@mainchow10 that is just one part of the storm you are seeing... it was overhead and behind us... i was headed southeast along rt. 460 and it was moving in the same general direction.. you just cant see the rest because it was so big...
@mainchow10 well, i sort of thought i answered that... i was shooting out of the window while driving trying to get out ahead of the storm... i was not going right, away from the storm, i just appeared that way.. hope that helps..
I used to live in Elizabeth City in NC, luckily we moved to Kodiak, Alaska in May 2007, so we missed this one! I hate thunderstorms. Kodiak is almost entirely thunderstorm free (with one exception, I've only heard one boom of lightning in my time here), just has lots of wind and rain and snow in the winter.
the worst storm i expirenced was on mothers day of 2008 when a ef3 tornado formed on the bypass in elizabeth city, nc. the sky was green and a plane crashed rite in front of my house. it was very scary. my house got destroyed due to the tornado. the winds were estimated at 135mph. there was hail th size of tennis balls.
@stormchaser543 did the title say "this is the worst storm in history?" no. it isn't some damn contest who has seen the bigger storm. he simply put it up for everyone to view.
@mawnez1 The only storm that was the most sever was the may 9th 1999 (i think its that date) that tornado was an EF 5 and the winds were recored in at 318 mph
Ooooooh, thunderstorms are my life. Too bad that here is nothing to chase. Supercells in Czech republic are maybe 1 to a year. But this one season was extremely better. One HP supercell and few CS supercells. I have only the HP in a stadium of break up. Too bad, but still a wind of 100 km/h and large lightning activity was seen. Good luck with T-Storms vacanechaser ;)
nope. no tornado.. there was a warning for one, but I would have been in the best place to see it. Just heavy rain and strong winds. Thanx for looking
that is my radar, barons mobile threat net for the laptop... that lets you know when you are approaching a strong storm, or a twisting storm meaning it has roataion... like rotation that could be a tornado... thanx for looking
My family reunion is held on the Outer Banks of NC every few years; some pretty wicked storms hit us almost every time! This was no different, apparently.
On the radar shot at the beginning; just outside the outer of the 2 radar circles at the 7 o'clock mark there looks to be a bow echo. Is that the same phenomenon you were filming at about 4:35?
no.. that was earlier in the day in north carolina... the large gustfront was later, hours later,in the day and in virginia... the large gustfront line of storms was not even on radar yet...
Amazing structure! Did you come near the Outer Banks by any chance?
