hmm, i think, that video was about making a fichtail braid, was it? in that case yes, you are supposed to "go under".

No, a fishtail braid uses only two section of hair and not three. It's different. And if you do this basic motion, but go under instead of over it's a "dutch" braid - the braid ends up on top instead of this woven-in look. This video is perfect technique for a classic french braid - good job!
