Actually, in berserk mode and front row, Cecil died before the wall, and in FF4, the programming is set that if all other party members are dead but you are in the front row, you get no damage loss but still get the defense boost.

Nope, when Cecil is alone he gets the same damage in both front and back row.
But his defense is STILL upped in the back row.
