In my opinion Alembics are overrrated and overpriced. Mark killed when he played the JayDee Basses. Fingerstyle on the JD's is more punchy and in your face. If I had a choice which i don't I'd pick the JayDee Baby!!!
@phillybass101 I too love the Jaydee sound..I actually have the good fortune to own one. sadly I can't produce the same magic as Mark. But as a note I ran across this video "The Brothers Johnson - I'll Be Good To You 1976" Louis Johnson on an Alembic. It's live and tight nice sound...check it out.
That Alembic is sooo incredible!!!! Mark King is a genius and I've been a fan and friend of his since the days back in the UK when we got to meet and hang with Level 42.
@witterth Definitely! His performance here is immaculate.
But I wish he could be less busy at times (be a kind of tighter Phil Gould in a way) because Mark’s filling so much space already that it sometimes becomes too jammed pack if you see what I mean.
Anything off of "True Colours" is pure magic. Damn if that Alembic doesn't sound just bloody brilliant! Looking forward to hearing Mark's new Status and of course Pete Ray Biggins on the drums in NYC July 23 2010!!!!!!!!!!! Level forever!!!!!!!!!!!
I could tell from the fist drum fill that this was gonna be a tight band and that they are. What an epic performance. I loved the guitar effects during the first part of the bass solo.
plus: gary husband is a good drummer but i always think that he's too busy with his drumfills. Phil was so much more tasteful and had more of a groove going.
I see you have been very busy listening to vids by our fav group. I wish they would play this in their future gigs. BTW, I am going to see them 4th of October in Manchester's Opera House. I am really thrilled.
AWESOME! bass line is one of Mark Kings best, Dummer was wearin it out, and the Bass/guitar duet was great

@Mowac nice one !!.

@Mowac Yeah.. I know what you mean.. I play bass, too, and it's remarkable how consistent his right
hand is, how syncopated his approach is, AND he is SINGing whilst he does it!! AMAZZing !!

@aaronhowardjudd
i totaly agree! in the 30th ann. tour he's not doing this!
He needs to bring back the warmer Alembic sound as well.
I do not love the carbon neck sound nowadays from his status basses

@dbfleur How about a Graphite necked Alembic?,the best of both worlds?
