love the end of this song, wen u can hear bono`s vocals. brillant song writing by bono and u2.. and 2 get johnny cash 2 sing it makes it even better..
I remember hearing this for the 1st time in 1994 and it floored me, it still does today. They may not be Johnny's words, but I believe they matched his soul at the time. I like his version of Hurt, but this sounds like a song written for only for Johnny.
@squeekyp10 Me too. I was really young at the time and kind of knew who Johnny Cash was, but still connected with me. I don't know why. Now that I'm older, this song resonates even deeper.
So many great metaphores in this song..I like to write poetry my self..Johnny you are immortalized by your words and music forever...You are a legend who can never die..I will never forget you..When i hear you sing i think of my grandpa,,thanks Mr.Cash for that..Peaceout and godspeed
@mrfitness2008 Wheres we do not stomach Lady Gahgah exactly because she is not original (at all), we like Johnny Cash because he was both original and a great performer. Covering other people's songs could be just a sign of appreciation.

If this song hadn't happened, there's a chance that Johnny's whole collaboration with Rick Rubin wouldn't have happened. Johnny had one of the greatest late-periods of any artist in history, musical or otherwise.
listen to Mr Cash and think ,,cannot I redeem myself ,,better believe it my friend,, I did,,,can you not,,,,,,,,,,,,,,eh in my own way,, thank you Mr Cash,,,
too much footage from "Hurt", i wrote an outline for this song that would be 10x better, an emotional powerhouse, as i'm a bit of a wanderer myself but i don't have the money to get it produced.
This song reminds me of Fallout 3 so much. Its like Johnny had a Time machine, went into the future, and wrote a song about it. Great game and an even grater song.
Oh is that what it's about? I've been alone too long to think that anyone else will "save" me, and you can stuff the oblique reference to belief in imaginary religious symbolism that condemns you and anyone else adhering to it to living a life of submission and slavery...I've been wandering this planet for fifty years and let me tell you, you truly go with nothing.
Life is a journey, sometimes we get caught up in meaninless B.S. and it holds us down. I just want to go out and wander, "with a Bible and a gun, the Word of God laid heavy on my heart, I was sure I was the one."
I realise we all have different tastes, and we are all entitled to our own opinion, but how can 25 people not like this, it's Johnny Cash, for heavens sake.

I just had a Johnny cash session, courtesy you tube, thank the great Lord for Johnny and You tube. Well, I Know there was a Johnny , I give the other guy benefit of the question? Maxthevid
@plkunger i feel ya, since i learned of Johnny, i only ware black and am trying to deliver his messages as well as right as many of the wrongs as i can, he did as much as one person can, and now it's up to us to continue his fight aganst the ones who would do nothing but what can be done for personal gain, or for the torment of others. Together, we can change the world as Cash did, and is.
@connah07 It was uploaded before youtube greatly improved their quality settings - and until they allow a user to replace a particular video with one of a higher quality then I have no choice but to leave it as it is. But I still wouldn't say it's 'awful'.
Becasue there aren't that many people around with a brain to understand quality, who "get" the good stuff or who have decent taste. Young people can't help not having experience or exposure to good music with poignant lyrics, but maybe more should go "Wandering" in search of what's out there.
You know the word association tests where you are asked to give a one word response to a person, place or thing. When somebody says Johnny Cash my response is HONESTY.
Awesome video. This has been one of my favorite U2 songs for a long time (lead me to Cash at a younger age). I think your literal visual representations in are appropriate even for the more metaphorical passages of the song. Exceptional job in choosing stills and clips, and rendering them together.
man alive .... just beyond words .. the simplicity of the music and the complexity of the lyrics .... and Johnny's voice pulls the two together in a cohesive masterpiece. Peace in heaven Johnny & June!

Nice Video of one of my Fav. song from the U2's Zooropa. I loved to play the song till the last second: "At the end of the song (on most versions of Zooropa), there is a minute of complete silence. Following this, an alarm-sound fades in (at 5:14). The alarm sound repeats, even once it has completely started (at about 5:20). The alarm sound finishes at 5:38. The remaining three seconds are silent. Apparently, this is the same sound some DJs hear after 20 seconds of dead air" from Wikipedia

This video is totally awesome and revealing. About one man's journey and the pit falls that can become obstacle. The obstacles can become a vice and then a habit. He obviously found redemption, love and acceptance in June Carter and the Lord, Jesus Christ. Johnny Cash is one hell of a man!

Tremendous feel to this. Say what you want about U2, but they do write a great tune and this one suited JC to a T. I actually liked Bono's ending with the country feel and soul at the end. I played along on my acoustic and you can sense the drive in this great song. Inspiring.
@soulkiss1001 I see your point, but in the video it's a gesture by the great man and, as well as being an important piece of Cash iconography, it's a million miles from a foul language-laden insulting post.
@u2mixer couldn't agree more, cash's life is a display of everything a person can do wrong, but , the other side of that coin, you'll ever have a chance to redeem yourself. cash, thanks god, had that angel on his shoulder, June, who saved him from being just another poor man lost in drug addiction and ruin. ppl should think about, so many talents lost for drugs, and we''ll never know how many beautiful songs or whatever talent they got, world could've known.
Great song- awesome video- but I wish the song could slightly remixed with the vocals pulled forward and the synthisizer sofened a bit- the constant thump-beat was distracting and gave me a headache trying to enjoy the vocals.- Just my 2 cents.
@dogbeith1 yes i know dog . he wrote 1 for Roy Orbison aswell "mystery girl" excellent songwriter.
but i dont like bono, he should have just let Cash sing it. He's letting us know he wrote it by contributing at the last part of the song . It's like saying "Yoohoo its meee i wrote that" dont forget meee.
great collaboration between Johnny Cash & U2. This is such a beautiful song. Johnny Cash reaches beyond the limitations of country music. He's one of the greatest artists ever! Thanks for making & posting this video. It's very lovely. Well Done!
EVERY time,i almost cry, when i listen to this song. Johnny Cash is the perfect exemple of a simple little thing that we call Human Being. Every inch of that man was feeling, pure feeling.
@ultimateguitar553 They did that collaboration to raise money for New Orleans, you should really look into stuff before you putt something on the web.
@MrSHONthaDON agreed great track, but I think it's very much set in it's own time i.e. the cold war, it seems to me to a crtique of communism and communists in the USA, mainly their aiethism inherent in their ideology. mostly evident in the begining. "streets paved with gold, lifted some stones... without a soul." "citizens outside the church house. Kingdom without god in it" "under an atomic sky" (paraphrasing) Seems to be in a post-nuclear USA where commies took over.
The tears when I said goodbye... to whom. Johnny hurt many beyond repair. I struggle with JC. He is conflicted and was the day he died. He never found peace, because his victims never found it either.
Where are men like this. A man that was been addicted and admitted it. A man who doesn't piont fingers, takes his the blame, and tries to make wrong things right. Instead we have barry bonds, roger clemens. You are missed Johnny Cash

dogbeith1 11 months ago

I'm in disblief that U2 would later collaborate with Green Day.

@ultimateguitar553 They did that collaboration to raise money for New Orleans, you should really look into stuff before you putt something on the web.
But whatever.
Amazing song!!!!

Not very many fans or critics were happy with this album; I however loved and believe it's fault lied in being ahead of it's time.
It's also nice to see so many people having such positive raw emotion for this closing track.
