  • First of all...the pilot of this helicopter was not rich. He saved for 20 years in order to buy the helicopter. It was not insured so it was a total loss for this man. I understand that he passed away a few years ago. Have some respect.

  • well ive been flying for twenty years the only time i ever got tin this much trouble was when i flew a piper than drove around to the other side of the airport to fly a r22 and that was only my stupidity with my failure to aply rudder when i pulled the collective and that was only for a second i just pulled more pitch to give my self some height and didnt panic as this did

  • He knows how to fly airplanes, obviously, since he was able to get it started. He managed to engage the rotor and get it up to RPM, just figured " How hard can it be?" He was screwed from the second he pulled pitch. I'm a helicopter pilot, you dont figure these out just by trial and error.. you need proper instruction!

  • Yes, it's called a collective, the common term in usage is pull pitch. In addition, I've flown this model,the Hughes/ Schweitzer 300 series, and I can assure you, you do not just turn the key. The clutch switch is on the console, and you light off the motor, THEN engage the clutch until the RPM's drop 100rpm,then repeat until the needles superimpose themselves on the tach. Of course you know this, right? It's all in the POH, section 4, page 14 (bottom of the page, in case you cannot find it).

  • I'm sorry, but you're the idiot. The handle down by your left leg controls pitch. You pull on that (while twisting the throttle to maintain rotor speed) to increase rotor pitch and make the chopper go up. The collective is the stick in the middle which controls the difference in pitch (or angle of attack) between the left and right side and the front and back. You use that to tilt the rotor in the direction you want the bird to go.
