Music belonging to one of the best scenes Leone ever did. That whole execution in the rain/bar scene flashback part is one of my favorite movie scenes ever.
To me that is a sin...you got any better ideas?..si ithink gold is better than silver...arggh there isnt any gold in these hills,....oh yes there is.in Messe Verde...mese verde its a city, of course its a city, you ever heard of a bank in the country ?
A beautifully crafted, haunting and brilliant piece - a true masterpiece by a true genius!
Sergio Leone played the score very loud on the set of Once Upon Time America, Eli Wallach said that if the same was done on the set of The Magnificent Seven that He would've rode His horse better!
In these days I had the good fortune to become acquainted with Edda dell'Orso since i played in the same benefit concert in rome with her and other artists. Now she is 75 but her voice is still incredible and unmistakable! She is also a very very kind and generous person.
non è ke è noto anke...il titolo francese è "Il etais une fois la revolution",ed è da precisare che i francesi decisamente più avanti di noi come gusti cinematografici, considerano giustamente Sergio Leone come un genio assoluto del Cinema
Another one of those movies that bomb at their release, but then go on to gain a cult following years after the event. Again Morricone is absolutely on the money with every note of his haunting score. Magnifico!!
"sean sean sean". Coburn's friend. The making of the film talks about the significance of these being the words in the soundtrack, to reflect the guilt that Coburn killed his friend, or the double back-stab back in Ireland.
All'inizio il film avrebbe dovuto intitolarsi "Giù la testa, coglione" ma, per motivi di censura, il titolo fu cambiato. La battuta è comunque presente nella pellicola.
I think I finally understand now why the lyrics "Sean Sean Sean" are in the song. I looked it up and noticed that John's best friend was credited as Sean Nolan. Is his full name mentioned somewhere in the movie?
In the speical features of the DVD, it is said that Leones wife suggests they include the character John Mallorys name in this particular piece. The gaelicised version of the name John is Sean
the truest revolutionary film ever made.....so honest about every revoultion around the world....inspired many an irishman .....duck you british sucker!!!!lol 1979 warrenpoint.
No, No no! Jhon was just fooling around with Sean's Girlfriend, it was just a joke. Sean and the Girl were the couple, and Jhon was the odd man out in the end. You can see it in his flash back's facial expression, he's laughing with them but his smile starts to fade as he realises what's happening.
Well, not sure if you can relate to this or not, but when you're good friends with two people (the three musketeers syndrome) and your two friends hook up, making you the odd man out, you soon realize that your very presence within the group is now awkward, and you shouldn't be there, the friendship is never the same. This has double danger in it if you actually liked one of the friends the other was going out with. The expression and this song captures that feeling perfectly, for me anyway.
You have summed it up perfectly. Since I saw the correct ending...last flashback in the field...I have been pondering about it. Clearly Sean was his very best friend and he deeply loved him and I think he also was in love with the girl. Double danger indeed. Thank you for your explanation. I just love this filmscore.
My favorite Sergio Leone Italian Western, brilliant performances from Rod Steiger and James Coburn, but the film will be remembered because of the flawless score by one of Europes greatest artists Ennio Morricone.
i went to see ennio morricone in concert and he played this tune , it was hairs on back of neck time , hey davis group thx for the commendation i salute you lol
This is such a good pick, I am not worthy of listening to it. j/k. Although on rhapsody, you can download the whole album, listen for free to. It is my favorite Morricone masterpiece.
the singer is saying sean sean sean which is coburns name ie john in irish sean , coburn and steiger are are fricking amazing in that movie , compared to the shite out now its in another class
it is my favorite soundtrack. i remember first i heard I was really irritated by this Shawn, Shawn, Shawn, wondering what's that, is that Chinese language or something.
My friends a question.. I remember a whistle version of this song.. I mean, when the woman starts singing, but instead of voice, whistle... haven´t found it, any help?
According to Christopher Frayling (famous biographer), when Ennio Morricone came at Sergio Leone's home to play the first piano version of Giù La Testa , miss Leone suggested that it would be interesting if a voice could sing "Sean" during the song.
Thank you MorriconeRocks, you make a very respectful and useful job.
Whenever you get depressed, drink a six-pack of Canadian beer, then start pronouncing the names of the Canadian provinces with an exagerated Spanish accent. As an alternative, listen to this tune.
It can be "Sean, Sean, Sean" or "John, John, John" since Sean is the Irish John. I think they say "Sean" but, you know, it's "John y Juan!", so the debate continues.
i have seen a film by Nanni Morretti, in which someone is singing the bigining of that song, it was subtitled in italian like this: " cione, cione..."

perhaps, but when the main fellows name is Sean, wouldn't it make sense if that was what they were singing. Especially since the tune is played when we see Sean's flashback. Seems like they are saying "SEan, sean, sean. what have you done" right (:? But sure, could just be lalala.
His two best performances, IMO, were in On the Waterfront and Doctor Zhivago. He was a seriously underrated actor. He did have a tendency towards ham at times, but hardly obscures his talents.
Well even with his bad accent, he did some great acting in duck you sucker. (The way he reacts to his kids death is understated, but amazing at the same time.) In waterloo he was even better. I think that is the best historical film ever made.
U know, Rod Steiger did a really good job as a Mexicano Bandit....IMO only Eli Wallach did it better, his character of 'Tuco' would be hard to beat but Rod's 'Juan' is funnier & plumbs depths that Tuco only touched on briedly. Still 'Tuco' was so 'alive' & engaging, a tuff choice between these 2 great characters.

Sergio Leone, with its famous trilogy marks an epoch in Western cinema will always remember, and music
Ennio Morricone makes us live a fantasy world when we see these master sequences, all this must be added the unique voice of soprano Edda Dell Orso
that this song is wonderful, this voice also found in other movies, where he also collaborated with Ennio Morricone

I know only Steigers later work. I know he was famous in the 50s and stuff.
Anyway I thought Steiger was great as Napoleon in Waterloo.
