yes. it means it's the older non-euro TD. I have no acces to my accel cable, because it's automated injection. And hence it's a TDI. If you can manually control the throttle it's simple Turbo Diesel.
it still a TDI,no matter of weather or not you can control the rpm with a butterfly valve or automatic computer controlled,so you can have a TDI with manual wire throttle.
I have the same engine in my car (Passat B4 )and it's TD 75 ps mechanic fuel pump with boost pin inside,not TDI,besides VW never assembled TDI engines in version B3 of Passat.Peace.
einstein... tdi stands for that, but TD stands for Turbo Diesel, which were the diesel engines produced before the TDI. Those had no automated injection, and thus, the throttle could be manually controlled.

to nie żadne TDI taki miałem w passacie b3 to ma 75 koni :) ale do 140 sie fajnie zbierają .

oh it is 1.9 TD (turbo diesel) with the mechanic injection its is old and good "AAZ" 55Kw (75HP) we have got it too..

many reasons.... but one obviously: TDI stand for turbo diesel injection... That is automated injection. You cannot control the throtle manualy.
