@GlobalistPotato Because this was a detour over UP tracks, the method of in-cab train control needed a UP engine.

Thanks for this, I was on this train coming from Emeryville. There were 2 Amtrak engines up to denver, then I think they took one off, and put 2 Amtrak ones on and a UP one on sometime around Omaha. I think I saw you with the cameras and decided to come look :) Thanks!!!

3 POS42's STILL cant handle a passenger train, and yet an SD70ACe can handle it and then some. Nice catch!

Thats why two engines pull this train almost everyday. The UP motor is for cab signals only. The ex-CNW is barely used by Amtrak so there is no point in installing the software on P42s. The third Amtrak unit is probably replacing the protect engine in Denver and is offline.

Do research before you bash GEs, Have you ever heard of CAB SIGNALS? The Geneva Subdivision has them and Amtrak doesnt have Cab Signals installed on P42s.... therefore UP adds their own unit to the head end so cab signals can be used.
