Gordon Bennett... Here's the deal - James is an astonishing guitarist no matter what you might think of MSP, one of the very few who can play complex lead runs and tight rhythmical chops *while singing*. Johnny Marr is also an astonishing guitarist because he comes up with rhythm parts which a lot of self-titled "lead guitarists" can't play without a lot of practice. Vai's a shredder, and a good one (possibly one of the best) - but that stuff leaves me a bit cold.
It doesn't matter you can manage to play this song or not....fact is you weren't the one who wrote it so don't say you are better than JDB because he must have written 100's of songs.....Ya know...... he has fucking written songs but most of us are just "inspired" to pick up a guitar to play without writing music. I am also a motherless fuck!
@warriorprince1010 JDB is a very good singer. But I think JM done a little more than just play a few chords; I mean you only have to listen to a track like "Oscillate Wildly" to understand what I mean; or even just the strings on "There Is a Light...", as synthesized as they may be :)
But hey, you like The Smiths and Radiohead, I definitely agree with your taste in music.
@MelPullThePin tbh, I think JDB is the better guitarist, if you listen to his chord progressions on songs like The Everlasting, If you Tolerate this and It's not War, as well as the initial stuff of the Holy Bible, and his solo's on songs like motorcycle emptiness you will recognise his talent as a guitarst. Also i'm sure you'll agree his singing is almost unrivaled
I feel very proud of myself that I can play something the JDB himself struggles with! To be fair, some Manics guitar solos are more difficult than any Smiths songs, but it's very tricky to get the right "feel" when playing a Smiths song. Even if you hit every note perfectly it still somehow doesn't sound as good as when Johnny plays it.
@theeuphioquestion Yeah, he's only written some of the best guitar work of all time, influenced people to pick up a guitar and/or use a white Les paul custom (like Justin Hawkins) , has won Brit awards for his music and been in all the top guitar mags....... but you, a muppet on Youtube thinks you're better. Both Marr and JDB are amazing in their own ways and VERY VERY different styles.
@ManicStreetKillers I used to love the Manics (mostly Richie) but JDB is no way near Marr in terms of talent and creativity with a guitar. There are plenty of guitarists like him, who have similar tones and styles. There are none like Marr. His playing is completely timeless, which unfortunately, can't be said for 95% of the guitarists out there.
JM is simply one of a kind. Plenty have tried to emulate; most have failed, remarkably.
@adds3566 well sure he can now, but it seems to me that he's referring back to when he wasn't so advanced on the guitar. like probably around when this song came out.
@adds3566 I really like how hes showing respect to johnny, specially since i mean, he is steve vai. two great guitar players who have their own unique style and sound.
The thing that makes this funny is that you can see James is really trying to get it right, yet fails every time. Then Johnny plays it without breaking a sweat and makes it see effortless.
@PantheonLincoln Well of course he does you tool, its HIS song, he WROTE it and has probably played it a million times. It would be like asking Marr to play the crazy solo on Love's sweet exile or Stay beautiful, expecting he could do it better or anywhere near as good as James Dean Bradfield. JDB probably played hasn't played it since a kid in his bedroom before they got famous. Happens to all guitarists, we forget things we haven't refreshed. There's brain memory and finger memory!!!!
@04adamski Thats the same Oasis who basically made a rehash of the Stone Roses first album for their own? The same manics who were formed in the late 1980s and had 3 albums out before Definately Maybe? The manics are nothing like Oasis, none of their 10 albums have anything remotely like the growl of Liam Gallagher...
@riw1989 Eh? Definitely Maybe and The Stone Roses sound completely different - one is influenced (or, in some songs, pure copies) of T-Rex, the Sex Pistols and Stones - it's rock and roll and really heavy (with two guitarists) and a plodding, steady beat. The Roses fused dance and funky sixties melodies like the Byrds. The two albums really are completely different and I've never heard them compared. It's true that Liam ripped off Brown's stage walk and Noel loved the Roses though.
I can play it, and I can tell you that it is an absolute nightmare of a riff to play. If you listen to Johnny Marr playing it, even he fucks it up about a barr in in this video. Its that hard. Whatever you think about JDB songwriting, he is a very skilled guitarist, and I totally identify with him fucking it up and having to explain that "I do this all the time, and now I can't remember it". Next I fuck it up, I'm just going to scream "Ah you motherless fuck". :D
@Andyvswild it was on iPlayer at the time I posted as the series had just aired on the BBC. It will probably have been taken down long ago. Internet searching is your friend, somebody will have ripped and uploaded it somewhere - I'm in a rock and roll band - the guitarist (i think)
