Eu sou brasileira e nunca tinha ouvido falar em Eliane Coelho até essa apresentação... Pena que não há ainda uma cultura voltada a música erudita em geral, já que esta arte tão magnífica é fundamental para entendermos mais profundamente a nossa cultura atual, principalmente na música.

I am Brazilian and I had never heard of Eliane Coelho, before this presentation ... Too bad there is not yet a culture focused on classical music in general, since this art so magnificent is fundamental to a deeper understanding of our current culture.

if this were bel canto, I would scoff at this performance, but it's not, it's verismo, and this is the way to sing it. bel canto is about purity of line and tone, executing perfect technique and keeping the voice even all the way up and down the range. verismo is about singing with grit, emotion and conviction. it's sorta similiar to gospel or soul (I'm sure Aretha Franklin would appreciate this performance if she heard it)

Two soprani I've heard in my whole life that could really show Gioconda's drama in this very aria. Maria Callas and Eliane Coelho. Eliane Coelho and Maria Callas.

SInger like Miss Coelho makes opera worthwhile to listen.

Definitely modeled after Callas, but she really pulls it off. I hope she will come to San Francisco soon.

I have to wonder if she stayed in architecture school what her work would have looked like. Could she have channeled a similar passion through another art?

Wow! Great singing....temperament to burn! I would love to hear her do this live. Why is so not back at the major houses in Europe and UK, ie. Vienna, Munich, Covent Garden?

Well short answer - it's hard to pull off. It requires a large chorus, ballet dancers, the six leading roles are one of each voice type and all have to be top notch - this here's the soprano.

As always, a very warm, darkish and expressive sound and those deep, amazing chest notes! Coelho did understand the feeling required for this aria and its "over-verismo" style. But always with utmost good taste. ;-)
