Veronica Cartwright put the scare in this movie with her terrifying screaming. I realize that the idea of not seeing the alien actually kill his victims with the exception of the lunching teeth bites makes the film more of a psychological thriller, but I wished they kept the scene when it crawled up to Lambert and you see what it actually does to her to make her scream the way she had.

My favorite part is when ripley can hear lambert and the engineer getting it over the intercom, and you get a sick feeling that it is truly 1 on 1 now ! 2 was awesome too, I did not like 3 at first... but it was a return to 1 alien again, as 1 should be as scary as 100 !

I think the technical crew did a brilliant job of this with the actors delivery first class performances. ALIEN is 10 out of 10 scary tense. I was too young to see this in 1979 so I had to wait and one day its on VHS P&S and it scared me I hid behind the couch and covered my ears up! That's the only movie trailer I can remember seeing from my childhood. I was too young to see it in 1979 so I had to wait for TV in the mid 80s. Still one of the scariest films ever. I love the cat as the films "outside observer", what a creative achievement.

Every 80s and 90s action film cliche is down to Cameron's Aliens. Especially those using a US military force! Even "serious" films about the boys in Iraq or Vietnam.
Cameron's Aliens was a brilliant military action film which hasn't yet been surpassed in its pacing and story.
But suspense and intrigue definitely belong to Alien - just the best space horror film ever.

Used to like Aliens the most, but as I've got older I've come to think that the original "Alien" is the better movie. Love Cameron's film, but the sheen of total quality that permeates "Alien", plus its terrific cast, gives it a slight edge.

Alien is brilliant because all the actors were improvising without a script for most of it.
That means it's like being stuck on a spaceship with normal people who have to deal with a nightmare. It makes it horribly real!
No other horror film has come close to this, although "Blair Witch" and "Cloverfield" tried their best.
