He made 3-4 really low passes and on the last one, after passing mid-ships, he dipped his wing to turn, but it caught the ocean and he cart wheeled into it. We hauled ass to the wreck site to see if there were any survivors, but only saw debris and bodies. The ship launched rescue boats and they picked up one barely alive crewman, who died shortly thereafter.
HOW the hell did the Soviets get hold of this video. *I* was flying the 'plane guard' SH-3A that morning. We had just launched and were flying a track outbound behind Essex, when we saw this Badger inbound. He was flying SO low, that his engines were blowing up 'rooster tails' behind the jet. WE were the 1st ones to alert the boat that they had 'incoming', as the Badger was too low for radar coverage.
it wasn't just the tu-16 - a LOT of russian military equipment were deathtraps. they were only designed to last long enough to be destroyed in combat, hence no need to pay particular attention to crew safety.
it was an unfortunate symptom of soviet society that valued the state over the individual - they were only too happy to kill millions of their own people to buoy up an increasingly paranoid and self-serving government.

I was stationed aboard the USS Essex (CVS-9) when this occurred on May 25, 1968 at 65-03N 01-22E at 1152. I can assure you there were no shots fired. This aircraft had made repeated low passes on us and other ships in the task group. After the crash we sent helos in an attempt to rescue anyone who may have survived - no one did. A couple of days after the crash we sent a small boat with remains to a USSR destroyer who shadowed our group. They fired shots over the crash site. A sad day...

The a400 is complete failure under development since 1989 and it still has not flown countries are pulling out of A400 contract and buying the best transport aircraft C130 and C17, And C17 has had no issues like white elephant a400.
Its been a concept since 1989 NOT a development there is a very BIG difference it has only been in real development for a little over 11yrs which is average for a Military aircraft.
I am not a fan of the A400M but I am to the C17 but the C17 did have huge issues and its development dates back to 1973-4 YC-15 so its development time goes a long way than the A400M will.
And remember the A400M is not a C17 substitute it is an alternative and C130 has had its day once the A400M comes into play.
The C17 first flew within 10 years 1981 to 91 a400 is losing customers almost every month. Chile hasd dropped out Canada dropped out and decided to but the better C17 and C130J Great Britain will soon drop out and buy more C17 and maybe C130j. Soon the A400 will be cancelled
if they ever get the a400 into the air, it will probably suffer from the same autopilot disconnect problems & avionics malfunctions that have sent several airbuses diving into the ground.

They just stress out in the vid that this footage was never shown before in the USSR or Russia. It was one of many tragic accidents that happened during the Cold War and whitnessed by the "other side".

I was stationed aboard the USS Essex (CVS-9) when this occurred on May 25, 1968 at 65-03N 01-22E at 1152. I can assure you there were no shots fired. This aircraft had made repeated low passes on us and other ships in the task group. After the crash we sent helos in an attempt to rescue anyone who may have survived - no one did. A couple of days after the crash we sent a small boat with remains to a USSR destroyer who shadowed our group. They fired shots over the crash site. A sad day...

Hi Chief, I recall an odd helicopter crash during that time period, without any debris.
No sign of the crew, nothing on the surface. The Essex stayed in the area
for days, finally coming to a dead stop..
I have never been able to find any info about that crash. Can you help me out with the date and location? Or any details at all.

Taking in to account that the reporter is a Russian, I'd reason that could be possible the plane came down on its own, and the footage taken from the ship was provably sent to the Kremlin to show they didn't have to do anything with the incident and the air plane was fling low to take pics of the ship to see what its ballistic capability was.the jet took water and came down, the Russians consider the Baltic like their backyard and the US ship could've parish.

The a400 is complete failure under development since 1989 and it still has not flown countries are pulling out of A400 contract and buying the best transport aircraft C130 and C17, And C17 has had no issues like white elephant a400.

Its been a concept since 1989 NOT a development there is a very BIG difference it has only been in real development for a little over 11yrs which is average for a Military aircraft.
I am not a fan of the A400M but I am to the C17 but the C17 did have huge issues and its development dates back to 1973-4 YC-15 so its development time goes a long way than the A400M will.
And remember the A400M is not a C17 substitute it is an alternative and C130 has had its day once the A400M comes into play.

The C17 first flew within 10 years 1981 to 91 a400 is losing customers almost every month. Chile hasd dropped out Canada dropped out and decided to but the better C17 and C130J Great Britain will soon drop out and buy more C17 and maybe C130j. Soon the A400 will be cancelled

it must be a piece of crap, it's a copy of the C-130. if you screw up your copy of a long serving aircraft, it must be crap. as for the 787 it is a entirely new design. Boeing, unlike Airbus doesn't fly aircraft before they are ready, you'll notice Boeing doesn't have aircraft falling out of the sky everytime they launch a new model. it's because they take care to build a quality product.
