It's a misconception that raw vegetables are better for you. But it is far more important that people eat a variety of fruit and vegetables. While the gut could absorb between three and 4% of the carotenoids in raw carrots, that could increase by up to 5x if they were cooked and mashed. While the gut could absorb between three and four per cent of the carotenoids in raw carrots, that could increase by up to five times if the carrots were cooked and mashed. Cooking helps to release them.
Next thing you know these ignoramuses would be switching to raw milk and undercooked meats. How do you eat potatoes, wheat, or beans like lima beans or kidney beans without cooking them? Eating raw beans can give you a stomach ache. Eating cooked food is more "natural" for the human digestive system because the human digestive system may have evolved to deal with cooked foods. Just don't overcook your foods.
@gongoozler18 It's a raw vegan diet, so being vegan it means they don't eat meats so there is no worry of them wanting to eat undercooked or raw meat & as far as milk goes they don't typically drink milk either, although some that aren't 100% raw vegan will drink raw milk from grass fed animals on a farm, which is WAY healthier than pasteurized, hormone laden, pus filled milk from sick cows with mastitis from forcing them to produce milk. As for beans, they eat baby bean sprouts. Learn some...
Plant enzymes work for plants. The argument that raw foods are good because of their enzymes is lame. Raw foods have their benefits, but not cooking food because it destroys plant enzymes is a laughable argument at best.
the comments that the doctors made when the women spoke about the health benefits of raw foods were very rude. "another vegetarian based diet" and "where's the cheeseburger?" --comments like this are contributing factors to why Americans go out and buy unhealthy foods and believe that they could eat whatever they want and just go get bypass surgery.
@truth2748 unfortunately because you are preaching and downgrading others instead of teaching doctors will remain that way. why dont you check your attitude
@itsmytime123 How am I downgrading others?, I'm simply stating a fact about American doctors and their limited nutritional information, which is common knowledge among those of us in the field. As far as preaching-telling the truth which is easily verifiable, is not the same as asserting ones own personal beliefs.
@truth2748 - Couldn't agree more! I used to watch this show but they are just as ignorant when it comes to nutrition as your average person. It's a sad thing.
Yeah umm.... I'm allergic to dairy and wheat, they feed cattle wheat in the winter time. Which is the reason i am a vegan. Honestly I'm not looking for help so please quit trying to give it, I was just making a comment on the original post to let people know that not everyone can do the raw food diet. I'm trying to get back to it like I said but until them I'm going to eat cooked foods.
I took Tegra's raw food preparation class and it was great! She is wonderful at putting foods together and it is so tasty. Love her. I missed her on the show and was glad to find it here on YouTube.
I don't care what the "truth" is, all I know is everytime you eat something whole, alive, and full of nutrients over the crap most people eat in this country, your doing yourself a huge favor. Nobody has all the answers, and if they say they do, they are full of shit! If you can't figure out that a bowl of blueberries is better for you, than a bowl of m&ms, then you have a bigger problems, than just health. Eat more veggies, and fruit, and you'll be better off. Peace everyone!
You should remember from biology class that NOT all proteins/enzymes are broken down by your stomach acid. For example, pepsin is secreted by your stomach to aid the digestion of proteins from your meal. It's optimum pH environment is about 2.0, which is VERY acidic. It's NOT broken down by your stomach acid. In fact, most of the enzymes are just temporarily inactive, but then are activated ( they attach to lymphocytes).
Furthermore, you should also know that fire was only discovered about 10,000 years ago. Most pople did not cook their foods at that time. Even a few thousand years ago, most people's caloric intake came from raw/fermented foods. No other animal cooks their food. Only humans do. It's a historical fact. We weren't born with ovens attached to us.
As a raw foodist, every time I hear the "enzyme" argument I cringe. Anyone who's taken an introductory biology class listens to that and laughs. I think we should keep things short and just say that it's like the placebo effect, we don't understand it but it works.
That's not true at all. I'm well-educated in the field of science and I disagree. Most people think that when you eat food it drops straight down to your stomach where your stomach acid breaks it down. What really happens is the food actually drops down to the cardiac section of your stomach ( the top part) where it pre-digests for about an hour, breaking down about 70-75% of your food. The food is predigested by the naturally occurring enzymes in the food & your saliva for about 40-60 minutes.
I was a raw foodist for 5 months recently, and I honestly became hypoglycemic it did heal a lot of my injuries and I am tempted to go back on the diet though as bad as it made me feel for two weeks, I dont know if I really want to.
If you felt bad in the beginning, it was likely a detox of "healing" reaction, which is actually a very good thing, you just have to drink lots of water & move thru it. It shows your body is going thru an intense cleansing process.
Maybe you needed to transition in to raw more slowly & be sure to balance your foods. Just try gradually adding more raw to your present diet. & see how it goes. Good luck!
ITS ALL IN YOUR MIND! if you think about fast food or junk food your body is gonna want it tis like a druggy that needs a fix if thats all he think about he is gonna have to have it
Ok heres the thing you don't get some people have what are called Allergies, you can also become allergic to foods if you eat them too much. I drank plenty of water and I was doing everything the way I should have. I developed OAS and couldnt eat a lot of foods also some days I starved because I didnt have time to make a salad. There are news articles where people have died from being raw foodists. If everything is in your mind then why change your diet? be careful what you say.
buttersworth: what did your diet consist of? when i was eating a lot of the gourmet raw foods, nuts, and dried fruit i felt terrible. i'm now doing better with a diet of mainly fresh fruit and greens. just my experience, though...curious to know your's.
Yeah I ran into the same problems (Lots of larabars... BAD!!!) and i started going towards teh Fresh Fruit and greens but man I started having huge problems with OAS and then I had to sleep a ton each day I was never hungry and I couldnt force myself to eat. On top of it all I was getting healthy but I just felt extremely sick and tired so I gave up on it.
Also I want to mention in no way am I saying the raw diet is bad for you! It worked extremely well for me I just ran into problems and I'm trying to get them figured out cause I had nasal surgery and tehres a hole in my septum and it started to heal. Also I had no Asthma no back pain, I lost lots of weight, I felt overall healthier I just became very lethargic and I couldnt deal with that since I'm a drummer.
@Headnheart1977 Funny you ask - I went through a huge bag of baby carrots/day phase - yes, I did not feel good. Anyway, what I've learned since my last post about diet and health: Not only do you need to take the crap out of your diet (refined foods, preservatives, hormones, etc.), you've gotta make sure you're getting all of your nutrients. Also, don't overeat.
@buttersworth13 The book "Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine" by Gabriel Cousens, M.D. says to stay away from high glycemic fruits and vegetables. That may have had something to do with your blood sugar issues while on the raw lifestyle.
Its just amzazing how it transformed my live when i started with raw food with superfoods like cacao, maca and goijberries. I feel just great all the time!..:)
