when I went to junior high in 1959-63 in Altadena, CA, I rode in Bus 49, a Crown with original Hall-Scott engine, I loved its roar between gear changes. The driver used this same bus on Line ET 3 for many years, one of a number of routes for the school. They're built like a tank. Thanks for sharing.
This bus is from the very small high school I attended back in the 80's, we only had 7 buses. The school district sold this bus back in the late 80's, I cant believe it still has the name on it and it looks so good!
This bus originally had a gas engine in it and back in the early 80's, they had a proffesional repower done on it which included a 671 detroit and a roadranger 10 speed transmission. The bus also has a jake brake. If I recall, the bus is a 1957. I'm so glad you posted this!
Sad Sad Sad that we just got rid of our last crown in our school district... I would have loved to drive one. Now we got one diesel left in our fleet and its an older Blue Bird and the rest are Thomas CNG..
Wow. What a sweet sounding Crown! i would have loved to ride those to school everyday! I rode the usual Generic Blue Birds and Thomas conventionals to school when I was in my teens.
@hoteldennis Crown's had a 5-speed Spicer, 10-speed Eaton-Fuller Roadranger and some had Allison automatics. This bus is a 50's-60's model due to the short windshield so I'd say it has the 5-speed.
@82MB240D You are right on. 1960 was the last year of the narrow windshield. 1957 was the last year of the three black striped sides before they went to two black stripes on the side. So sad these beauties are diminishing. It is amazing that this body style came out in 1947 and was made till 1991 with minor changes.
You just made my 2009 year complete!! This awesome video of a 50's era Crown with jake brake is the most awesome sounding school bus ever made...I am fortunate to have ridden many in the early 70's in the Pajaro Valley Unified school district in Watsonville, Ca.
They are currently going to get rid of 12-1978-1982 era crowns because of emmisions, and am sad to see them go. Thanks again for posting this !!!!!
Those 3 stripes went thru the 50s and onto any crown ordered with wet wall build, not drywall(2 stripes).....

One of the best sounding Detroits I've ever heard. Nothin' like the crisp bark of a well tuned two-stroke. :)

Those had a Cummins 220, flat six. I had one, painted it to look like a huge VW van. It looks like one in the front.
Believe it or not that bus is a 1950 model. You can tell by the three narrow strips on the side and the tail lights.
Yes, they last forever.

@82MB240D
They had two versions of the 5-speed Spicer. There was the straight direct Five:
[with this shift pattern]
R24
135
Just like a truck or car.
Then there was the low underdrive five speed
R13
L24
