The 458 should pretty well mince the Gallardo. It more powerful and about 200 pounds lighter, its faster to sixty and because its a Ferrari it should handle a bit better. I would still love to see it though, they are such good looking cars.

Well, it just isn't. English Autocar made a straight lane accelerating test and there were both the LP640 and the 599 GTB Fiorano. The Fiorano was faster than the LP640 in acceleration, it only had 2 mph lower top speed. In fact the Fiorano was only beaten by the mighty Bugatti Veyron.

I mostly agree with you. Lamborghini LP640 definately looks better than 599GTB, but it isn't much slower as well. For example it smashed Ferrari by almost 2 seconds going round the Top Gear track. Lamborghini is also equiped with various computer systems.

Think of the McLaren F1 vs. the Bugatti Veyron:) THe F1 has a very thin nose so it knifes through the air- that's one reason why it needs only 627hp to get to 240 while the Veyron needs 1001 to get 10mph more. According to Gordon Murray, the F1 would only need about 740 hp to get to 253mphm and if it had 1001hp, it could get to 281 assuming the same drivetrain efficiency...

Aerodinamics data :

LP 640 Cx=0,35 Sf=2,04 m2 so Sf*Cx= 0,71

599 GTB Cx=0,33 Sf=2,23 m2 so Sf*Cx = 0,73

So due to a thinner front LP640 has a bit lower drag coefficient.

If you refer to figured dry weight (Lp640 have 3670 lbs or 1665 kg) the 599 gtb weight 1580 kg (3483 lbs). It's obvious, LP640 has a tubular steel chassis (steel doors and roof also) plus all wheel drive mechanic. Different magazines tested both cars and measured weight in equal conditions.

Dry weight is a car without any liquid (engine and breaking system oil, engine cooling water, fuel etc etc). Curb or Kerb weight refers to a car 'ready to go' and so with all liquid and some fuel. In my opinion Left lane confuses manufacturer data about dry weight. Test Magazines weight cars in same conditions and with test equipment assembled on the car. You get some difference also because the optionals. Carboceramics brake rotors weight about 12-15 kilos less than conventional ones.

actually running starts and standing still drag races both serve their point. Drag races show tha ability of a car to put the power to the ground of a start and accelerate obviously but can be affected severely by the reaction time of the driver. Running starts in m opinion really show the true power of the car as many cars that post quick 0-100km/h times can often have very average running accelaration times. But both are entertaining
