I spent 10 years in Bush Alaska, and it's very similar, with worse housing and no cars (no roads), but exceptional food resources. The problem for much of these areas is no industry of any kind. What kind of industry can be developed to provide employment? It needs to be low skill or easy training (in Alaska, anyway), and have a value added that is enough to sustain a small community.

Some men have ceased to be men and that is part of the reason why poverty persists in these areas. There was a time when a man would do everything in his power to support his family. The man would have at least made an attempt to patch up a house with his bare hands. Then there's the systemic element, but it ultimately falls on the men in the community.

@PassionateGoth with poverty comes depression with depression fatigue and a sense of hopelessness. Malnutrition can be devastating, don't let size fool you. The brain needs proper food to function, to remember, to organize, get goals, etc. We take a lot for granted.

I know with being poor comes depression, but sometimes all you have is your faith and you gotta keep going no matter how tough life gets. I didn't grow up rich with a silver spoon in my mouth. I grew up learning to laugh at our financial short comings. I'm thankful for what I have, and the strength my mom raised me with. I'm a working college student mind you, still not with alot.
Despite the leaks and the buckets I notice the house is extremely junky and trashy. One thing I notice about poor single women with chidren is that with the little money they do have they buy too much unnecessary crap. You'll see the same problem with single low income women in Northern ghettos (even if they have jobs). Basic home care education, learning how to make a dollar stretch will help some. A good man handy with some tools would provide some additional relief.
Being poor is hard and sad, but being filthy is a choice. Why do people who are extremely poor live like hoarders, with crap all over the floor, counters, etc? And I have to say, the woman in yellow doesn't look like she's missed too many meals.
I don't want to be mean but this woman should have never had kids. I am the same age as her and want children some day, but right now I cannot afford them. Children should not be living in those conditions. People have to realize that having children is an option. It is very selfish to have children without having the ability to pay for them.

It appears that the Civil Rights movement never happened here. The same conditions are present I seen in jackson Parish LA. 30 years ago during my summer visits. Present with my great grand mother post-slavery. I am certain God is going to have to be their deliverer. Education will have to play a major role, a child will lead them. Having the value of your children's education be judged by test scores is a major problem in rural areas. All children in the States should be given the same opportunity for a fair and resourceful education. Instead, test scores dictate how much money a school system is granted when it is completely unreasonable to expect that a child who's family can barely afford writing utensils will score as a high as a child who's economic status affords them access to the internet..
Our nation needs to return to The Most High because these heathens will not save is. Only God can and will do that. Those who can help our people must reach put and do that. I don't want to be mean but this woman should have never had kids. I am the same age as her and want children some day, but right now I cannot afford them.
