Offensive or not, the word should not be used by any person, but you have to see the situation from a black person's point of view. This word was used by white people for many years as an insult toward black people. Black people were considered inferior to whites.If you look the word up, it means an ignorant person and this is what so many white people thought of blacks.For this reason, I think most black people are insulted when a white person uses it.

Just because the music and films industry uses it doesn't make it right to use it in public. In literature/art it is acceptable to an extent because it imitates real life. Very different from when it's theater and reality. If it offends a racial group and there is justifiable reasons for offense, then it is racism - PERIOD.
