Charlie Sheen was originally supposed to play that role.

If you remember how Emilio Estevez and his family operate, they tend to include one another on productions, as you see their father in the film too. Honestly, if you re-imagine Charlie Sheen as the hippie, it's much more intense and would have resonated more strongly, whereas Ashton is too mellow. Acid trips don't tend to be mellow, Ashton underplayed it, but the other two dudes did good. Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man is a good song too.
