@jwsphoenix I agree with you. when they heard them speaking in their own language...notice it says "in their ears" so although the people were speaking in tongues, the spirit made it so they that heard it (Jews), heard it in their own language.

I have spoken in tongues, he has no clue what he is talking about. It is the most peaceful experience I have ever had. I was alone, I was speaking to God, I was in prayer, I was worshipping him, and I felt this overwhelming feeling of my faith coming over my body. I began speaking in tongues. I fell to my knees and felt this utter peace over my soul, my body, I was very coherent, I could here my self talking in another language, I was shocked and amazed, I could not stop, I felt his presence.

I come from a similiar background to mr macArthur but you need revelation to move into the experience of what it says. knowing the scriptures is not the same as living in the same reality. mr McArthur is coming from a fixed position of being closed to this gift of the Spirit and only God can change that.

I was demon posessed before i got saved. I spoke in tounges after. Its way different. I do believe this gift is abused and many times faked by prosperity preachers. I became so dependent on it I thought i was lost if i didnt do it on sunday. My relationship with God is deeper now and although i enjoy tounges it rarely occurs and im ok with that because i know His word and dont rely on feelings for my salvation but trust His word now. "Do not forbid to speak with tongues" (1Cor.14:39). I have experienced the same thing as is written in Acts 2 and you want me to deny it? You deny the very thing that the church is in greatest need for today. Jesus said, "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;"(Acts 1:8). You can argue about tongues but no one can argue about the fact that they need POWER in their lives, their families etc. This is the evidence of the Holy Spirit.....Power.
Doesn't this presuppose that God couldn't validate the message without signs, that sounds ridiculous. There is a difference between Paul and John on tongues....Paul opens the book with a salutation to the Church at Corinth...he addresses them as a church......and he says Grace and Peace to them. John (MacArthur) calls them pagans. John does nothing but faultfinding.....John says that the tongues are part of an erotic cult that involves sexual promiscuity. John says they are praying to a false God.Paul says the tongues are real and they are praying to God. Why the tension between Paul and John?
MacArthur speaks of a lot of other religions and how they experience altered states of consiousness. Of course there are....there are many kinds of altered states of consiousness.....sleep, halucinations, hypnosis, ecstasy..and so on. But here the Bible is talking of a spritual gift from God. Paul does not say the Corinthians had a demonic gift.....he said that those that pray in tongues pray to God, not to man. That he wishes they all prayed in tongues.
@prairiemark Paul wishes them to continue speaking in tongues....and he sets down guidelines for his anticipated continued excersice of the gift.......no more than one or two at a time...decently and in order....and must have an interpreter...... Paul did not oppose tongues, but MacArthur does. Why is that?

What I was pointing out is the obvious difference between how Paul told them to behave and what MacArthur says....MacArthur claims they were praying to a false God...Paul says when they prayed in tongues they were praying to God. MacArthur says tongues was part of a pagan cult. Paul said it was part of Christianity and laid down guidelines for them to use in the future exercise of it.

Paul's saying that if a person speaks in an unknown tongue, which is an earthly language according to Acts 2 and not gibberish, it's doing no good and it's as if God is the only one there to hear. Tongues are an evangelistic tool. Are you charismatics trying to evangelize God. You people have a complete misreading and understanding of the Bible and what tongues is. As I said earlier, Acts 2 explains what tongues is--earthly languages people speak.

All the major translations done by large teams of linguistic experts agree the words mean God.....not "false God" as MacARthur falsely says.
@prairiemark The tongues in Acts 2 are completely different than in I Cor. In acts they were speaking to men. In I Cor they were speaking to God. In Acts no interpreter was needed because everyone heard the speaker in their own language.

Tongues properly translated in greek is Language. It is not jibberish or babbling in a fashion which nobody understands. It is a gift of language that glorifys God. It has to be understandable or it is a useless gift. Pretty simple to understand.

Actually in the book of Enoc he was told that the clouds are the first Heaven. @ladyingold777 You forget why 1 Corinthians was written, to rebuke the Corinth church. They were all seeking tongues, and nothing to edify the church. Prophecy was a gift which edified the church. If you put that verse up, then you must also include this verse
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.

In matthew 11 :3, i mean erred not in a magnified way but his unbelief of Christ(and that was understandable, he was rotting in Herod's jail) but then I am not making it a big issue, since I know i can never walk in the shoes of a great saint like John, the Baptist but the point being that we are human and even John after believing for such a long time, doubts came to his head as to whether Christ was the One or another was to come.

1Co 14:5 I wish that all of you could speak in other languages, but especially that you could speak what God has revealed. The person who speaks what God has revealed is more important than the person who speaks in other languages. This is true unless he can interpret what he says to help the church grow.

1. Buddhism does NOT recognise the existence of Jesus Christ at all!, and furthermore Buddhism is hundreds of years OLDER than Christianity (About 500). I know this because I have studied Buddhism.

I have a great respect for Dr John MacArthur but I find myself unable to agree with this teaching. Its a bit too one-sided. The video being shown is dealing with another issue which could be titled "excess in the church and why the church should have cameras in worship".

I have spoken in tongues, he has no clue what he is talking about. It is the most peaceful experience I have ever had. I was alone, I was speaking to God, I was in prayer, I was worshipping him, and I felt this overwhelming feeling of my faith coming over my body. I began speaking in tongues. I was demon posessed before i got saved. I spoke in tounges after. Its way different. I do believe this gift is abused and many times faked by prosperity preachers. I became so dependent on it I thought i was lost if i didnt do it on sunday. My relationship with God is deeper now and although i enjoy tounges it rarely occurs and im ok with that because i know His word and dont rely on feelings for my salvation but trust His word now. MacArthur speaks of a lot of other religions and how they experience altered states of consiousness. Of course there are....there are many kinds of altered states of consiousness.....sleep, halucinations, hypnosis, ecstasy..and so on. But here the Bible is talking of a spritual gift from God. Paul does not say the Corinthians had a demonic gift.....he said that those that pray in tongues pray to God, not to man. That he wishes they all prayed in tongues.

What I was pointing out is the obvious difference between how Paul told them to behave and what MacArthur says....MacArthur claims they were praying to a false God...Paul says when they prayed in tongues they were praying to God. Paul's saying that if a person speaks in an unknown tongue, which is an earthly language according to Acts 2 and not gibberish, it's doing no good and it's as if God is the only one there to hear. Actually in the book of Enoc he was told that the clouds are the first Heaven. What dells in those churches and people is not the Holy Ghost. @ladyingold777 You forget why 1 Corinthians was written, to rebuke the Corinth church. They were all seeking tongues, and nothing to edify the church. Prophecy was a gift which edified the church. If you put that verse up, then you must also include this verse
27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.

You are so wrong brother, read the book just published, "The death of a legacy of error" a prophetic word of correction to the church where it destroys the doctrine of the initial evidence, and gives clear teaching on the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and the gift of tongues in the body of Christ. Remember even John the Baptist even erred corcening Christ, so it is no shock if a fellow mere human is also in error. His arguments are one sided and simply not biblical. Satan fights so hard agains this because it is the gift of praying in the Spirit, or praying in tongues that truly exposes his wiles and all of his tricks he plays on you. The amount of wisdom you receive from God is astounding and He reveals truths to you that you KNOW you never knew on your own! Some preachers don't even have it, so they preach falsely against it. Notice how he talks about all of the sins and goofed up sins in the people that spoke in "false" satanic tongues! Satan always has a counterfeit of the true thing that God does. But, the gift of speaking in tongues is real and it is powerful, so powerful that when the Holy Spirit-Who knows everything prays through you, your prayers are answered 100%. The person who prophesies is greater than the person who speaks in tongues, unless someone gives an interpretation, so that the congregation can be edified. I agree with Dr John MacArthur that Pentecostal leaders should put order in churches regarding the manifestation of the Spirit like Paul did in Corinthians 14.
But he better be careful speaking about this especially if he does not know what he is talking about because he haven't experienced speaking in tongues by himself.
The Spirit cleanses, and everything that the bible says about the Spirit is true.

1. Buddhism does NOT recognise the existence of Jesus Christ at all!, and furthermore Buddhism is hundreds of years OLDER than Christianity (About 500). I know this because I have studied Buddhism.
2. Christianity and Judaism stem from the same time and place in history, and share many common religious beliefs, THAT is why you both acknowledge Jesus Christ's existence.

I think Mr. MacArthur reads a little too much between the lines. Where in Corinthians does Paul say or accuse the Corinthians of practicing a "satanic counterfeit tongues"?
MacArthur is a cessationist....and a pretty bad one, based on his exigesis.
