I thought the longest active runway is at Edwards Air Force Base or where the space shuttle lands in Florida. The shuttle runway is 3 miles long.

ACTUALLY...the longest "runway" is at the infamous area 51 AKA Groom Lake...although not totally paved, the length is around 38000ft...Over double the longest paved runway...

It is called the tiller, and is used to steer the aircraft.

It can also be steered by pedals but its mostly for fine steering like during takeoff, I believe rudder fine steering is limited to 7 or 9 Degree's.

The tiller is steer the nose gear, the rudder pedals are to control the rudder takeoffs and in air flight. the tiller is used for ground steering.

I read Wiki's page about the 787 and said the 787-9 won't enter service till 2013. It could be that what you saw wasn't updated.
