@ justincgs how can you say talentless. you don t watch this video or what. show us your talent with a guitare .u2 have succes because edge is a great guitariste since 30 years
he's like travis barker, it's not like he does anythin impossible, but he does things no one can come up with themselves...ut as a guitarist he is way overrated
Funniest unintended joke: creator of montage just proved that The Edge is the most overrated guitarist ever. Give me enough delay and I can do the same
La energia que transmiten estos chicos no tiene que ver con ningun otro grupo en toda la historia , quizas algun momento de Bethoven , vivaldi Verdi pero menos......
The edge is more of a Hans Zimmer than a traditional guitar player, he's a composer practically and comes up with most of U2's musical arrangements/structure and builds complex musical patters out of just a few notes. He doesn't shred and could care less about that crap, he's in it for the music.
Of course he is one of the greatest ever-with CS,NL,JM right up there.Unlike the other three he perhaps did not see a way out of Bono's sphere-and what would Bono had been without The Edge?
The Edge is not a classic lead guitar player, He enjoys mixing the effects of a guitar sound making simple melodies that becomes in a great melodies with the power of Adam's bass, and organized drum's sequence of larry Mullen.
The three musicians mixing their music give us a unique sound.
The "Bullet the Blue Sky" solo from Zoo TV in Sydney blows my mind every time I see it...probably my favourite solo. It sends shivers down my spine!! And to think I was this close to seeing that concert live...

I know it's a short sample...but one that gets rigth into my heart & soul and often brings me to tears is the solo from "One" from the Live At Slane Castle video. Unfreakingbelieveable.
People who say edge is a shit guitarist seriously need to clean their ears out. He sounds amazing. He may not be a technical wizard on the fret board, but who cares I love his sound. I'm a massive satriani and steve vai fan and they are unbelievable at what they do, leave it out haters!
That "Love Is Blindness" solo gets me every time. It always gives me chills. The emotion he puts into it is beyond belief. People can play that solo but they won't have the emotion Edge has when he plays it.
There needs to be a love button, I can honestly say that i never wanted to play guitar until this man showed me that you can paint with it, thank you for this vid it brought back alot of great memories for me
The way the edge incorporates the sounds in to the songs is nothing short of spectacular. simple, effective, and god damn blessed! Note perfect and soul lifting
the edge is god damn talented no matter what any gobshite says! Just because he doesn't play a million notes at the speed of light that we can't hear or jump up and down on stage like a mental case strumming power chords, doesn't mean he's a shit guitar player.
To all u2/edge haters, this guy Always plays rifts and notes relevant to the song playing every note perfectly! It's irrelevant of the sound effects he uses, that to me makes him more of a great guitarist, exploring new sounds never standing still. A great guy and a great guitarist, keep rocking guys!
Some great guitar solos from a man who by his own admission doesn't like guitar solos! Reason being solos are rarely that interesting, when they are slapped on a song just so the guitarist's fragile ego doesn't implode! Edge has never wanted to be the front man always happy to do simple things that drive the songs and the singer to great things. Young guitarists take note its not about how fast you play or how many technical tricks you have, its about playing what fits the mood of the song.
If you like the "edge", you suck. His solos are so mechanical and fake that it takes the soul out of the sound of a guitar. Want to hear a real guitarist? Listen to ANYONE who plays real music. Fuck You Too.
@adamchandlergogan You're so narrow minded... The guitar is amazing, you can use it play a whole bunch of different styles, and the style in which The Edge plays suits this band perfectly. He is awesome.
This is becoming a timeless debate - is The Edge a great guitar player according to the traditional definition? But who cares? He does what he does, and no one does it better. I'd rather listen to his choice notes than to being bored by the technical prowess of some other guitarist who can't reach the soul as The Edge does.
@veg1024 thats pretty what i told my lil brother the other day. The Edge isnt all flashy, in your face. he just goes out there & does what he does VERY WELL. He & Carlos Santana are in theyre own league
@veg1024 Soul?! The Edge doesn't have soul in his play at all, he uses effects to hide the fact that he's crap! My best friends daughter is 3 years old... give it one more year and she will be more talented than this fool. You can't call yourself The Edge and play things that novice guitar players can keep up with!
I didn't necessarily say that The Edge plays with "soul", what I said was that he reaches the soul, whereas many technically talented guitarists do not. I can only use myself as an example to prove this, but I bet many others would agree. He is extremely creative in finding combinations of guitar notes and effects that make arenas soar; you can always identify an Edge guitar solo. Let me know when your best friend's daughter is ready to say the same.
@veg1024 At the end of the day anybody can play with effects and make it sound good. What he actually plays is amateur, anybody with a decent ear could come up with what he is going. That is why I do not rate him in the slightest [althought I do highly regard how much the band does for charity, no matter how crap I think they are]. He just doesn't cut it as one of the best, it doesn't help that the rest of U2 are not that great either. Give me Stevie Ray Vaughan, Slash, Joe Satriani any day :)
I wouldn't think of trying to "convert" you. To each his own. The Edge has simply moved me more than the other guys you mention. I think you'll have a difficult time convincing most people that the U2 catalog is "crap", or that anyone could have come up with their musical success.
@MH667 Slash? tired ass guitar player.. tired ass style too. Satriani is one of the greats but comparing him to The Edge is apples and oranges. Edge is a sonic master. He creates sounds and moods. He hates solos and showing off guitar playing techniques while playing.
@MH667 First off, why are you even watching this video? If you hate him, go away and watch YOUR favorite. Riduculous. Secondly, it it up to each person to determine if a guitar player has soul. If he doesn't reach you, go find someone else...it doesn't mean he doesn't play/have soul. When I hear "One"...I cry at all the emotion being exposed.
@swarmmaster I watched it once because I was watching Bill Bailey's awesome impression of him on a stand up video on here... and then clicked a side video just to remember how awful he is. Don't worry, I pause it every time I've replied to people on here just so I don't pollute my ears.
of course he is playing for years, no wonder how hard can he play... n its his openion wat he likes to play... but for us, they make gr8 songs, n he very well sets the mood in song... so he ROCKS :)
I love this about the Edge, his solos are so unlike most other "rock guitarists" out there, he creates sonic note attacks that fit a mood and harmony of the song so well in combination with his effects, delay/reverb and it takes the song to a place Bono's voice otherwise cannot carry it, Edge you are THE Edge
He's been playing for 40 years, I think that he can do better than he shows, he has mentioned himself he doesn't wanna act like a normal rock'n'roll guitarist ;)
I finally found found someone that agrees with me..this guy sucks..these are not guitar solos.lets see what happens if we take that delay pedal from him!!!!any one agree???
@MrTomRocha .... Just hear Edge's guitar solo of 1978's Street Mission or Dancing Barefoot. Then you can see that Edge can do those kind of solos you are mentioning without the delay effect. But he is simply not interested to do solo for solo's sake. Rather he wants to amplify a song's atmosphere and sonic landscapes.
This just goes to show you that you don't have to have the fastest fingers in the world to be a great guitarist. Harmony, creativity, timing and innovation are enough to label this rocker one of the greats. Thanks for this incredible montage of classic footage of The Edge in his element.
Great work man, the only changes I'd have to bring up are the Bullet the Blue sky version straight from Sydney is a bit cleaner, though this looked like it so I was confused it didn't sound quite right. Also the album version of The Fly is THE greatest guitar solo of all time, don't use that meh live cut. :-) Still great work, I had a crappy day and this made me feel a hell of a lot better. thank you.
He may not be the most technically impressive guitarist in the wolrd but what he contributes to U2's music is pretty damn excellent. His music comes from what's inside him, not his instruments.
I think you`r rediculos, because you just dont wana face the fact that he sucks at playing and compensates that with expensive gear and stupid show off stuff like using 21 guitar for one show. lol But if you can`t see the diference between an artist and a craftsman i feel sorry for you. Do yourself a favor my friend, stop embarrassing yourself trying to defend the undefendable. And if you want simple, god and true guitar artist- just go listen to some David Gilmour.
@MrXtamar999 I really don't understand what problem you have with him and his playing. And the last time I checked David Gilmour is also a fan of effects but of course bashing The Edge and the rest of U2 is obviously way more popular so why not follow the herd. The Edge is an artist and he's always been one. He doesn't 'hide behind' effects, rather than using them to colour his parts he uses them like instruments and makes them extend his parts, putting their sound in the creative process
Yes, how someone plays guitar matters if he is considerd a guitarist. He never grows as a guitarist. The end result is that he was at the right place at the right time, his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist-he is a craftsman, nothing more.
Yes, how someone plays guitar matters if he is considerd a guitarist. He never grows as a guitarist. The end result is that he was at the right place at the right time, his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist-he is a craftsman, nothing more.
@MrXtamar999 Looking up a video with The Edge solos, I knew I'd find stupid guitar technique cunts taking the piss on The Edge. Congratulations, MrXtamar999, on being that cunt.
@earlyU24U2play Wikipedia: David Howell Evans The Edge. Dave Evans is From ACDC. They Said he's called David Howell Evans on Wikipedia (Dutch) Maybe they have it wrong. Don't know but i always thought it was true. May bad. You really know that's his name?
I'm not trying to pick a fight with any U2 fans, but I just can't seem to understand why everyone thinks he's so fantastic. There was nothing spectacular there.
@RuailleBuailleIRL, it's guitar art within the context of the band. It's the whole package. And it is spectacular. Though yes, U2 are not cool, I understand.
@7da7n37 yes, the solos really do complement ther songs. But plese dont put Edge in the same basket with true guitar legends like Jeff Beck, Elvin Bishop, JJ Cale, Eric Clapton, Lowell George, Jimi Hendrix, Albert Lee, Robbie Robertson, Joe Walsh...its offensive.
@MrXtamar999 Fair enough and I applaud your selection. But U2 as a whole belongs on a whole other level than any of the soloists you listed. Skill at guitar doesn't always equal skill at music. The Edge is a sonic genius. Sure he doesn't like to show off, but that's fine when the songs never need him to.
@7da7n37 I think any average guitarist could do it. Its not using effects, its hiding behind them and geting respect for nothing that bothers me. I watched a video of him demostrating his guitar rig... He dosent know shit about his own equipment, his technician is making it all happen. Its like a monkey playing with a slot machine and becoming a millionare...genius? And his solos are not improvised, its all made up before, so how can he get the vibe from the crowd for his sonic performance?
@MrXtamar999 He built his first electric guitar from scrap when he was a teenager. It took a while for him to build his signature sound, but the fact of the matter is if everyone could do it, then why didn't they? He owns that sound because he invented it! That's more than any guitar instructor and most "true" (whatever that means) guitar legends can say! He wasn't born with these technicians by his side. And regarding the pre-determined solos: if it ain't broke, then don't fix it!
@7da7n37 Yes, how someone plays guitar matters if he is considerd a guitarist. He never grows as a guitarist. The end result is that he was at the right place at the right time, his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist-he is a craftsman, nothing more.
@7da7n37 So what if he built his first guitar from scrap? It has nothing to do with his sound, and if i get it right his first guitar was a brand new explorer he bougt in new york at age of 17The only thing that defines his sound is delay, and the thing with delay is that it allways sounds impresive. Its a cheap trick. As for your question, belive me, there are a lot of guitarist out there using delay in far better ways then Edge . And he did not revolutionize the use of analog delay in any way.
@MrXtamar999 He did infact build his first electric guitar with his brother, He bought his Explorer later. "The only thing that defines his sound is delay" If you actually watched the video there are more parts than just that. Other parts in his in playing really is melodies, emotion and sound. Besides delay is more than a 'cheap trick' his solo for The Fly is drenched in echo and he's made sure that the echoing notes are part of the solo.
@MrXtamar999 A lot of simple guitar techniques can 'always sound impressive' does that make them all 'cheap tricks'? "his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist" Actually most of them are and if you don't realise this then your only real reason for criticizing him is your on prejudice atttitude.
@MrXtamar999 "I watched a video of him demostrating his guitar rig... He dosent know shit about his own equipment, his technician is making it all happen" So ONE little incident where there was a slight mess-up and you presume this? Why not say that to every single guitarist with a technician? STOP PRETENDING TO KNOW EVERYTHING YOU ASSHOLE AND STOP BEING A U2-HATING PREJUDICED PRICK!
@7da7n37 Yes, how someone plays guitar matters if he is considerd a guitarist. He never grows as a guitarist. The end result is that he was at the right place at the right time, his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist-he is a craftsman, nothing more.
@MrXtamar999 Can you further explain this sentence? It's a little bit vague. Isn't any artist, be he a guitarist or not, a craftsman of sorts? Again, he and his brother built their first electric guitar from nothing, meaning he's always been intelligent and has an interest in electronics. One of many reasons why I doubt he leaves all the use and experimentation of his gear to his technicians. That past comment of yours was simply ridiculous.
@7da7n37 Yes, how someone plays guitar matters if he is considerd a guitarist. He never grows as a guitarist. The end result is that he was at the right place at the right time, his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist-he is a craftsman, nothing more.
@MrXtamar999 Of course the edge isn't as good as someone like Eddy Van Halen. Who invented the tapping technique. I respect all those guitarists you suggested, all different styles. What do you think of the guitarist like John Fruciante from RHCP or John Mayer. John mayer got his influence from Jimi Hendrix.
@MrXtamar999 But The Edge how doesn't see himself like those type of guitarist. He likes to categorise himself as a sideman guitarist who stays with the scheduled song, then the gunslinger guitarists who he refers with great guitarists like: Steve Vai, Eddy van Halen or Jimmy Page.

He's an alright guitarist, there's definitely better out there.

:-) Still great work, I had a crappy day and this made me feel a hell of a lot better. thank you.

The '747' sound on Mofo would have been a nice addition. Other than that I can't really think of anything else. Great selection.

I love all the people who don't argue on epic U2 videos. To all the U2 haters, fuck you. It's simple.
Georgikinz 1 year ago 2
He may not be the most technically impressive guitarist in the wolrd but what he contributes to U2's music is pretty damn excellent. His music comes from what's inside him, not his instruments.
johnspence99 1 year ago
I think you`r rediculos, because you just dont wana face the fact that he sucks at playing and compensates that with expensive gear and stupid show off stuff like using 21 guitar for one show. lol But if you can`t see the diference between an artist and a craftsman i feel sorry for you. Do yourself a favor my friend, stop embarrassing yourself trying to defend the undefendable. And if you want simple, god and true guitar artist- just go listen to some David Gilmour.
MrXtamar999 1 year ago

@MrXtamar999 Looking up a video with The Edge solos, I knew I'd find stupid guitar technique cunts taking the piss on The Edge. Congratulations, MrXtamar999, on being that cunt.
Gotta agree with your view on Gilmour, though.

@RuailleBuailleIRL, it's guitar art within the context of the band. It's the whole package. And it is spectacular. Though yes, U2 are not cool, I understand.

@MrXtamar999 it's about the music. And the music is fucking great. These solos compliment the songs very well. Awesome video
7da7n37 1 year ago
@7da7n37 yes, the solos really do complement ther songs. But plese dont put Edge in the same basket with true guitar legends like Jeff Beck, Elvin Bishop, JJ Cale, Eric Clapton, Lowell George, Jimi Hendrix, Albert Lee, Robbie Robertson, Joe Walsh...its offensive.
MrXtamar999 1 year ago
@MrXtamar999 Fair enough and I applaud your selection. But U2 as a whole belongs on a whole other level than any of the soloists you listed. Skill at guitar doesn't always equal skill at music. The Edge is a sonic genius. Sure he doesn't like to show off, but that's fine when the songs never need him to.
7da7n37 1 year ago
@7da7n37 I think any average guitarist could do it. Its not using effects, its hiding behind them and geting respect for nothing that bothers me. I watched a video of him demostrating his guitar rig... He dosent know shit about his own equipment, his technician is making it all happen. Its like a monkey playing with a slot machine and becoming a millionare...genius? And his solos are not improvised, its all made up before, so how can he get the vibe from the crowd for his sonic performance?
MrXtamar999 1 year ago
@MrXtamar999 He built his first electric guitar from scrap when he was a teenager. It took a while for him to build his signature sound, but the fact of the matter is if everyone could do it, then why didn't they? He owns that sound because he invented it! That's more than any guitar instructor and most "true" (whatever that means) guitar legends can say! He wasn't born with these technicians by his side. And regarding the pre-determined solos: if it ain't broke, then don't fix it!

@MrXtamar999 Does it matter how one plays the guitar? Is it not the end result that really matters?
7da7n37 1 year ago
@7da7n37 So what if he built his first guitar from scrap? It has nothing to do with his sound, and if i get it right his first guitar was a brand new explorer he bougt in new york at age of 17The only thing that defines his sound is delay, and the thing with delay is that it allways sounds impresive. Its a cheap trick. As for your question, belive me, there are a lot of guitarist out there using delay in far better ways then Edge . And he did not revolutionize the use of analog delay in any way.
MrXtamar999 1 year ago
@MrXtamar999 He did infact build his first electric guitar with his brother, He bought his Explorer later. "The only thing that defines his sound is delay" If you actually watched the video there are more parts than just that. Other parts in his in playing really is melodies, emotion and sound. Besides delay is more than a 'cheap trick' his solo for The Fly is drenched in echo and he's made sure that the echoing notes are part of the solo.

@MrXtamar999 A lot of simple guitar techniques can 'always sound impressive' does that make them all 'cheap tricks'? "his songs sound nice but they are not his expresion as a guitarist" Actually most of them are and if you don't realise this then your only real reason for criticizing him is your on prejudice atttitude.
johnspence99 1 year ago 2
@MrXtamar999 "I watched a video of him demostrating his guitar rig... He dosent know shit about his own equipment, his technician is making it all happen" So ONE little incident where there was a slight mess-up and you presume this? Why not say that to every single guitarist with a technician? STOP PRETENDING TO KNOW EVERYTHING YOU ASSHOLE AND STOP BEING A U2-HATING PREJUDICED PRICK!

MrXtamar999 1 year ago
@MrXtamar999 Can you further explain this sentence? It's a little bit vague. Isn't any artist, be he a guitarist or not, a craftsman of sorts? Again, he and his brother built their first electric guitar from nothing, meaning he's always been intelligent and has an interest in electronics. One of many reasons why I doubt he leaves all the use and experimentation of his gear to his technicians. That past comment of yours was simply ridiculous.

MrXtamar999 1 year ago
@MrXtamar999 Of course the edge isn't as good as someone like Eddy Van Halen. Who invented the tapping technique. I respect all those guitarists you suggested, all different styles. What do you think of the guitarist like John Fruciante from RHCP or John Mayer. John mayer got his influence from Jimi Hendrix.
U2fanBoy100 4 months ago
@MrXtamar999 But The Edge how doesn't see himself like those type of guitarist. He likes to categorise himself as a sideman guitarist who stays with the scheduled song, then the gunslinger guitarists who he refers with great guitarists like: Steve Vai, Eddy van Halen or Jimmy Page.
