  • Games are art. This genius is an idiot to believe it otherwise.

  • system seller

  • i don't want a PS3 as i don't like them but i want to play MGS4 but if it goes on xbox it will be ruined AAAAAH

  • he truly is a genius, enough said

  • @dkc4475 I don't give a fuck about your opinion. If movies are considered as art, so can be epic games. And what about those douchebags that chain and starve dogs in museums, or corpse galleries? Everything can be considered as art these days.

  • Sorry Kojima-San, but i don't agree with you on this one. Your games ARE art and will always be considered as art.

  • Greatest game in all consoles

  • The game its self alone, is not art. Adding soul, hard work, gameplay, and story line, makes this game art. And in the future it will still be art, maybe not the same kind as it is now, more like Andy Warhol pop culture art, but no matter what i dont think this game will ever fade, as long as human civilization stands. Plus history repeats its self, and this game holds some strong morals.

  • metal gear solid to me is like the lord of the rings of games just so epic and well made.

  • This was sooo good. I played all the previous ones before this and there's never been an ending more satisfying to a series than in MGS4. When it began I didn't want it to end, but when it ended I didn't feel like it left me feeling empty, more that it ended right on time. Sooo epic.

  • ...So...This is the man behind the Gem of gaming that is MGS...Im starting to love the Japanese. first the playstations then MGS and not to forget to mention that other thing.

  • dude im jus gonna say that the metal gear series is among the best video game sagas ever created, but im sure you all knew that.

  • wayyy too long cutscenes

  • what was the name of his favourite artist. i dont know ho wit is spelt

  • screw automatic cars lol

  • Art? Hello Kojima, if it wasen't for the concept artist your characters would never have been brought to life and would never of had such great looks. But we all know what you mean that art is not a big thing in video gaming but at the same time it has a big role in it.

  • @futureanimatior LMFAO. He is not talking about the literal art, dude. I think that's what you're talking about. By the way, I agree with. I love me my video games, but I don't consider them art. MGS has great Art DIRECTION, but that's a different topic all together.

  • @MyLittleHero95 Lol oh my bad seriously I feel stupid now I thouhgt he meant the other art lmfao

  • i like big boss better that mg game was cool

  • I think most people are missing Kojima's point. He is getting at that video games aren't very good examples of "art" because there is not really an "artist" figure at the center of them. Even Kojima himself, as the director, seems to be more concerned with giving the players what they want, rather than expressing something as best he can.

  • @sethisawesome If anything he did the exact opposite of that. He made a four hour game with roughly seven hours worth of cutscenes/codec calls, most of which were packed full of anti war propaganda.

To me he seems to be more concerned with expressing his opinions on war than he is with giving the players what they want.

  • @l3awl3ag dude what do you seriously want from the video game industry??? a game that has a weak plot if any,and that mainly consists of just shooting and absolutely no dialog, because that pretty much summarizes the video game industry today, for the exception of a few decent games, i bet if you had to choose you would have made the worst game ever created and everyone would have hated you for it, so why don't leave the job to the professionals and shut up, before you look like an ass.

  • @thedeathdealer97 The main focus of a video game should be the gameplay. That doesn't mean that they can't have good stories, there are plenty of games with good stories out there (like MGS 1, 2 and 3 lol), but when the "game" is 75% cutscenes a line has to be drawn. Or is that what you want from the video game industry?

  • @thedeathdealer97 Oh and for the love of god, don't call Kojima a professional. He's an arrogant little fuck. Just look at MGS4. How can you possibly play that game and NOT feel patronised? It's main theme is that war is bad, and that video games are bad for making war look fun (as if we didn't already know). And how does Kojima get that point across? Oh of course.. By putting it in a video game where you fight a war. That's not artful or even clever. That's just being a condescending cunt.

  • @l3awl3ag if you are so fucking smart, then what are YOUR SUGGESTIONS.

  • @thedeathdealer97 He needs to focus more on making a good game. He's clearly capable of it, but he's more interested in making a point about war. It wouldn't annoy me half as much if he actually went about it in a respectful manner. But since he chooses to communicate his point to us as if we are children, I'm not exactly inclined to listen to him. Or even take him seriously for that matter.

  • @l3awl3ag the point he is trying to make is that we must pay for the choices we make. Sometimes war is the only option but because we are all human we we suffer for having to make that choice. He tries to bring humanity into video games and obviously people have made that connection. to bad you havent.

  • @Robidub I get what he's trying to do, but he doesn't do it well in MGS4. I'm playing through it again now, and I have appreciated it a lot more this time. But still, the scene with Big Momma where she's talking about the resistance soldiers has been cringeworthy EVERY time. Who needed to hear that? Certainly not you or me. Snake? Not likely. Nobody gives a shit about any of that. If someone wants to go to war because they like military videogames.. Who cares? Let them die.

  • @l3awl3ag I'll make it more simple: that Resistance part didn't suit your tastes. That's all:)

  • @WorldOfSnakes Sorry I did rant a bit lol, the contradiction just annoys me. Mainly because Kojima must have put it there knowingly, which does seem arrogant to me.

But anyway.. I played through the game again last week, and I enjoyed it. I just had to put up with that one little section in act 3 that I hate, and then it was back to the good stuff lol.

  • @l3awl3ag I'll tell you what I didn't like about the game...remember on the ship in the end, when Otacon opens his laptop and we see and APPLE on it? Or when Naomi picks up her cell phone and it's a NOKIA? This really bugged me...

  • @WorldOfSnakes Yeah the product placement in MGS4 was insane. There was random Apple stuff lying around everywhere. Snake even had an i-Pod in his inventory lol. It was a bit of a weird decision given that the game was made exclusively for the PS3. You'd think Sony would have had something to say about it, given that most of the advertisements were for rival companies lol. Microsoft certainly wouldn't have stood for it.

  • @Robidub The problem I have with that topic being discussed in the game doesn't stop at me believing that the fan base is above it either. It's almoast completely unrelated to the game's storyline. It's not like the in-depth discussions about genetics, they actually play a massive part in fleshing out the overarching storyline. Whereas this whole "war games trick the naive" theme is just an excuse for Kojima to wax poetic.

  • @l3awl3ag Man reading through your comments, someone would think you're crazy lol. You analyze Kojima and his games in such a paranoid way that doesn't even represent anything real. If you're really intelligent you'll take the time to reflect on the fact that how you interpret things isn't necessarily how things are in reality...I'll leave you with that :)

  • @thedeathdealer97 Are you honestly telling me that MGS4 WOULDN'T be a better game had he tilted his focus towards the gameplay a little more? If he'd reined in his bullshit a little, and used that extra time to flesh out the levels a bit more?

It's not that complicated. Look at the first three Splinter Cell games. They had barely any cutscenes, yet they managed to tell a fairly complex story and introduce one of gaming's better characters. MGS needs cutscenes, but not on an MGS4 level.

  • Heh art?

If I take a crap on a painting it will be better art than the shit he produced.

  • I'm confused. Is a banana the same as an apple or not?

  • Thank you for creative metal gear solid .

  • Hideo is a black haired, more asian Otacon xD

  • Hideo Kojima YOU are ART <3

  • The Da Vinci of the video game world! We love you Hideo!

  • No, no, no, Snake your doing it all wrong, you gotta point up, to ensure a painless/instantaneous death, everyone knows that, geez. Lol im just fuckin around

  • i feel sorry for kojima, his son wont take over his bussiness, or his title as his son doesnt like MGS

  • *bows* Thank you Kojima San

  • Every time and then , Kojima sits the ideal standers and provide tons of thoughts and inspirations for game makers..thats why he is The Boss !

  • marry me Hideo !

    let's make little snakes together.

  • @jlmood2007

Wish you good luck, and happy marriage.

May the first born snake be a boy :D

  • cont'

The skilled artist utilizes these mental "blindspots" by conveying something that is different, and profound (aka "pretty"). These blindspots exist within all forms of visuals such as art (obviously), and video games as well, and even in music. Video games just heightens the interactivity. Art, even traditional art, is an interactive exercise between itself and the audience

...so Kojima, as much as i respect you, you're wrong...

  • real art is conveying an emotional response from an audience. This "reaction" would be difficult if not impossible if done in any other median besides visual imagery.

Vision is a tricky thing since, we as humans cannot truly percieve the world as it is in reality. The mind cannot possibly process all of the visual information that it is feed (at least not in 100% focus) thus the mind fills in the blanks.

  • his point about games not being art because they are user friendly is stupid. just because the game is playable he says its not art. isnt the real art in games the experience they bring? the emotions they evoke in you? his games have this effect much more than many games.

  • pfft, splinter cell is a lot better. sam fisher would kick that old man's ass easily. solid snake is a weak character

  • @JimmyRidz you are in the minority of the people who think this. just look at the reviews, mgs4 got many many 10's, the newest splinter cell got at highest a 9.0

  • @JimmyRidz exuse me retard, but from what i recall, without metal gear solid, their wouldnt be SUCH A FUCKING DAM THING AS SPLINTER CELL BIOTCH

  • @JimmyRidz HAH weak char, hes old cause hes a clone and ages three times faster, sam fisher is a 50 year old twat of a man, "where my daughter Grim?" wait that sounds familiar, "WHERES MARIA MARCUS, WHERES MARIA" GOW another shit game like splinter cell

  • @CameronKerrShaw Solid snake ages because of the foxhound i think. Also who told you that clones age 3 times faster?:D

  • @topografer sorry i meant foxdie

  • Wow... I didn't think the writer of the BEST VIDEO GAMES EVER is so humble.

  • ...........

  • roger you're a moron kojima is one of the best game developers we will see in this century enjoy 360 you stupid fuck

  • Dude, no coments really. You're that envious of Kojima...

  • @rogermurd

Lol....we all know you didn't get the story. Don't bash the writer for your inability to comprehend it =/

  • hahahahah.... right.

  • I disagree with hideo about the idea behind art. I do agree with the whole "apple" thing, but I think people can get clever with games and the fact that it's interactive opens alot of doors to expand the idea and make it become something thats impossible to recreate on a drawing board or film strip

  • i think he would agree with you but lets take basketball for example....basketball itself is not art, but the many components within the process can be artistic. such as the stroke of your jumpshot.

martial arts isnt art, but the techniques developed through adaptation and experimentation can be very artful.

its more about process than final product.

a painting isnt art unless the method and/or emotion is artful, like chess. its deeper than moving pieces on a board.

  • kojima is the truth...my fav video game series is indeed the Metal Gear Solid series.

  • @spadesTPC

yup! i love how he hides references to real world Geopolitics in his games. alot of what he puts into MGS games comes true in the real world. ever notice that?

    MGS1 - nukes and WMD's

MGS2 - Global controll of information and the NWO/Illuminati/Shadow government control

MGS4 - PMC, privatized war and Global government.

    Kojima knows!

  • and

    MGS3 - fear in the 60's

  • @jdpegg

    true true, cold war hysteria.

  • fear betrayel verge of nuclear war also

  • For once... Kojima is wrong. Art is something with emotion and something that makes you think. Whether you think about life, your values, etc. Whatever it is, if it's made you consider something, it's art. Books are art. Then so are video games. Above all, Metal Gear is art.

  • I'd say art is when you use something to tell other's a message, much like Kojima does. He built up his franchise MGS because it looks appealing to people, the story is interesting, the characters are interesting but that is not important. Kojima puts messages into his games but who would listen to his messages? He makes those games to get fans, who then listen to him. Too bad most fans ignore those messages, this is my definition of art.

  • his intelligence is such high, the interpreter is perplexed.

  • for me ITS MUCH MORE MASTERPEACE this game i will never forget NEVER !

  • what makes Hideo Kojima such a good game maker is his love of Film.. meaning his games aren't mindless like alot of games out there.

  • MGS4 was a masterpiece.

  • "was a masterpiece" ? IS A MASTERPIECE!

  • indeed, my bad.

  • Lol

  • hideo kojima=mastermind man i wish i had that title

  • This is the one thing I disagree with Kojima. Video Games is an at form to me. Just because something interactive doesn't mean it isn't art. I hope to change this view one day.

  • mgs rising meaning solid snake is getting young or i new clone snake

  • LOL NOOOOT

MGSR will be a spinoff wich happened in the middle of MGS3 and MGS4. Snake wont feature because Snake wasnt there at all.

  • i'm not for sure but dont u mean between mgs2 and mgs4 because mgs3 take place in the past right?

  • @trueninja8500 yeah MGS2 and MGS4 - thanks, forgot it >.>

  • mgs3 is playing as big boss and how he got the title he was later cloned to make solid liquid and solidus

  • its sunny

  • LLLLLLIIIIQQQUAAAAADDDD!!!

  • If you made the game into an elaborate art piece with enough information to tell the entire story in one picture, that'd make it art. I think he's free to share his own opinion, bringing us a series like Metal GEEEAAAAAAAUUUUURRRRRGHHH

  • ...not art...

    Not art?

    NOT ART?!

  • i dont think kojima gives himself enough credit for the great story and games he created.

his analogy about the broken chair and the apple being artistic doesnt make sense to me. to me, true genius is simplicity, and thats what made the metal gear games awesome. easy to pick up cqc, easy to use weapons and manuver stealthily, who wants broken controls anyway?

i dont know what your getting at kojima, but i think you should take a load off and give yourself a pat on the back.

  • Kojima's wrong--art can be interactive.

  • Lets go punch mona lisa! :D

  • Hideo... what a fuck are you tallking about!!!

  • Solid , Liquid , Solidus

  • Guys, chill the fuck out and get a grip ... the new Metal Gear its gonna be called

    METAL GEAR SUNNY ...

  • Hideo Kojima is Legend = The Big Boss

  • I don't think it will be called MGS5(Metal Gear Solid).Solid's saga is over. They'll probably just back to calling it Metal Gear.

  • But... MGS 3 had nothing to do with Metal Gear or Solid Snake, but it's still called MGS3.

  • Hm.You've got a point.I'm just saying it doesn't make sense to call it"Metal Gear Solid".

  • I'm sure it'll be called MGS5 for marketing purposes if nothing else.

  • there hardly goin to change the name, because then u'd think it was a different game entirely! and it has to do with snake because u get to no his father and mother!

  • But Solid Snake has no role in MGS3, neither does Metal Gear. They did it for marketing purposes just like they'll probably do with MGS5

  • The Shagohad WAS the Metal Gear in MGS3.

  • Metal Gears are bipedal tanks, meaning they have 2 legs, which the Shagohod is not.

  • I don't know dude,it's listed as a Metal Gear.

  • It's the spiritual ancestor of the metal gears.

  • I am a huge MSG fan, but I found it odd that Bipedal doomsday machines were created for combat. The nuke scenario from MSG1 proved me wrong.

  • what if it is called metal gear liquid

  • What the heck!? Do you think before you comment!?

    A.)Liquid was a bad guy

    B.)He's dead

C.)They'd probably make it with Meryl and Johnny or something!

  • Are you stupid or something? I meaned that as a joke because its Metal Gear SOLID and solid is the opposide of unsolid or in this case gas or liquid.

So the game also could be called Metal Gear Gas

  • Don't need to get on my case because I'm correcting you!!!

  • think before U comment liquid "died" in the first one too soo u never know and a new prospective is never a bad thing :P

  • LOL, guess you're right. You never can really know what will happen next. Hey, I'm a fanboy and I bet you are, so why don't you check out my channel and you'll see what MGS fanship is all about. :D

  • awesome

  • game is called "solid" because of the 3d polygons kojima used not because of Solid Snake

  • Yes i know, im not stupid

  • well, you're right about the next metal gear will not be called "MGS5". but it will still be called Metal Gear "Solid". Solid Snake has nothing to do with the title. it was called "Solid" because it went from 2D to 3D (to allow you to do more things). if the title was based on a character, then MGS3 would have been called "Metal Gear Naked" or Metal Gear Big Boss". btw, the next metal gear wil be called "Metal Gear Solid: Rising". Take care!

  • I've been playing the Metal Gear Solid series for years now and I still don't know anything about Hideo Kojima... funny world we live in... I blame the media, Youtube and fanboys for not giving people like me who try to get their voice across a chance to express their feelings about the games we connected with so much... but nevermind.

  • once the price on the ps3 goes down below £200 i promise to buy one but right now I want to play gears of war and left 4 dead (actually a good game)

  • hes not making any more !!

  • since MGS5 would be a reboot,

\I say it should be the story of a young marine who is forced to succumb to the Les Enfants Terribles genes to live as he is injured in war and then becomes the center of atraction for many terrorist groups . also, they need to make a spin-off on Grayfox..... the need to....

    just an opinion

  • this guy is awesome

he is like the Japanese Stan Lee

    or Steven Spielberg

  • He's a hybrid....makes amazing characters with amazing cinimatics =)

  • Art, very simply, is expressing yourself through creation. It's not about ruining people's ability to enjoy or feel comfortable within said creation. I think it's very cleary that Kojima has had no problems expressing himself through his games. He talks about the message he applies to Metal Gear Games, if he's sending a message he's expressed himself, and if he's expressed himself it's art. Why does he think one doesn't follow the other.

  • It's just his personal definition of art. Ones definition of art could be completely separate from another, but its a personal definition. There is no right or wrong in art.

  • Well said. But if personal definition defines art then no one can tell me what is or isn't (and believe me, they try). Also I have a bit of a problem with this line of thinking, if a word doesn't have a definition which is clearly identifiable, how is that word not meaningless? I thought that was the essence of communication. Still, I appreciate where you're coming from.

  • okay this isi what i heard from a reliable source Hideo Kojima wants to retire he wants to leave it to his crew, if the crew uses one of his plots for MGS5 he will be forced to work on it cause he does not want it to be messed up

  • Yeah but he also said their are no plans to start devolpment yet, so maybe we'll be seeing MGS5 on PS4!?!?

  • but they are already devellopping like a PS9 or 12 and i know that the PS9 commercial was a joke but i know these two guys who work for sony and they have been working on them. its crazy awesome

  • If the time between the PS2 and the PS3 is similar between the PS3 and the PS4, I wouldn't count on it.

  • Will he make a wii game ?

  • he might but its probably not a MGS game

  • I cried a little at the end of it was so incredibly beautiful and well done. There are both feelings and weight and atmosphere that makes the game feels credible.

The last series of MGS, I do not think so ... the last game with the snake in the lead role might but probably he is in and pull a little of the story.

He does not die because they managed to halt his rapid aging. But is too old to drag themselves into battle

A new era has begun ... The Sons Of Liberty MGS5.

  • I believe in whatever he says he's a genius!!! Well we just misunderstood he's just too literally, when you create a game you cant xpress your feellings because you have to lead the player to a stage, or part where needs to be done in order to go on into the end.

NOW MGS COMBINES GAMES, ART AND MOVIES!! so its artistics elements like characthers, story, music but the game itself its not art. lol

  • Yeah I agree Zonbiie, but who knows he may have only said this to defend his side on this issue.

  • dude u r a fuckin genius

maybe oneday we'll smoke a fatty together ( jk )

  • Poor Kojima. He doesn't think of videogames as art anymore. Thanks, Raiden haters. D:<

  • He says it's not art because we must be able to play it, and if we play it, we constricts the liberty in which things can be expressed. I think he also separates the game and the story, because the story and theme in my opinion is art, his symbolism used is incredibly sentimental

  • Yeah yeah, but he USED to think of them as art.

But Kojima is great anyway, so eh.

    MGS<33

  • Thanks Kojima. Metal Gear is really great.

  • idiots art is like a thing that can be viewed a piece like a apple when you paint it its an apple but since your playing in the game it doesnt just stay the apple you can pick it up and touch it. and remember in games you can do multiple things its not limited to doing the same things everytime. I think he is trying to say that its more than art because its not just plate or its not just a sculpture. that is what i thought when he was speakign the whole time.

  • i agree, and i thought he was saying its more than art as well..

  • yupp open your minds people.

  • alot of talk about apples.

  • games are not art ? ignorant , if it wasn't for Yoji Shinkawa's concept art there wouldn't be such original and full of interest characters , games are drawn first therefore it's art.

  • he said in the interview games contain elements of art which they do, but a game is more than what can be drawn. art is a small piece combined with other things to create a game. the first thing for a game is not art, its a story and characters, then art makes all that stuff come to life.

  • dude, great story writing IS and art!

  • people only say that, but it isnt an art LITERALLY. You dont goto an art class and learn to write a great story, art is different(along the lines of drawing/painting/etc.)

  • From Wikipedia: "Art is the process or product of deliberately and creatively arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses or emotions. In its narrow sense, the word art most often refers specifically to the visual arts, including media such as painting, sculpture, and printmaking. However, "the arts" may also encompass a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music and LITERATURE."

  • hideo-sama! ore no kami da!

  • hideo-sami! ore no kami da!

  • Isn't it ironic that they hire ARTISTS to make their game and then he comes out and tells everyone that the game their artists made is not art? WTF? by his logic (or lack of)film is not art either. Games are an art form no matter how he spins it.

  • Movies can stand the test of time, some of the greatest movies of all time are classics, he's saying this doesn't apply to games since games get outdated, and plus you don't interact with movies like you do games, the same thing will always happen in a movie, a game is all dependent upon the player

  • I guess we have to agree to disagree like some people say. When I was in fine art school I created some sculptures installations that required interactivity from the viewer, interactivity doesn't make something art or not. Video games is a different kind of interactivity but it still makes the audience think and that has a lot to do with art. Some games do stand the test of time maybe not exactly like movies but some do become memorable...

  • This guy is a genius.

  • It's to be expected that a medium's most artistic player downplays his medium. Delacroix did it.

  • A chair is a chair. Got it?

  • When is a door not a door?

    When it is ajar?

  • this guy is god in disguise lol

  • so true

  • yes u r a cock, but this guy is great u mug!!

  • I don't make games, but I still feeel I have enough latitude to say that anything can be a work of art. Ask anybody who loves cars and he will name you a couple of classic cars that some would consider works of art. Same thing for games. Ultima 7 part 1 and 2, mario brothers, Final Fantasy series, etc. Art is a medium through which one communicates a message or feeling in symbolism. That said, I thought MGS3 was a work of art but MGS4 is not. I'd explain why but I'm all out of letters. :)

  • There will be another metal gear (no, not solid) game. Word is that it'll be called mission 3 metal gear

  • I love how the dubbed voice says, "Um," even though the guy is reading from a translated script.

Anyone seen the video where Kojima talks about the BB Corps in English? Really heavy accent.

  • Interactive Entertainment > Art

Because within Games there is Art...it is Art that the user controls, nurtures, and adds his own brush strokes to...for this reason interactive entertainment (video games) can be the greatest art form there is.

  • I like the black suit. He should've game a black suit octo camo option. Right?

  • i pray that someday he will make metal gear solid 5

  • Amen To that.

He cant really just kill off the ps3 Icon

  • it willl be never metal gear solid it might be metal gear .......

me myslef have xbox 360 and its wicked

  • Id prefer they didnt, Snake had that lone wolf protagonist thing about him; a relationship would've ruined his ideal.
