@Balendula Well, remember, it's not supposed to be Celes, it's supposed to be Maria. We don't really know much about Maria except that she's waiting for her love to return to her from war. That doesn't sound too vulnerable to me. (And I'm not trying to be rude, or anything like that, but I'm sorry if it comes across that way)
3:53 that picture with Locke makes him look a LOT like Claude from Star Ocean EX with different colours. yes i realise that the anime is based off Star Ocean 2.
I've got a mp3 of this opera performed live by an orchestra in japan and sung by Italian operatists that's like 23 minutes and some change... it's amazig.
The game was awesome, the music perfect and the story simply excellent, presenting the one villian that COULD destroy the world, a remake is on the wish list, 3DS ftw
what was with all the effeminate male lead characters after ff7!? they should have just made them women, like in ff13. That was cool. but weird looking michael jackson monkey man and "I'm emotional" guy with the stupid one leg longer than the other shorts, I didn't like them. Kind of turned me off the whole FF experience...I miss 6 and 7.
@SleepingDogification Another valid question is. What's with all the mainly unimportant and spectator-type main characters?
Tidus from FF10 for exemple isn't the lead of the epic story. Yuna is, as she is the one who saves the world and everyone else is just... following her to protect her. Tidus is only going because he's got the hots for her, to get back to Zanarkand and some blitzball.
And Vaan is in the same spot as well. Actually, you can completely omit him without change to the story...
Y'know, for all the hating that gets done on FF7, I've gotta say that.....I can't say any one game is better than the others. Each time I finish one, even on replays I sit back, take a deep breath and feel like that was the best one. Each one, in their own way can qualify as the best one. I first realized this when I finished FF12, thought of it as the best one....and then promptly slapped the bejeezus out of myself.
@pillowpants1984 They are all differing experiences. No one Final Fantasy is truly the same as the other, and they should theoretically be considered individual stories. Liking one better then another is similar to saying you prefer the red riding hood over snow white. The only link is that both are fairy tales. Just as both FF6, 7, 12 are Final Fantasies.
There's barely anything holding it "as a series". Each could have their own individual titles and it would change nothing.
@Kujakuseki01 I save that title/ranking for Dancing Mad, personally. A four-part epic 16-18 minute song that received a critical analysis that could count as a thesis and argument as to the validity of artistic merit in gaming through not only it's musical capability but the fact that the music's theme and ideas are interconnected to the experiences and story that drives the entire game forward...
It's a great read, the focused analysis of Dancing Mad (Google: Dancing Mad Critical Analysis)
actually, aria may by italian for air, but in this case it probably means wikipedia's definition of 'a self-contained piece for one voice usually with orchestral accompaniment.'. It is in fact in English usually just called an aria anyway, so 'Aria di mezzo caraterre' is probably supposed to simply mean 'Aria of half character', and I can see where that name would come from, as Celes is supposed to be posing as Maria, thus she is half of the character.
@deltron121 Well, "mezzo" means half in Italian, but in this case, I'm almost positive that is referring to "mezzo-soprano". :D When this song is performed live, a mezzo soprano opera singer always performs the part. (And I'm an operatic singer - a mezzo soprano, even - myself!)
Oh I didn't know about Mezzo being Sporano - but I did know the singer is soprano. That's cool (that you are an operatic singer and soprano - don't have the voice for this kind of vocal credibility though).
I'll be polite, but honest; Some things just don't translate well into english. The original live Italian version from Grand Finale has a permanent spot on my playlist. Even the live Japanese versions sound good. In English.... it just doesn't sound right. Kudos for at least attempting it though, I'd always wondered how it would sound.
i have faith that 1 day someone will come along and make a rpg as epic as this. maybe some1 will say graphics r great but it's all about the characters?? is tht 2 much 2 ask
This is a great song and it's a great game. I'm amazed at the graphical detail every time i play through even though they're quite outdated. That outdated graphics is part of what makes the game so great though. Part with the mine cart was just godlike to make that affect.
This has always been my favorite part in the opera and I have always actually sung it to my self as it was being played out in the game but to hear how good it sounds with an actual orchestra it is so much better!
Very cool...the ONLY thing that could make this better would be footage from the ACTUALL Opera, replicating what happens in the game right down to Sezter comming down & abducting Celes!!
Then why did you a) click on it and b) post a rude comment when you knew everyone else here was more than likely a fan of the song? It's labeled clearly enough so that even morons such as yourself can tell what it is. Don't like it? Don't click on it! Problem solved. Go commit suicide, please.
Um, when you have a perfect arraignment and a disciplined orchestra that can play it perfectly, why would you a)cut the actual Aria in half, and b) cut it off and have it fade RIGHT AS IT WAS GOING TO GET TO THE VERY BEST PART OF THE WHOLE DAMN SCORE GOD DAMMIT. They were so frelling close, all they had to do was put in 20 more seconds of the original length and I would have been in bliss. Instead they rip me out of it just before. Argh.
Yes 3,7,8 are so amazing I cant decide which I love more! then things like Crisis core really added to to the thick story line of 7 10 had its moments too.
@timfortune9 I agree with best scene and best music, but not with best game of the series. I'm glad that they finally got the major kinks out of gameplay for this one, but overall, 9 was one of my favorite ones to play.
5,6,7,8,9,10,and soon to be 13 are all my favorite final fantasys.I like them all equally, and not one of them is overrated. They all get the respect they deserve.
He's one of the best composers of modern times, alongside Michael Giacchino, I'd say. Definately the best of the Japanese video game composers generation.

Yeah, the game wasn't overrated, what was done with it was. WAY too much stuff out of just one game. I bet with the production money from all those spin-offs they could've done two movies! =)
If Squeenix remade this game, they would make Locke a whiny, loser emo, Edgar a flamboyant metrosexual, Terra even MORE moody, Celes into a kooky psycho a la Selphie and Rikku, etc etc etc

Still..... a remake.. would be freakin awesome!! =P
@Nronnbdc17 Let's be fair. It isn't exactly FF7 that ruined it all. Final Fantasy 7 is, despite all the overhype about it, a good to great game. It's memorable for the most part, it has it's wonderful moments, it's mixture of tragedy and comedy and scale of importance.
The TROUBLE is that we had a great flow of newcomers who began to herald it, devoid of any proper RPG knowledge. Try asking them what is BoF, Suikoden, Wild Arms, Grandia, SaGa, Tales, Dragon Quest, Mana, Atelier, SMT, Persona...
@Testsubject909 No, no, I was talking about how FF7 got all the added plots to it's story--no doubt, it was great, but how it's known to be the "best" isn't entirely true. It's hard to honestly say what Final Fantasy is the best. In my personal opinion, I wanted those Final Fantasies remade on other consoles, to revisit the wonderful memories
@OceanAnimus that is the one and only thing that would ever make me buy a PS3. If they remade this game with modern graphics and kept it true to the original I would, for the first time in a long time, have a reason to play an RPG consol game again.
Fantastic orchestration of a fantastic song. I just wish they had kept the original harp instead of replacing it with piano chords. But the CD is so hard to find! It's on the More Friends - Music from Final Fantasy disc.
btw, the opera is called The Dream Oath. Aria de Mezzo Carattere is the second movement of the opera (starts at 4:33)
It's a beautiful song and I like your slideshow. I wish they had gone with a higher pitched, sweeter voice for Maria/Celes though.. I guess it's supposed to be an Italian Opera, but it just doesn't feel like those synthesized vocals I loved.
@SageGeminiThe that always confused me with VI, the sprites are WAY different than the Amano designs, I would of prefered to see the Firion styled Locke over the lame headband one, that bandana in the profile pic was pretty awesome.
@Zellig would help if they didn't mess about putting Tifa in Duodecim when they could've had anyone else... not that i'm bitter or anything they didn't choose Celes who was way more useful than Tifa.
It used to have a ton of comments, but my old account was deleted. It's just been recently reposted. Thanks for your support! Link your friends and rate it if you don't mind; some jerk went through all of my videos and one-starred them.

So what's celes really supposed to look like? The amano art style is so much different than her battle sprite. I am confused ;.;
Zellig 2 years ago
Well, they're both valid versions, but she's supposed to look like the Amano design. They just couldn't sprite her that way.

At least the Amano design wears pants instead of her spirte's "Battle Swimsuit"...

well ye but i think she still looked better, and more like a General, with her cape.....really wish theyd kept it........

Capes ain't all that, remember "The Incredibles"?

@SageGeminiThe that always confused me with VI, the sprites are WAY different than the Amano designs, I would of prefered to see the Firion styled Locke over the lame headband one, that bandana in the profile pic was pretty awesome.

@Zellig they were given free reign over sprite design

@Zellig I like to think of her looking like Lightning from FF13, but without the gunblade.
