Garret Evans is an idiot. College age adults are not mature enough to carry guns? Hello Garret Evans (and the like), have you ever heard of the US Military? This issue involves 21 year old legal carriers (meaning that they have a lisence). Military members are 18, 19, and 20 and armed. Hey Garret, cops deal with stress too (much more so than professors) should we take away their guns too?
I actually appreciate this debate and believe that the interviewer was fair. Garrett Evans does, though, make a brilliant point. He was, at the time of this debate, a recently recovered victim. Even he admits this. Most of his arguments seem to be affected by the emotions surrounding his experience (and, in fairness, who can blame him?). Had he, perhaps, been saved from injury by a legally authorized, trained, conceal and carry holder, would his point of view be different?
@idbs1984 Who said I would CCW my hipoint? Who said it would be my first choice for self defense? Not Me...
I bought it because it was affordable, accurate and (in my experience) decently reliable. On top of that I don't see how what guns I own or don't own is relevant to either of our points of view. The bottom line is that taking away guns will only disarm good people. Which was exactly why Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot all used gun control to disarm individuals in preparation of genocide.
@idbs1984 So far mine has had one reliability issue, and it was magazine related. After adjustment I have not had an issue since. Not sure put you off so much, but I am very confident in mine.
@idRATHERbeOUTDOORS I'm going to come to your defense here. I have a HiPoint firearm in my drawer. It is, for me, a pretty good "drawer gun" in that I can leave it in there and bang it up and still pull it out and use it if need arises. My CCW gun is something else entirely. Better to have a HiPoint than a pointy stick or a wiffle bat.
@cjcassidy91 he's not some fucktard gun faggot stroking off to his handgun under his pillow. i believe everybody should have the constitutional right to carry a gun ..but definitely not on campus. it should be in defense of your home. too many emotional faggots are running loose and putting guns in their hands outside of their home is not a bright idea.
5:20 That's retarded because you can't carry in UT, but a man walked into the library with an AK a little while ago. Criminals will bring the biggest thing they've got, it doesn't matter what the victims have. The victims will at least have an opportunity to protect themselves. A warning system won't solve jack shit.
"When seconds count, first responders are just minutes away."
I'd take this further, even though it's longer:
--When seconds count, first responders (police) are still minutes too far away.--
It's a sobering, scary fact and as such, knowing how to defensively fight back when necessary and learning how to properly and safely handle a firearm is all the more necessary even now and, thus, you alone are responsible for your own safety and of those with you, not the police.
Its funny that the reporter keeps on agreeing with Mr. Evans, even though he is arguing with what ifs and speculation while Mr. Lewis is using facts and data to support his opinion. I wonder which side she is on?
Keep fighting the good fight guys! Thanks for the video.
What you will end up doing is moving gun sales underground to a criminal black market, which cares not who they sell to. A bad guy is going to get what he wants, even if it's banned.
What outlawing guns would do is keep people who wouldn't have had a problem committing crime in the first place from buying guns.
Then, of course, there's that 2nd Amendment, which recently was confirmed to protect an individual right.
It's not as simple as just outlawing guns. Period.
Yes Garret, because even the possibility that a student could defend himself is too extreme to even permit him to have a fighting chance. The arguments Garret was using were based on fear. I mean, at the end where Garret said, "we need to focus on prevention," I can't help but think, "yeah, because disarmed citizens make psychopaths think twice before they decide to go on a rampage." The guy is an idiot. I don't care what he went through, it's my life and I have the right to preserve it!
Of course, fear can help one to make reasonable choices for the circumstances, provided the fear is balanced by rationality.
Mr. Lewis is fearful about a school shooting, but his way of thinking and acting on that fear is rational by being properly prepared for the possibility, knowing the fact that it can happen again at anytime.
Mr. Evans is also fearful, but he thinks and acts irrationally by wanting to take away guns from all, including those that didn't do it and never would.
4:17 -well let me bring garrett in, because your rational arguments on this subject may convince some of our viewers that you are right, and we cant have that now can we.
Garret can feel free to be a victim again. I for one when the rules change in our favor will carry for self defence, self being the key word. And when a mass shooting occours, I'm sorry but, I will NOT go look for the shooter hoping to save lives. I will run clear of danger. I will only do something if I'm in a reasonable fear for my life, and I'll be sorry you choose not to carry and depended on school and police to save you.
I'm more for dialogue over debate. It is open-minded and it awakens new ideas. In debate, we listen only to find flaws in the opposing party, remain close-minded, and keep the belief that there is a right answer and someone has it. Dialogue may remain open-ended. We don't know where it will go but we do know that we will reach an increased understanding, connection, and/or possibility.
What happens when you provoke a student who happens to being concealing. It may prevent mass shooting but how many manslaughter cases would arise? I only trust screening so far, a physiologist can't convince me that any human being isn't vulnerable to being provoked. It's a very good debate though. Intelligent guys provided a clean debate.
I say yes if the students are properlly trained and if the teachers and campuses police enforce the laws. The students who get the guns should be screened for any mental disablities or any prior arrests. In order for the campus police to keep track of the students who carried gun is by giving them an photo id amd have them log in or not whether going to classes or leaving campuses. Do like what do on cruise ship when you leave the boat.
Robert A. Heinlein said, "An armed society is a polite society". If everyone knows that everyone has a gun you would have to be pretty stupid to even think you're going to start some trouble. God cannot do everything for us. And that does not mean that I don't believe in God. You want peace? Guns make peace. The next time you're in a hostage situation you're not going to say "I wish I weren't here, I wish it would end now, why is nobody doing anything! Why must it take so long for this to end?"
Garret, is not speaking very logically. He just seems angry. I'm for being allowed to be able to protect myself where ever I'm at. Weather it be on campus or anywhere.
It's just sad that Evans lived to tell a lie. These students who have their concealed handgun permit already carry their gun off campus. Carrying a gun is a great responsibility. Evans feared students might use the gun out of anger? That is most unlikely. I am not really following his logic and reasoning. The only way to stop another campus shooting in the future is to encourage everyone both professors and students to carry their firearms.
If a licensed person can’t carry on a campus they defiantly will not be able to shoot the crazy bastard that is bent on killing everyone. The vast majority of shootings like these happen in areas where concealed carry is banned. Crazy people may be crazy but they are not all stupid. How many mass shootings occur in areas where it is likely that most people are armed? NONE!
if officers cant hit shit then why is it different if a student cant hit shit are we suppose to just let the gun man run his course then go care for the wounded
no human being should be allowed to carry a gun. even for safety. i say, we destroy every gun on the planet. what is the point of violence? EVER? even for self defense?
@nmh2112 so if i was raping you mother and afterwards i cumshot on your father cut there eyes out of there head and lit them on fire while i made you watch, we would sit down and sing around the campfire
Because it's possible to destroy all guns in the world, right? Yeah, and it's possible to stop people from smoking, using drugs, drinking alcohol or using fossil fuels right? You, sir, (I'm not usually brought to these words so congrats) are a COMPLETE fucking moron.
@mdrdrm what did you gain from responding to me....other than feeding your own ego? REALLY think about. what did you possibly gain as a human being from writing that comment?
the answer: calling other people out on youtube (an online safehaven for people who don't have the balls to say shit to peoples faces) feeds your ego because it makes you feel good that you're 'right' and the other person is 'wrong'. that's all that comment did.
Why do anything? Why have any conversation? Why did you post your retarded comment that all guns should be banned in the first place?
Because you were wrong and wrong ideas and ideologies are bad and should be stopped with the proper application of logic. You want to know what bad logic ultimately leads to? War and death.
Though, I suppose I have no problem with you as long as you admit that you were wrong.
That guy is an idiot. Saturday night special? Do people still use that stupid word? Criminals are smarter? This guy is nuts? Its a good thing Evens doesn't own guns. What a putz. That was actually a pretty fair debate for CNN. I expected it to be more anti-gun.
NOT OLD ENOUGH OR RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH????????????????????????
Yet a 21 year old can drink, buy a handgun and long gun, carry everywhere else, VOTE, and DIE FOR MY COUNTRY. I don't know about you but that sounds pretty friggen responsible. Oh wait I can't rent a car I'm not 25 DARN.
Lewis definitely seemed more persuasive to me; he used measured, thoughtful statements and logic. Evans on the other hand, comes up with such persuasive arguments as "the bad guys will get Uzis" and "professors will get mad and shoot people". He seems to have not only not considered possible counterarguments to his points, but he seems to not have any faith in anyone to not just kill someone at the drop of a hat. Sounds like either debilitating paranoid fear or projection.
Evans is st-st-stuttering around the debate. The other guy has his poop in a group. If students already have a concealed ID then what the hell changes when they walk onto campus? The university is taking away rights that the state has already given the student.
Evans has been through a traumatic event. He has experienced fight or flight in his situation. He is still shooken up and just a strong believer in flight. He would rather run then meet force with force, but that is why others who are willing to stand their ground, should carry.
couldnt they have asked someone else to debate the consealed carry guy, discussions are always more interesting when one side isnt just spouting ignorance and noncence
What an idiot. His argument was people are safer not carrying guns when some criminal decides hes going to kill the people around him. How is that safer? What a dumb ass, you sure he didn't hit his head when he got shot in the legs? Kinda sounds to me like this interview was fake or he was at least a NWO spook. Cuz they defiantly don't want more educated people to cary guns. I bet they will use their media assets to attack this new push for more guns.
Betty Nguyen here asks a bad question. REGARDLESS of whether or not I can hit the guy AT LEAST I HAVE THE OPTION. I sure as hell know it's more effective than my fists. Fist vs gun. Gun wins. Gun vs gun. Evens the odds.
This guy is so fucking stupid lol. He get shot twice and still doesn't realize why. Are you sure he only got shot in his legs and not his brain? Seems to be mentally disabled the way he has no logic.
@OKG2000 If students at Virginia Tech had it together enough to take out cell phones and call 911 or rush to barricade doors, why would you assume that armed students would freeze and never get their weapons out? Nobody is suggesting changing the rules at off-campus parties and bars, the places where most of the "WILD" times occur. The same licensed individuals who aren't getting drunk and shooting people outside of campus are the ones who wouldn't be getting drunk and shooting people on campus.
That Evans goof is reading from a script or something. He can't honestly feel that way. What a clown. I'm a college student with a permit to carry ((not on campus but hope the law passes)) and I would honestly feel MORE comfortable if I had my CCW. I carry it everywhere else anyways (legally). If I have to pick between relying on the response time of the police and my CCW Glock27.... I'm going to pick my Glock every single time.
Betty Nguyen, dose not have a sence of reality. Liberal media, control the public with fear. Garret Evans fell for it. I'm glad ther are people like W. Scott Lewis that don't!
Evans looks so confused about life. "Student are too stressed to carry guns, professors are to stressed to carry guns, hell tha po po too stressed to carry guns" Is this guy really a college student??
Are you sure Evans did not get shot in the head because he does not make any sense. "I find this very inappropriate" but i showed up for CNN anyway... what???
One thing i will agree on is that if allava sudden EVERYONE is allowed a gun that can put certain students on edge, giving a bunch of 20 somit year olds the right to carry during college ''WILD'' times is just fucking stupid, u cant do that..that many ppl as a whole just arent responsible enuff to handle that shit...wud be nice to have that kinda protection becuz it wud be handy in these situations but humans are just fucking stupid in general and it just wouldnt work
@OKG2000 Even though I don't think we should be required to obtain permits to carry, if I (as a 21 year old college student) can obtain a permit to carry virtually anywhere, I don't see why I can't carry on campus. I've already been approved to carry by the gov't, so a college campus is no different than any other public property that I can carry on.
For a start...99% of u wuda froze in that situation, whether u had a weapon or not, doubt u wuda got ur 'weapons' out and started a shoot out! this aint the fucking movies, the LAST thing u expect to happen is some pysco walking into ur classroom and killing everyone in site, u wudnt know wat to do and wud be scared out of ur mind, sure it wud be nice to say ''if i was there i wuda got out my gun and blasted back!'' not that easy...stone cold FEAR can freeze u
@OKG2000 youtube "school shooting stopped by two students with guns" there are cases of school shootings being nipped in the bud by armed civilians interveneing.
As far as I know all or atleast almost all of the school shootings has been done in gun free zones, coincidence? hardly. Gunviolence is less rampant where good people are allowed to defend themselfs.
Emergency alert? Well an emergency alert won't make a damn difference. Where were y'all gonna run, the guy chained the doors.
The NYPD has it mandatory that officers put in range time every 6 months. The average gun owner goes once a week or more. That's why the NYPD's hit rate is 28%...which is PISS POOR! My newborn cousin can outshoot most of the NYPD!
If you don't want a nervous and uncomfortable situation...STAY HOME, SON!
they always bring up situations that have nothing to do with the one at hand..he wouldve wished someone had a gun while he was getting shot.every situation is diffrent
Nguyen and Evans overlooked an important point, having a concealed weapon is just that CONCEALED, the raging gunman will have no idea who is armed which gives the carrier the element of surprise. It doesn't matter if the attacker is wielding and AK-47. Evans was overall speaking from a completely emotional standpoint.
Wow. I don't know that I'd call this a debate as much as pure ownage on the part of Lewis. It's funny how the liberal CNN host tries to take sides with Evans, only to have him respond like he's mentally handicapped. Seriously, CNN tried to pull a tear jerker here getting a school shooting victim to talk down about guns, but instead they got a fucking retard that helped show us how stupid these anti-gun idiots actually are.
the part where she talks about more firearms on campus will make bad guys react more vilont........ there has never been a mass shooting at a gun show.
The fact is the law now would jail a person who simply carried onto a campus. All that is being discussed is eliminating that provision. This isn't about whether guns should be on campus, because this law will not and has not prevented such. All that it can do is jail those who are on campus with a gun. Are we ready to say that everyone on campus with a gun deserves jail? The perpetrators allready get life, they don't care. I hate when people conflate behavior with laws- laws only penalize
Another thing that concerns me about Evans is that, because armed self defense is not a perfect solution, he'd much rather take the capability away from the law-abiding, which essentially assures that a madman needs not worry about an armed repulse.
If I were in a situation where there was a school shooting, I'd rather have the chance to be able to shoot back and survive rather than have no means to defend myself at all and basically assure my demise if a shooter ever trains his sights on me.
Evans has passion of sorts but he has a frightening lack of wisdom.
You can engage as much prevention as possible, but it won't stop bad people from existing, including those who will murder for no good reason.
As bad people will always exist, you must be prepared to defend yourself, including being responsible in your ability and capability of fighting in defense as well as not using force when it isn't called for.
As for recklessness, all you can do is hold the irresponsible accountable.
he's probably getting paid alot of money to read all this shit...you can tell he is reading from a script..concealed weapons would reduse violence on campus. an early alert system is bullshit. in the time it would take for the police to get there i could pull my gun and kill the person long before the damn cops get there.
The REAL crime in question is how in the world Evans got accepted to college! I thought affirmative action was no longer legal. Maybe he's there on a sports scholarship, because he is about as intelligent as a goldfish.
"The criminal mind is far more advanced than the collegiate mind"... LMAO!!! Yeah, maybe his. Is it just me, or is Evans kind of slow. The VT shooter was mentally disturbed according to all the professionals... I guess his mind was still more advanced than Evans.
It took the shooter many many minutes to go around and execute people. It did not happen in a few seconds. Someone shoots up someone in a few seconds, yes, it would be very doubtful to be able to stop it. But if someone is walking around executing people over a longer time period, then YES, chances are very good that a conceal carry person could intervene and stop the shooting. Apples and Oranges. There is not a problem with CCW people. The problem lies with the common nut job!!
Evans is not speaking his own words. Liberal propaganda. He is reading of a teleprompter. If a student were to enter a large auditorium i guarantee there will be more than one person with a concealed weapon. A legal age individual can certainly handle the situations. The only problem is there cant be a trial period. Someone has to step up and pass a state law and take a chance.
"the criminal mind is far more advanced than the collegiate mind." Mr. Evans, you are a walking talking testimony to the reality of that fact. That is, of course, if your mind is representative of the collegiate mind.
doesnt Evens just sound stupid, uninformed and without any common sense.I mean what a moronic thing to say that if someone came into a class room with an automatic weapon and started firing that ccw holders wouldn't matter. I guess my brain just doesn't compute the logic of some people
She should of asked Evans if concealed carry was allowed on the campus and he had a gun, could he have stopped the violence or scared off the gunman at the very least. He would of stumbled over his words or would of had a deer in the headlights look. Or if those poor students who heard him coming down the hall had a weapon, if it were allowed, could have stopped that sick bastard.
Let's wait for the cops and swat teams to get to us while the gunman is outside the door or walking around blasting everybody getting closer to you, FUCK, plain and simple cops are there to arrest and draw chalk lines, when you are in a dire situation with someone blasting away, you need to have the right to blast back, not wait for cops to assemble.
Garrett Evans is a complete and utter moron, I have been in a shoot out, I agree it's not a nice experience, but there's a high chance of repelling an attacker with other law-abiding citizens carrying handguns... seriously an AK-47 is not some sort of futuristic weapon that gives you body armor as soon as you hold it, one shot out of a .45 in the chest will knock anyone as if a sledgehammer had slammed you, Garrett's argument is extremely stupid, he's an insecure coward, nothing more.
Garret Evans is afraid. I can't say I blame him. Being shot is not something you just get over. However I disagree with his perspective and find his points hold no weight.
Also, to everyone, people with concealed carry go through background checks to show that they're not total whack jobs. Most concealed carriers are more responsible than your average citizen and statistically are far less likely to commit a violent crime.
The GT survivor claims that students would "act on impulse" because they are immature, yet when asked about Professors carrying, he makes the same argument. So does he feel that NOBODY on a college campus is mentally mature enough to carry a weapon? What about campus police? I am under the belief that if someone WANTS to do it, they will find a way, regardless of weather or not the campus allows students to carry. But at least if students carry, they have a chance at preventing tragedy.
Not all college students are mature enough to carry guns. If you believe that, you are really naive. Guns don't need to be on campus as there should be plenty of security to prevent the need for that. Most colleges tend to be safer than other environments. Feel free to arm yourself at home, but don't expect other parents to let their kids play with yours.
Well, the army screens people for one thing. They don't just allow anyone into the army although it seems so easy. Convicted criminals are not allowed into the army. Soldiers get A LOT of training on how to deal with weapons, much more than the average gun owner.
Well, thats where we disagree. I haven't been in the army yet but I have heard you practice for a few days to qualify and thats all you have to do for basic.
You have to take more classes than you would in basic training for your concealed weapons permit, same with hunting. Only 1 out of 10 in the army is combat oriented, you know that right?
Not necessarily buddy. GO watch the CNN debate should guns be allowed on campus with former marine Mike Guzman, who is/was a college student who supports concealed carry on campus. He makes a valid argument when he says that concealed carriers are mostly hobbiest who practice shooting their weapons almost every weekend, as opposed to marines or police officers who are only required to shoot during annual testing.
I know that, there are plenty of immature seniors. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to bear arms. Who is going to judge who is mature enough to have what?
I don't see how mental maturity has anything to do the fact that they are adults.... Its not anyones place to make that judgment either. Its simple, if they are old enough to fight for our country then they are old enough to have a weapon.
I really don't understand. These people want to obey the law, keep themselves under the eye of the government. Why would you care?
You do realize the same people that want to obey the laws have the guns anyway..... They can bring them if they wanted to. You can buy assault rifles and shotguns here in Oregon at 18 with no background checks with private deals.
If someone wants to kill someone it easy... They would.. But they don't. The criminals do....
So it doesn't really matter how mature they are mentally, they fact is that at 18 you can arm yourself.
Someone planning on doing harm to someone is not going to care about what the law is...
I don't know how much maturity has to do with it either. I have always been mature for my age, well more so than my peers, but I've been shooting since I was 3. I'd have to put the gun on the ground and use my legs to help cock it.
I did just fine... So don't give me that shit about college students.
Haha...don't be bitter over sour milk. If his argument is so weak why is this the only response to the 4+ comments he's posted in regards to your last statement? Dude is tearing you up and all you have to say is "your argument is weak". If you think his argument is weak PROVIDE SOMETHING TO PROVE YOUR ARGUMENT.
I did read the comments you asshole and you completely got destroyed haha. Don't be such a little bitch. When someone makes an argument you try to recant it reasonably. You don't just say " Your argument is weak" or "learn to read".
Shut the fuck up, asshole. You're the one with the problem. If you can't take the heat as in having a constructive dialogue, get out of the kitchen. "Wah, that person disagrees with me." Stupid idiot. Yes, learn to read because you obviously don't know how to follow an argument. I'm done with you. Your problem is that you can't accept when people disagree with you because it's a threat to your ego.
@jstele Cool you jets bro. Just because the vast majority of the people that responded to your comments disagreed with you don't have to spew useless comments like "learn to read" and "Shut, the fuck up asshole".
college students arent mature enough to carry a gun to class? why do we 18 tear olds join the military and go to war only to come home and get killed in class?
we are not hating on him. we are simply stating that his opinions are based on premises that don't come to the conclusion he is trying to state. it is as if he is trying to use the fact that he was almost a victim to give the impression he knows the answer to every problem derived from mass murders.
That guy Garrett Evans seemed very ignorant, immature, and simplistic in his "arguments". He seemed like a 10 year old trying to argue with an adult why his sister shouldn't be allowed to stay up past 9. He just ran from one false, incoherent, or nonsensical excuse to another. There's no reason that schools shouldn't allow trained and licensed concealed carry permit holders to be armed there too. Public taxpayer funded schools more than anywhere should allow the exercise of 2nd Amendment rights.
I really wish there was some way to prevent violent crimes like Evans said, but we live in a shitty world. Sometimes the one surefire way to violence is simply more violence. It sucks, but it's true.
My head almost exploded when he said that professors would get angry and shoot their students if they could carry concealed firaarms in school... Because that happens everywhere else!
let me guess.... Garret Evans is in college on a sports scholarship right???
freakin retard.
if he had the right to carry a weapon he wouldve had a chance to save himself & other victims.
why do all the anti-gunners embrace this gay ass victim mentality like 911 is a magical miracle number that makes cops automatically appears and saves lives.
False. The good college athletes have kids lining up to take tests for them (see Memphis and Derrick Rose as an example). If you suck dick or nobody cares about your sport you better brush up on your books.
I'm with you man!!!! I carry concealed myself. I'll carry no matter what!!! I carry everywhere I go. And I pray to God that I never have to use it! I hope to just go through my life with my family knowing that I'll do everything in my power to protect them!!!! And thats the key word.. "PROTECT"
ok so the student acts like an early alert system would help and when you train to get a CCW you train to shoot someone anyway. and if your gonna come in with an AK47 a pistol can still take him out just as easily exactly what scott said. i admit most students usually are not mature enough and thats what a really thorough backround check and mental test is for.
An angry upset professor will not try to use his weapon if he thinks i have a weapon, an armed society is a polite society. the evans kid is just ignorant to the situation he thinks because he was shot he is knowledgable on the matter
U said it all. He doesnt know shit. Law didnt stop the shooter, police didnt stop the shooter, and students were not allowed to stop the shooter. Stupid brady bullshit campaign is full of shit.
What a total hack job by the 'reporter'. The anti-gun fellow's philosophy was that no one should have guns. "High strung professors would shoot students. Students would be afraid that other students had guns."
He's traumatized for having been shot (who wouldn't be), but that is clouding his judgement.
All of his arguments are without merit. The maniac is going to bring a gun to campus DESPITE of regulations.
Damn, gun control keeps guns from citizens, NOT criminals.
The people that are the same age of students on campus are fighting for their country right now in Afghanistan and Iraq with assault weapons not pistols.
It's pretty clear Evans is using red herrings and other such logical fallacies. I don't think he once actually addressed the arguments the other guy put forward. He kept changing the line of reasoning (I use the word "reasoning" very loosely).
All his points were driven by emotions and fear, not by reason. But that is somewhat understandable since he went through something so tramatic. Still, my pity for him does not convince me of his position.
Lol "students are not mature enough to carry a gun"
Hmm.. How old are our soldiers?? It seems to me that this guy feels helpless. He has a fear of guns and can see no solution other than ban guns. He wants the world to be peace and love. That would be nice but that is not the real world. I am female and I have prevented a violent crime against myself just by having a gun. As soon as the guy saw I was armed he left. Criminals look for unarmed victims. That simple.
Mr. Evans here is quite ignorant. He seems to think that high-strung (in the case of professors) automatically means murderous. That's sort of a big step for a person to take. Obviously he was not raised in a responsible gun-owners' home and he fails to seperate the responsible owners of guns with those that use them for crime. In his mind he can only attribute guns with the bad and those without guns as the good. I hope he eventually sees the falicy in this.
Garret Evans is an idiot. College age adults are not mature enough to carry guns? Hello Garret Evans (and the like), have you ever heard of the US Military? I actually appreciate this debate and believe that the interviewer was fair. Garrett Evans does, though, make a brilliant point. He was, at the time of this debate, a recently recovered victim. Even he admits this. Most of his arguments seem to be affected by the emotions surrounding his experience (and, in fairness, who can blame him?). Had he, perhaps, been saved from injury by a legally authorized, trained, conceal and carry holder, would his point of view be different?

Guns should be outlawed. Period.
godnotfound 8 months ago
@godnotfound
Okay. Say we outlaw guns.
How are you going to make sure you get them all off the street in a manner that is completely within legal realm of law enforcement?
You're thinking of having the military help out? You can't do that according to the Posse Comitatus Act.
Thinking about going into each and every home to look for guns and take them? You can't do that according to the 4th and 5th Amendments.
Watcher3223 8 months ago
@godnotfound
Period.
Watcher3223 8 months ago
@godnotfound I know; It's brilliantly simple. Why don't we just outlaw crime? Geez.
maxfirepower 4 months ago
Yes Garret, because even the possibility that a student could defend himself is too extreme to even permit him to have a fighting chance. The arguments Garret was using were based on fear. I mean, at the end where Garret said, "we need to focus on prevention," I can't help but think, "yeah, because disarmed citizens make psychopaths think twice before they decide to go on a rampage." The guy is an idiot. I don't care what he went through, it's my life and I have the right to preserve it!
groam6666 9 months ago 2
@groam6666
Watcher3223 8 months ago

This world is in desperate need of dialogue.

What happens when you provoke a student who happens to being concealing. It may prevent mass shooting but how many manslaughter cases would arise?

Good grief what a nut.
So because the bad guys might come in with an AK47 lets just stay DEFENSELESS ?????

If we allow CCW on campus a HUNDRED or more LAWFULLY armed students WILL have a good chance of STOPPING the shooter !

@OKG2000 Even though I don't think we should be required to obtain permits to carry, if I (as a 21 year old college student) can obtain a permit to carry virtually anywhere, I don't see why I can't carry on campus.

Watcher3223 1 year ago
Evans has passion of sorts but he has a frightening lack of wisdom.
You can engage as much prevention as possible, but it won't stop bad people from existing, including those who will murder for no good reason.
As bad people will always exist, you must be prepared to defend yourself, including being responsible in your ability and capability of fighting in defense as well as not using force when it isn't called for.
As for recklessness, all you can do is hold the irresponsible accountable.

But at least if students carry, they have a chance at preventing tragedy.
andystubblefield 1 year ago
Not all college students are mature enough to carry guns. If you believe that, you are really naive. Guns don't need to be on campus as there should be plenty of security to prevent the need for that. Most colleges tend to be safer than other environments. Feel free to arm yourself at home, but don't expect other parents to let their kids play with yours.
jstele 1 year ago
Then why are we arming 18 year olds with grenades and allowing them to drive tanks?
If you have a GED you can get grenades and fully automatic weapons.
You can be old enough to die in a foreign land fighting for so called freedom and then when you come home not be allowed to have a pistol...
Tell me how that makes sense...
Martial024 1 year ago 2
Well, the army screens people for one thing. They don't just allow anyone into the army although it seems so easy. Convicted criminals are not allowed into the army. Soldiers get A LOT of training on how to deal with weapons, much more than the average gun owner.
jstele 1 year ago
Well, thats where we disagree. I haven't been in the army yet but I have heard you practice for a few days to qualify and thats all you have to do for basic.
You have to take more classes than you would in basic training for your concealed weapons permit, same with hunting. Only 1 out of 10 in the army is combat oriented, you know that right?
Martial024 1 year ago
@jstele
Not necessarily buddy. GO watch the CNN debate should guns be allowed on campus with former marine Mike Guzman, who is/was a college student who supports concealed carry on campus. He makes a valid argument when he says that concealed carriers are mostly hobbiest who practice shooting their weapons almost every weekend, as opposed to marines or police officers who are only required to shoot during annual testing.
theoberman 1 year ago 2
Ive heard people calling high school students kids but come on... College students??? Who's being naive?
Martial024 1 year ago
Just because someone is smart enough to get into college does not mean that they are mature. Age does not signify maturity.
jstele 1 year ago
I know that, there are plenty of immature seniors. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to bear arms. Who is going to judge who is mature enough to have what?
I don't see how mental maturity has anything to do the fact that they are adults.... Its not anyones place to make that judgment either. Its simple, if they are old enough to fight for our country then they are old enough to have a weapon.
Its not rocket science.
Martial024 1 year ago
I really don't understand. These people want to obey the law, keep themselves under the eye of the government. Why would you care?
You do realize the same people that want to obey the laws have the guns anyway..... They can bring them if they wanted to. You can buy assault rifles and shotguns here in Oregon at 18 with no background checks with private deals.
If someone wants to kill someone it easy... They would.. But they don't. The criminals do....
Martial024 1 year ago
So it doesn't really matter how mature they are mentally, they fact is that at 18 you can arm yourself.
Someone planning on doing harm to someone is not going to care about what the law is...
I don't know how much maturity has to do with it either. I have always been mature for my age, well more so than my peers, but I've been shooting since I was 3. I'd have to put the gun on the ground and use my legs to help cock it.
I did just fine... So don't give me that shit about college students.

Your argument is weak. End of story.
jstele 1 year ago
Haha...don't be bitter over sour milk. If his argument is so weak why is this the only response to the 4+ comments he's posted in regards to your last statement? Dude is tearing you up and all you have to say is "your argument is weak". If you think his argument is weak PROVIDE SOMETHING TO PROVE YOUR ARGUMENT.
theoberman 1 year ago
Learn to read.
jstele 1 year ago
I did read the comments you asshole and you completely got destroyed haha. Don't be such a little bitch. When someone makes an argument you try to recant it reasonably. You don't just say " Your argument is weak" or "learn to read".
theoberman 1 year ago
Shut the fuck up, asshole. You're the one with the problem. If you can't take the heat as in having a constructive dialogue, get out of the kitchen. "Wah, that person disagrees with me." Stupid idiot. Yes, learn to read because you obviously don't know how to follow an argument. I'm done with you. Your problem is that you can't accept when people disagree with you because it's a threat to your ego.
jstele 1 year ago
@jstele Cool you jets bro. Just because the vast majority of the people that responded to your comments disagreed with you don't have to spew useless comments like "learn to read" and "Shut, the fuck up asshole".
theoberman 1 year ago
@jstele Point out an instance where a LEGAL conceal carry person caused a problem on a campus? Proof is in the pudding, not FEAR of non sense

Mr. Evans is a moron with weak points
konak85 1 year ago 5
Evans is trying to cash in on what happened to him.
He said that the criminal mind is more advanced than the college mind... Yea, that's why so the prisons are full of rocket scientists.
V.T. was a "safe place to learn" until somebody who did not care about the law started killing all of the unarmed people there.

i think those bullets rotted Evan's brain. I'd feel more comfortable if i could carry on campus.

we are not hating on him. we are simply stating that his opinions are based on premises that don't come to the conclusion he is trying to state. it is as if he is trying to use the fact that he was almost a victim to give the impression he knows the answer to every problem derived from mass murders.

RustyDaleShackleford 2 years ago 3
I really wish there was some way to prevent violent crimes like Evans said, but we live in a shitty world. Sometimes the one surefire way to violence is simply more violence. It sucks, but it's true.

Damn Evans is a little bitch. He reminds me why I hate liberals so much.
macaddict34 2 years ago 20
My head almost exploded when he said that professors would get angry and shoot their students if they could carry concealed firaarms in school... Because that happens everywhere else!

That sure was a great point Evans made. How old is this asshole? 8?

let me guess.... Garret Evans is in college on a sports scholarship right???
freakin retard.
if he had the right to carry a weapon he wouldve had a chance to save himself & other victims.
why do all the anti-gunners embrace this gay ass victim mentality like 911 is a magical miracle number that makes cops automatically appears and saves lives.
arm yourself !! and Defend yourself !

I agree. Campus rent-a-cops can't do a damn thing in a real situation anyhow. By the time they respond its all over.
macaddict34 2 years ago 5
you cant get a scholarship if your stupid you have to pass your classes to a have the responsibility to play ass Fuck
LegoGuy422 2 years ago
False. The good college athletes have kids lining up to take tests for them (see Memphis and Derrick Rose as an example). If you suck dick or nobody cares about your sport you better brush up on your books.

They can blah blah blah all they want. I will still carry my 9mm and use it only if I have to. At the very least, I feel better carrying it.
Mikevdog 2 years ago 2
I'm with you man!!!! I carry concealed myself. I'll carry no matter what!!! I carry everywhere I go. And I pray to God that I never have to use it! I hope to just go through my life with my family knowing that I'll do everything in my power to protect them!!!! And thats the key word.. "PROTECT"

does Evans know that people (both good and bad) carry guns on his campus now?
JiveTaxi 2 years ago 2
ok so the student acts like an early alert system would help and when you train to get a CCW you train to shoot someone anyway. and if your gonna come in with an AK47 a pistol can still take him out just as easily exactly what scott said. i admit most students usually are not mature enough and thats what a really thorough backround check and mental test is for.
Takata240 2 years ago
An angry upset professor will not try to use his weapon if he thinks i have a weapon, an armed society is a polite society. the evans kid is just ignorant to the situation he thinks because he was shot he is knowledgable on the matter

Damn, gun control keeps guns from citizens, NOT criminals.
spike8088 2 years ago 4
I think a .45ACP hollow point to the head would influence some crack pot on a killing spree in a favorable way.
tommysch 2 years ago 5
The people that are the same age of students on campus are fighting for their country right now in Afghanistan and Iraq with assault weapons not pistols.
JBau3rCTU 2 years ago
It's pretty clear Evans is using red herrings and other such logical fallacies. I don't think he once actually addressed the arguments the other guy put forward. He kept changing the line of reasoning (I use the word "reasoning" very loosely).
All his points were driven by emotions and fear, not by reason. But that is somewhat understandable since he went through something so tramatic. Still, my pity for him does not convince me of his position.
sgtssstutter 2 years ago
You lost me at your first statement Evans.
JessMenu 2 years ago
Lol "students are not mature enough to carry a gun"
Hmm.. How old are our soldiers?? It seems to me that this guy feels helpless. He has a fear of guns and can see no solution other than ban guns. He wants the world to be peace and love. That would be nice but that is not the real world. I am female and I have prevented a violent crime against myself just by having a gun. As soon as the guy saw I was armed he left. Criminals look for unarmed victims. That simple.
shananagans5 2 years ago 5
