I hate it. I dont want a "phone/tablet" interface forcefed - looks as if Win 7 might be as far as I go - a hard look at Linux is in order once Win 7 is too outdated to run anything. Even if you can "disable" the options - your still installing a lot of crap that has NO business being on a pc. Waste of space and system resources.
I'll only ever use a desktop PC. So I really don't see the need to upgrade to Windows 8, and since I've never used a tablet, or iphone, or whatever, I'll never get used to, or like that kind of interface.
I actually reather like the look of it, in my personal opinion I think it looks funkier and more modern and slick than Apple, which hasen't really changed too much over time and as such, looks dated.
I don't know how many times people with brains, like me, have to say this: the onlyl thing that's been replaced is the Start screen. That's it. The desktop is still there. All the Aero features are there. When you hit the Start button, you're taken to the Start screen. From there you can still search your entire computer like you've always been able to do. Does no one understand this. Windows 7 is still there. It's not that hard to comprehend.
@TheDesius you should realise that half of stuff doesn't work on linux, a true pro would have both running. Dumb people are people who can't even spell the word.
@TheDesius don't pretend that everything is compatible with linux and wine cos as you well know it isn't and for me to put a list of incompatible programs on this thread would take me all day. I think you're right you are dislection.
Microsoft: "How can we make more money? Oh...we can take win7, put some shit in it so that looks like a new os, sell business edition for 500. The shitty windows phone-touch screen look will be perfect for businesses. And that's how we make money in microsoft!"
Looks great etc, but there leaving the keyboard and mouse behind eventually. I'm a gamer, so for me this makes me sad. Obviously thats where the future is everything is gonna be touch screen. I'm staying on Win7

@Jarhead1407 Oh I'm sorry I didn't realise that you were so brainy, so basically in your ultimate knowledge what your saying is that it's windows 7 with a desktop add on, quick let me run and get my 150 pounds for a copy. Dumbass that's like saying windows vista was the same as xp with a ui change, don't be such a tard. Also when your using the aero desktop as a selling point and everyones telling you it SUCKS, whats the point in using it for marketing answer me that BRAIN BOY
@Jaya365 No, I'm saying they took what is amazing about Win7 (which, let's be honest, is about 90% of it), optimized it for tablet use, while mainting the productive desktop-esque Windows we all know and love. There's a huge difference between XP and Vista, but for me to explain that it would require you having a deep knowledge of computers. Why do you think everyone loved XP and hated Vista? Sure as hell wouldn't because of the UI change (most people agree Vista is prettier).
@Jarhead1407 People hated Vista because MS made a mistake with their security protocols - they did it wrong - answering 3-5 dialog boxes with passwords to move a folder was a bit frustrating for lack of a better word. It wasn't interface. Windows 7 cleaned that up - a clear step in the right direction. This Win 8 version is clearly an over-zealous attempt to get as many tablets phones and PCs under one OS umbrella - this will fail and everyone will hear the thud.
not too bad , I use XP Pro though , I have Win 7 & Vista and they even have 2 or 3 gigs of ram , but they hog it all up , I have 800 PC's with a Gig or under in ram - so Using XP Pro meets all my needs :) QC
Omg what a load of shit. Metro is awful I hate it I hate the windows phone look it's awful. Microsoft seriously suck hard at the moment. The desktop pc is slowly going to die with this shit which is designed for tablets.
@Jaya365 I don't know how many times people with brains, like me, have to say this: the onlyl thing that's been replaced is the Start screen. That's it. The desktop is still there. All the Aero features are there. When you hit the Start button, you're taken to the Start screen. From there you can still search your entire computer like you've always been able to do. Does no one understand this. Windows 7 is still there. It's not that hard to comprehend.
The negative comments here are laughable. Microsoft will have the good 'ol start menu in the final release. And, I think people are going to like Metro. You just don't like it now because you're thinking about running it on your current hardware. I think 90% of laptops are going to have touchscreens in the next 5 years. Toshiba released a model like this a few years ago but it did not sell well because Windows 7 is not touch friendly. This will change with Windows 8.
@piratesmvp Guys, let's face the truth about touch screens. Touch screens are not suitable for hands if the screen is vertical, either it's a desktop or a laptop. You get easily tired, and you can not work, not saying that you will catch tenontitis soon. Touch screens are suitable only on horizontal surfaces, aka the laptops have to turn to slim tablets, and desktop screens to turn horizontal really "desktop" even with an angle. Then, one should have the screen on his desk, or on his knees.
@hrbear Well, if you plan to use the touchscreen for 90% of your input, then, yeah, a vertical orientation is not the best setup. But, there are sometimes situations where I wish I could just tap something on my laptop screen. Or, in class, if I'm taking notes in OneNote and then my instructor decides to start drawing something on the whiteboard, I want to be able to pull out my stylus to input the drawing next to my typed text. I think touch with kinect will be key in next generation computing
@piratesmvp Well, 2 cases I saw and I liked were in the last James Bond movie, if you remember the scene where the bad guys were computing something on a touch desktop, or the Avatar movie computers. I would like an electronic pencil also, to work on an horizontal touch. As touch screens are not suitable for data entry, either an additional keyboard should be there, and the voice recognition should be far better. But this for the future. Windows should be replaced by more sophisticated system :)
If there is no option to turn off that tile bullshit, I will never buy W8. I don't understand, they went from XP (awesome) to Vista (horrible) to W7 (awesome) to W8 (looking horrible so far). At least this is a pre-beta, so they haven't crushed my hopes yet, but if it stays with this annoying Apple-style toddler interface, they'll lose a lot of customers. I guess I'll just ignore everything from MS until W9 is shown.
@0oDarkLordRevano0 Windows 8 is amazing!!!... one thing bad about it... i hate the start button! black backround... ps you can change the wall paper to transparent too...
Everyone seems to hate windows 8 as i did until i installed it and actually used it....It's great it's simple faster and works i don't see why people just automatically hate something because it looks different.
windows 8 is good for tablets and other mobile touch devices but for a pc this is a fail. Microsoft seems to be trying to merge mobile and pc into one and the result is going to be ugly. this is gonna be windows vista all over again.
I thought the redesign of the task bar was good in Win7, so why is "metro" needed when all the apps I use are right on the task bar? They should have put search on the taskbar itself.
Wow, the start menu looks REALLY clunky. Sure, it looks nice, but it doesn't seem very functional.
What I really loved about Windows 7 was that all I had to do to start a program was click the start bar, type in the name of the program and hit enter. There was no need to scroll through a menu or clutter the desktop icons. It's fast and efficient.
With Windows 8, it looks like I'm either going to have to make a bunch of ugly icons or take the time to fish through the odd start menu.
Why do people make such a big deal about the desktop UI, and OS UI? Do you just spend all your time staring at the desktop or navigating through your folders? No, you use the desktop for like 2 seconds and then you open a program, which looks the same no matter what version of windows you have...
People don't like change. Change is what Windows is going for here, and even though it's pretty much what everyone needs and it's very intuitive, people still won't like it because they've become accustomed to Windows 7. They're going to say that this is shit when it's actually really not horrible at all. People just don't like change.
majority of people dont even buy that touch screen shit when buying a computer. Tell me how old people are going to find this easy? and whats with every company trying to force 3D vision in our lives? Plus its ugly as fuck!
I'm loving the new look and feel. However I have a question that maybe you could answer, how can you make your mouse permanently stay on the screen? I have a touchscreen computer if it matters, but, when I move my mouse around, the cursor only shows when there's a link or piece of text. I'd like for it to always appear, it stays permanently there for a short period sometimes, however when I click OK in the change mouse settings section.
This is suppose to be a desktop/laptop os not a mobile/tablet os. It looks and feels (I have the developer preview as well) like windows phone 7 with a dumbed down version of windows 7 behind it. I really thing that Microsoft is having trouble combining there mobile interface and Desktop interfaces. They even hav destroyed their trademarked start button ;-( . I just can't see someone actually using this on a desktop computer. It looks like it should be for tablets.
Metro Style Interface looks a lot like one of Rainmeter's designs. Not a very intuitive interface in my opinion. Much prefer just the basic "home" background.
Ewww not looking forward to this at all il probably wait and get windows 9 when it comes out the only reason i would get this is if u could turn off tiled mode
I don't mind the metro style as long as there is an ability to disable it. Not many people have touchscreen monitors. The good old mouse is still practical to me.
The new start interface looks to much like a tablet interface and not a desktop. I hope that in the full version you are still able to use the windows 7 start interface.
looks like windows 7 with metro ui overlay

@AngryRantingNerd Yup. They are afraid of change. Plus, they are not FORCED to change to this. So really they're just being hysterical.

@BlackRaven117 ROFL. We all want to believe that.. But sadly... It's not true. It is in fact for the desktop

Sucks, should have keep Win7 design just used Win8 improvements. Metro works for the phone, not not for PC or Notebook. Might work in a NetBook.

@rivengle i saw that dumbass i was talking about instaed of the metro tile stuff if it can be changed to a classic start menu like in windows 7

Metro Style Interface looks a lot like one of Rainmeter's designs. Not a very intuitive interface in my opinion. Much prefer just the basic "home" background.

@EnduranceforceX Omnimo which is the Rainmeter design you are commenting BASED it's design on the Metro UI not the other way around..

I don't care about a new start menu. I never use it since i discovered toolbars for the taskbar. All my icons go!

Windows 8 is/will be a piece of crap. That's what I think. When Vista came out I held on to XP. I upgraded straight to 7.
Same thing here. I'll stick with 7 until something good comes along.

Ewww not looking forward to this at all il probably wait and get windows 9 when it comes out the only reason i would get this is if u could turn off tiled mode

I dont like the new metro style.... O and do you guys know where the shutdown button is? UNDER CONTROL PANEL! WTF!! D:
wouspe 5 months ago
I don't mind the metro style as long as there is an ability to disable it. Not many people have touchscreen monitors. The good old mouse is still practical to me.

The new start interface looks to much like a tablet interface and not a desktop. I hope that in the full version you are still able to use the windows 7 start interface.
NZPCtechGUY 5 months ago
@NZPCtechGUY
I know. If you play some of the preinstalled games it says to do things like swipe left or right which is lingo for a touch interface on a tablet.
