This video is awesome, I love your great description of all the first helicopters in the USA! I honestly don't know if I would be able to build that thing! Looked completely in pieces! Very nice job! And THUMBS UP!!!
lol, you should have a running counter for each time you put up "To the bench". Nice to see where we started out though. Thanks, keep up the great work
i remember wanting the original honey bee as a kid i used to imagine flying it next to me to the park.....so glad i never got one as i would not of stood a chance of flying it :)
everything is too easy nowdays, i loved building my tamiya rc cars and building my concept 30dx heli and well...pretty much built everything HA HA HA but thats half the fun, dont get me wrong RTF is great like my little MSR heli but so much more is learn't from building something yourself and you also take more care of the model too as it took many hours to build, i love this hobby!! :)
You are really a true inspiration and I wish you could have a holiday or something named after you. Anytime I have trouble flying I just watch ur videos.

Someone once told me all good engineers are also good historians, and this kind of thing is the proof. To really appreciate where we are today, you've just got to know this stuff. I'm a software engineer, and was lucky enough to be in on the computer revolution - this inspires me to pull out some old equipment and see if it still works - I bet it does :)
Dave Herbert you are a legend, thank you for sharing your vast amount of knowledge and experience through this video, I feel horned just leaving a message on your page.
Fantastic! Now to put brushless motors and a gyro on it to bring it up to date and fly it like it should be flown:) Unless you're gonna keep it in antique status.
Excellent source of wisdom and information on how much grief you guys went through in the early days. And to think I was whining about my $50 heli and how it won't trim up right!
when i was a kid my neighbor had a rc heli, i remember that thing always being on his work bench getting some kind of repair. think he only managed to fly it a few times it was hard to handle.. imagine he spent a lot of money on it too, pretty amazing you can get a ready to fly 7channel heli for a few 100 bucks now
Nice job sir! I remember you sending me a vid about your frustrations with the small Allen wrench last summer! Judging by the trees in the background, looks like this vid has been in the works for quite some time. "Back to the bench for adjustment..." :-) Thanks for your many contributions and accomplishments. They are all why you are so admired and respected.
Wow wow wow! Another incredible video sir! Just amazing the things you fellas went through to get us to where we are today! So, it must have been a pretty disheartening feeling to know that at 30 to 45 seconds of flight you were already half done huh? HAHA! Incredible sir. Thanks for sharing this build and your memories with us!
Man !! as i was watching this i cant help but to appreciate today rc helicopters.
My coaxial helicopter came out of the box and ready to fly in just a second ! no hassle no adjustment nothing was needed at all i had so much fun flying that heli.
Thanks Dave for showing us =)
P.S im going to vietnam soon =D any specific location u want me to take pics Dave
I just knew if anyone was going to get that baby to fly it would have to be the master of heli's (Dave Herbert) and that is why he is the master ;-) 5*
yep, I love this vid, I also experienced the 'going back to the bench again' sensation a couple of times LOL ! But I did never give up and learned from it , thx for this great vid Dave. 5 stars for sure.
COOOOOOL video Dave....as always. I got started in this hobby with cars in the mid '80s and they also came in pieces. I had to buy the radio and battery seperate....I don't complain to much with todays technology except for my landing gear on one of my helis......flimsy.....but otherwise I love the new technology.
OMG to fly a honey bee mk1 you had to be a REAL pilot that flew at Vietnam war...Like Mr Herbert! Thank Mr D.Herbert and the God(s) for the galloping technology advance!
Excellent video, wow! I'm so glad technology has advanced. I thought my blade 400 was hard to setup, lol. That was blast. I think almost all of your vids are great but this is brilliant and shows us (even more) what an expert you are.
That was great. I never realized your history went that far back with RC heli's and some of the companies around the world that used your inovations. Well done! I'm glad I latched on to YOUR videos to keep my learning curve in check and up to date.
Awesome vid! Best one yet in my opinion. Its awesome how you show the trials of RC helis back then. I remember driving a RC car (grasshopper) as a kid and hearing the stories of helicopter troubles in the local shop. I do, however, know there is always room for improvement but sure am glad we dont have to troubleshoot RC helis nowadays like whats shown here. Cheers Dave and Jeff. Great show.

awesome job Dave!!!! very well done!! it is awesome to see how the technologies had changed!!!! im amazed that there were some Helis without tailrotor!!!! Great Vid for knowledge.
WOW! You are a true veteran in this hobby, Sir! Good to see somebody that knows SO MUCH about Helos and Planes. We could learn a lot of your vids. Please keep them coming!
Such would kill my intrest in an instant. Definetly makes my Eskys seem whole lot advanced (and RTF for that price!) :) and no gyro, harsh ! Just once while having little trouble with my Belt I forgot to flip gyro on after adjusting... good thing I had training gear 'coz it went bananas.
ya that was way back in the day . my first was kayosho concept30 that was hard enough to figure got her off the ground one time for 10 sec. battery went dead. and it played weed whacker.payed 300 kit motor and hughs 500 body . sold it after repair for 1600 lol.thanks dave they are way easy now.
It's amazing to me how far e helis have come in just the last 35 years, just imagine what's in store for us in the next 35 years. Thanks to Dave and all the pioneers that through thier struggles and frustrations have helped made it easier and cheaper for us to enjoy this wonderful hobby. I'm so glad you got the old bird flying, Dave. Excellent job and a nostagic history lesson. I hope you had as much fun getting it operational as I had watching it.
hi, m from Malaysia.........your videos are simply superb educational values for those whom are into RC Hobby , i always have had good time listening on your advices on RC planes & have applied your techniques on my flying style...good work
Geez, no wonder a lot of ppl gave up back then, I would have ended up with it sittingback in the box. But if it hadn't been for guys like you with those old things, we would not have the pleasure now. They still aren't the easiest thing in the world to fly, but I've tried mine in Rate mode and it gets a whole lot harder. In fact, I lose my nerve after a few moments and land again. I want to learn though, in case my gyro ever fails me.
Dave once again you prove to your veiwers that this hobbie we all love wouldnt be where it is today without people like you to move it forward. Thank you.
I have to tell you all your videos are cool, but this one takes the cake. I love the great history lesson and didnt know how involved in the history that that you were!! pretty darn cool! one question, where did you get that mini electric screwdriver?? i want one..

Thanks for this video; may it serve as a reminder to those of us that flying helis is the whiped cream on top, but you've got to make the cake, lol!

Nice to see the Honey Bee flying. It was my first heli & I had the same problems getting it airborne.
Motors often burned out. Gear eccentricity made it hard to get good mesh.
Tiny screws were too easy to overtighten.
Radio gear/batteries were heavy, back then. No micro stuff.
My Honey Bee is in the garage, waiting for a day when I've got time to resurrect it with modern lightweight parts.
I raise my hat to you, for persevering. Modern designs owe a lot to pioneering models and modellers.

My hat's off to you, Dave. I know that I wouldn't have the patience to adjust the heli as many times as you did. All for a 2 minute flight... I am glad I started when I did! Thanks for this video; may it serve as a reminder to those of us that flying helis is the whiped cream on top, but you've got to make the cake, lol!

Wow, I don't think I would have had the patience for that. Great job putting that all together and flying it.
