I have a feeling he's just kidding around with the orchestra. I have played with many conductors who have little inside jokes which they do in concert.
i think he doesn't know the music,and he work in some Circus.So maybe in this theater they loos a maestro just at last moment,and he with his circus they was there,and this shit Opera House they call him.You see? It's very simple!
@nj4x4fever2 é a abertura da opera Carmen, de Bizet, e muitas arias foram usadas em desenhos, nos do perna longa, pica pau, tom e Jarry... enfim :D é isso
a VERY bad copy of Carlos Kleiber, with even his left hand on the railing... ugghh / no one who attempts to imitate Kleiber actually comprehends Kleiber at all
It's highly individual, but you can see exactly what he wants and the orchestra responds well. I confess I have forgotten who he is, but I have seen this production on TV and it was, in fact, excellent.
@leitfie3579 The orchestra are doing a terrific job, as ever though, the conductor's mistakes are silent. Conducting like this is pure self-indulgence and totally unnecessary to achieve a good interpretation.
@Jamiepullman Just what are the conductor's 'mistakes'? He keeps a perfectly clear (though very small) beat with his left hand, indicates 'big' moments with his right (and, indeed, his whole body) and makes clear expressive gestures in the quieter passage(the Toreador's Song). He is, in fact, easy to follow, and no orchestra would have a problem with him on that score. He is very histrionic I agree, and that may not be to everyone's taste (it isn't wholly to mine), but he is fully professional

It's a parody of Escamillo's exaggerated masculinity and what Nietzsche called the music's "Mediterranean" flair.
Or maybe it's just bad.

@trent1280,
Thanks for mentioning Carlos Kleiber. Haven't heard of him before. I did enjoy watching some of his clips - the man certainly has panache.
I must admit though, I very much enjoyed watching Philippe Jordan's performance. It is rather energetic.

The orchestra sounds great!
That's what really matters most. However, he is a bit over the top.

Nevertheless, he has amazing control over the orchestra.
And for real, he does make delightful sounds.
