Thanks alot for posting a beautiful video. He will always be a great hero along with Zabo, Eifferman, Clarance Ross, Tanny, Don Howorth, Jack Lallane. To me he will always be number one! The best
This is the best Steve Reeves video i've seen. Ive been a fan for a good while and i actually saw some pics ive never seen before. As for Reeves being on juice, I talk closely to one individual that was around in those times and says that in Steves younger days he wasnt on them for sure. question is did he use them in his later years like in his thirties and forties ect. I truly dont believe he took them since he looked always the same. Not even this guy is sure and hes defineltly reliable
@Heddernheim069 Since when is a 6'1" 215 lb man, (who was never shredded the way modern bodybuilders are), suspected of being on steroids? The accusation itself is a joke: 5'9" Jay Cutler walks around off-season at a still-lean 310! Virtually any 6'1" mesomorph in his late teens or twenties can weight-train himself to a lean 215 without drugs. Reeves' proportions just happened to look great at that weight , a quality drugs don't affect.
steve no uso esteroides ya q los q se conocian en ese tiempo eran para ganar volumen y si lo ves no tiene tanto dejen la envidia el señor fue el mejor pese a quien le pese
Some people, very few naturally gifted individuals have the genetic makeup to build a lot of muscle. Put in another way some people are born to be bodybuilders. they can build champion physiques naturally. Steve Reeves was such a guy, plus he had an incredible bone-structure that made his muscles attach and look majestic. the problem today is that any idiot can take steroids and build muscle. bodybuilding is NOT for everybody, but only for a select few with the proper genetics!
As a boy i watched steve in his "Hercules" movie role and inspired me at an early age to dedicated weight training which i did for many years. His symmetry, proportions were second to none. Not overly bulky, just perfection in the sport. None better. RIP Steve.
Steve, though shorter and more lightly built than Ferrigno, made a superior Hercules. Lou ruined it whenever he spoke. I once knew a woman who made other women look like goats, but when she spoke, well, you'd have to hear it to believe it---a total turn off. Sorry, Lou.
I've held off & waited for more on the "cekoa" script, but it's almost 3 yrs now & no new apparent info. The Reeves interviews I've read portrayed a intelligent, poised, self-confident gentleman, very much in keeping w/his physical appearance & not seemingly lacking in any social skill to stop him from raising a family, or leading to tragedy. Your short intro here is the only piece I've ever seen indicating such a problem. Please, its time to elaborate.
Steve Reeves was the GREATEST of all bodybuilders. Age 16 , in 1943 , he was already great ; the pics prove it . Ed Yarick never charged him to work-out in his gym but we are to believe he had money for ROIDS ? Roids were NOT available in 1947 , when he won the MR. America or 1950 , when he won the MR. Universe . The first ROID in the US, DIANABOL , went to the YORK Barbell Co. olympic lifters and John Grimek , who had retired from compition by then . Steve said his looks were " HEREDITARY " !
I'm not sure where you got your information about Steve and steroids, I have never been led to believe from any source that Steve took steroids and he was the biggest proponent of natural bodybuilding. Do you remember Steve's open letter to Arnold published in Muscle and Fitness calling for Arnold to get off steroids and become a better example to all up and coming bodybuilders? I don't think you have to defend Steve to anyone.
My comment was in response to alexisbrooke08 : that STEVE took steroids. What information are you not sure about ? You defended STEVE in response to her comment ; so why shouldn't I ? STEVE said he never took steroids and that's good enough for me. She repeats the same old story that someone in Europe said STEVE told him he took steroids. Yet no one in the US ever claimed this. She didn't burst my bubble as she claims ; I burst hers !!! She provided no facts because there are none
@cekoa what ive always wanted to know having an intrest in bodybuilding is what sort of diet did steve reeves eat.Presumably back then meat wasnt as easy to get in the quantities it is today and supplements wernt around, so how did he do it?
Good luck on your script. I met Mr Reeves briefly once, in the early 1980's in one of the once-popular Nautilus health clubs in San Diego. He was still fit, though as I recall troubled just a little by an old shoulder injury suffered in one of his films. It's sad to hear that his latter days bore sadness; hopefully he is content wherever he may be now.
A quick question...proportion...especially between calves, biceps/triceps and neck being the proportions are equal...I believe the measurements were cold...BUT was that flexed or unflexed?
Can't prove it, but as a rule, BBers, (as opposed to boxers, for instance, who have their arm measured hanging relaxed), measure flexed. In posed shots , SR's neck looks graceful & relatively slim by BBer standards, but if you check casual street-shots of him in a collared shirt, it's huge: It'd take a flexed arm to equal it. (The neck & calves in normal standing posture are already partially flexed, so I assume the question is only about he arms.)
Well, for me really, but he sure gives a guy some darn good reasons why.
It seems to me that for Steve Reeves, it was not to persue mindless, garantuan size but to expand in proportional perfection. and to think the whole reason he slimmed down for his movies was so he wouldn't dwarf the egos of his fellow actors. He really inspires the imagination!
I think if Steve Reeves never went to that small hospital,he would still have lived much longer,He walked in, they did some tests, and died?He was not taken there by ambulance, he walked in.I find it strange he died after the tests were done.
Read what they say on his home page. How he went in walking and died soon after afterwards. He was a great inspiration to me and a whole lot of my sixties generation.
Reeves was a great inspiration!~ I remember when the first issue of MuscleMag International came out: Steve graced the cover. The Canadian Publisher at the time, Robert Kennedy was a great admirer of Reeves. As for steroids, I highly doubt it..................
alexisbrooke08, unless you were there, you cannot make the statement that Steve Reeves took steroids. If operating on second or third hand information, you have to consider the source..do you remember all the hubbub when it was made public that Arnold had lied in his book about missing his father's funeral because he was so dedicated to his training for his upcoming contest? I ask you, can you trust your information?
hey alexis, why dont you learn your facts reeves himself discusses this in his book. someone misquotes him. the article says that arnold learned about steroids from reeves in france in the 1960's and reeves wasn't even in france in the 1960s. they got reeves mixed up with some one else. reeves NEVER took steroids. his physique is not a roid physique.
not to bust some peoples bubbles....but arnolds long time trainer and doctor since his young age at 15...wrote a book..quoting arnold saying something like...when arnold was young, in the early 60's(arnold was 15 or 16) i introduced him to steroids(dianobol and test the only used steroids at the time) everyone took them...he learned about steroids from one of his heros steve reeves.. im not saying you cant achieve this physique without them...but steve reeves did infact take anabolic steroids

@a:BS. Worse, not repeated accurately. "Arnold: An Unauthorized Biography" by W.Leigh: K.Mamul, (Arnold's 1st trainer, -not- doctor ), claimed that he, Mamul, met Reeves in France in '52, & Reeves taught him about steroids. IMPOSSIBLE: Reeves was in France in '48&'60,not'52, & denies ever hearing of Mamul until this accusation. Mamul's either lying or confused. Reeves set a standard for clean-cut, honest living. Mamul gave teen-Arnold drugs & now tries tries to defend his actions.Get real.
can someone please tell me if steve reeves wrote a book about how to build a body like his i want to get into bodybuilding and i think he is a right person to learn from unlike all the liars and steroid users today .... so if someo0ne can please tell me if he wrote a book or if he wrote many if u cud give me the names coz i want to get all the information i can about this man bcoz i want to learn from him and if he made any videos of his training or teaching i would appretiate peoples help
Tell me more! In spite of his fame, (then and now), Steve Reeves remains very much a mystery. Please elaborate on Reeves and your relationship with him.
Excellent tribute, great choice of music. Truly fitting for such a great man. I'm glad Steve had such a loyal friend at the end, his legacy is in good hands. Good luck with the script cekoa, and thank you.
A biopic on Steve Reeves would be a fascinating project...something I'd be interested in seeing. Great historical as well as personal drama about a subject never really covered in film before. From what I know of Mr. Reeves, he was a very innovative and eloquent man, able to communicate without being arrogant or condescending, and he had more right than most to be! I think a film of his life could be inspiring. But why did the American film industry discount him? A great tribute.
I love The "Hercules" films. Steve was perfect as the Greek Hero. The voice overs done on the two films were good. Who was Hercules', I recognize Alexander Courage's voice, but no one else. I'd reallly like to know? Thanks.
Truly one of the most beautiful men, I have ever seen. Grew up in awe of Steeve Reeves, and he motivated me into body building. He is dead now. Just shows you, no matter what you do in life or how beautiful you are, are life's are all in vain, just like the Bible says. Live for Jehovah and his word, which is eternal.
@fritzvongarrett your statement is so true, we all should live for Jehovah and his word, which is eternal forever, thank you my friend. We must focus more to Jehovah God Almighty, that created Steve (Stephen) Reeves and all of us. love you all.
I was a big fan of Steve Reeves growing up as a kid--I must've seen all of those movies he was in. He certainly WAS the personification of what a gladiator was. How old was Steve when he died, and how did it happen?
(Part 1) He was 74 and a few months 1/21/1926 - 5/1/2000 per Wikipedia. What I read at the time indicated he died of lymphoma, diagnosed less than 2 months before he died...Not long before that, there had been buzz about him coming out of retirement to make an appearance on the Kevin Sorbo "Hercules" series. I first heard about it in some fitness mag - MK2000 I believe - where they made it sound like it was a done deal, but it never happened.
(Part 2) After SR died, I e-mailed SR's business partner about it. He indicated that after approaching him & sending a script the producers never followed through. Something to the effect that noone would remember who Steve was. Can you believe that? THE archetype of the movie Hercules. Apparently Sorbo was really looking forward to it since as with many, Steve had been a big inspiration. Obviously a really weird business. Ask him to appear, send them a script and then not follow through.
There's a lengthy interview with Steve in a M&F from I believe '83. I don't normally think much of the Weider publications but once in a while they have something good. Somewhat ironic that a mag that extols the 'roided up image of bodybuilding featured Reeves who was adamantly anti-roids. From what I gather, that's the reason he didn't involve himself with the bodybuilding world much, he didn't like how it had evolved.
Thanks Docsavage20 for all your great information, I have only one thing to add: Steve's diagnosis was only 48 hours before he died. Part of the script I am writing is about the HMO nightmare that didn't diagnose the illness sooner. That's all I can say for now due to confidentiality to the story, but it will be awesome and everyone will know who Steve Reeves is, because we will tell his story from his very human and vulnerable state!!
That picture is not retouched or 'a fake' just a 29 inch waist and excellent control of the abs and perinial layer for a phenominal 'stomach vacume'. Have a great DAY!
It is an honor to post this kind tribute to a very great man. Have you written a book on his life or has anyone? I appreciate your closeness with him, who would accurately pen his life story and hope your script and movie deal works out. Many will be anxious to see his life portrayed on film.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. reeves at an autograph show a few years back. He was very gracious and even let me buy him lunch at the hotel cafeteria . I will never forget that meeting. He was my boyhood idol and for that brief time I was 14 yrs old again..........He died a few months later. There will never be another.................
Reeves was gifted genetically and i am glad he was raised in an era without steroids, He was medically healthy and he looked outstanding, being the role model for many to come. He was the best!
The mindset of body building hasn't really changed over the years. It has always been size with aesthetics (proportionality and shape). Unfortunately steroids have made size more important. So in order to compete everyone needs roids. Shame!
I am touched by this tribute video and I thank all who participate this HOLY work. Please keep me informed on Everything which will be made to commemorate the most fascinating MAN of all
What a fantastic presentation! Jesus, Reeves had zero flaws! Considering it was 1949 when he won Mr World, check out how ripped he was!! (photo of Steve Reeves shaking hands with an older suited gentleman...a judge?) And while he's never been given the reputation, we all gotta admit that the dude was STRONG!! ("I'm as strong as I want to be" said Reeves)
I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to make an outstanding tribute of this great man, who was not only physically hansome through his hard work, but was also a great human being. I hope you will continue this and make a documentary prposal to CBS or BBC, they will probably be interested.
Thank you for your appreciaiton of this work and my friend, Steve. I hadn't thought of the BBC, thanks for the info. Stay tuned and we'll see where it goes.
This is the way I want this website to work, appreciation only. Whoever wishes to act in an unappreciative manner will have their posts removed and if they do it again, they will be blocked or listed as spam. This is the way I intended this website to be, in honor of my friend Steve, who's ashes I personaly carried back to Montana, peformed the ceremony with his relatives and closest friends who could travel to Montana, and spread them to the winds of the land in which he was born.
I am happy to see that you are still inspired and especially that you are in the best shape of your life! Congratulations and I'm sure Steve is honored, by all that you are.
Thanks for that, there were some photos in there i had never seen before. You can see in those pictures of him at age 15/16 that he already had a great frame and shape.
Wow, this man spent all his life exercising. This is very pure and honest body work, without any chemical. Yes, you are right; Steve, Mohammad, and Elvis were the 3 kings.
Thankyou for your kind words, please everyone, keep them coming and if anyone has any useful information that may help me write the script of his life, feel free to contact me. Thanks Again, it is a pleasure to hear from all of you, all over the world.
dear Ceoka, Several years ago a 'jellow' mag in italy interviwed a woman who claimed to be STEVE's illigal gaughter. She said she was born to one of the actresses who costraed STEVE when he was in ROME . Is is true ??
Thank you so much for these great photos of a great man. I've read Chris LeClair's biography of Steve, as well as Reeve's own book of natural physique building, and it seems that Steve was an incredibly intelligent and beautiful human being - not only a superb bodybuilder and very handsome man. While his films (I have all of them) are all we have left of him, and they show off his great physique, they do not do the man justice. Thanks again for this wonderful tribute!
I am Sorry for your loss. I remember watching as Hercules and seeing his pictures in the magazines thinking he so beautiful. More than handsome BEAUTIFUL. Him and Muhammad Ali are to me beautiful men I've ever seen. I can't wait to learn more about him why he never made it big in Hollywood? Today Reeves would be GOD! And make Brad Pitt seem plain. As he should. Pitt as Achilles was great but Hercules was the GREATEST! And he made him real for me. I love Steve Reeves.
Thank you for your condolences and loving appreciation of my friend. He lives on in all of us who remember him. The script I am writing will be a wonderful movie for everyone who knew him and everyone who didn't as well! In Appreciaiton and Sincerity, I am
The music is from the 'Atlantis' (Disney Animation) and is the track called, 'The Chamber'. Someday I thought I would use this music for a great bodybuilding posing routine!
Thank you, so much. :) Just a note concerning modern bodybuilding: Why all the steroids now? My point is, if all of the "athletes" are taking steroids at the pro level today, then the playing field is even, just as it would be if they were all OFF of them. There are no more heroes today, just freaks. Mr. Reeves was one of the greats!
@cekoa wow and heartbreaking. thanks for sharing.

What I read at the time indicated he died of lymphoma, diagnosed less than 2 months before he died...Not long before that, there had been buzz about him coming out of retirement to make an appearance on the Kevin Sorbo "Hercules" series. I first heard about it in some fitness mag - MK2000 I believe - where they made it sound like it was a done deal, but it never happened.
docsavage20 4 years ago

From what I gather, that's the reason he didn't involve himself with the bodybuilding world much, he didn't like how it had evolved.
docsavage20 4 years ago
Thanks Docsavage20 for all your great information, I have only one thing to add: Steve's diagnosis was only 48 hours before he died. Part of the script I am writing is about the HMO nightmare that didn't diagnose the illness sooner. That's all I can say for now due to confidentiality to the story, but it will be awesome and everyone will know who Steve Reeves is, because we will tell his story from his very human and vulnerable state!!

My heart stopped when I came across a small article in a muscle mag that Reeves had died.

The pic at 1:27 is creepy^^..but awesome ; even looks like a fake, was his waist reduced on the pic?
sermerder 4 years ago
That picture is not retouched or 'a fake' just a 29 inch waist and excellent control of the abs and perinial layer for a phenominal 'stomach vacume'. Have a great DAY!
cekoa 4 years ago
Old school bodybuilders had much smaller waists and really practiced a lot of muscle control exercises......

He was the best!
reefhuss 4 years ago
forget the genetically gifted crap the man trained hard
themetalgod21 4 years ago

A true legend. Thank you for the excellent presentation.

The music is from the 'Atlantis' (Disney Animation) and is the track called, 'The Chamber'. Someday I thought I would use this music for a great bodybuilding posing routine!
cekoa 4 years ago
Thank you, so much. :) Just a note concerning modern bodybuilding: Why all the steroids now? My point is, if all of the "athletes" are taking steroids at the pro level today, then the playing field is even, just as it would be if they were all OFF of them. There are no more heroes today, just freaks. Mr. Reeves was one of the greats!
