and spell Nehemiah lol.

  • is this a cover or is this you?

sorry if this comment seems stupid..

  • there are no stupid comments, only stupid users. just kidding.

its a song by a man named John Hurt, and its me covering it on an Epiphone acoustic with 5 strings, and 1 annoying tuning head that wont shut up :)

  • Sounds great !

  • Man , if you are doing this with 5 strings I definately am going to subscribe just so I can check in often . No telling when you might get a full set. Keep playing , no way you can go wrong with the great MJH .

  • LOL!! hahaha wow. thats the best comment i've had so far I think. thanks for subbing, and as for the 5 strings, it turned out nicely (aside from the buzzing from my high E tuning head)

It was kinda like Low Bass G tuning, without the lowest note, but kinda diferent.

anyways, thanks for commenting and such. im posting a video as i type this, so feel free to check that one out. it was, however, recorded on 6 strings ;)

  • Ya, man do more Mississip for sure.

  • We'll see lol. I cant sing too well as it is, let alone sing like the legendary John Hurt.

    Cant hurt anyways.

    Thanks for viewing and commenting.
