this is bias , clearly the Russians had the element of surprise and were able to keep the mission secret until they had at least one missile site ready. The naval blockade could of been devastating for the americans due to the presence of russian nuke armed submarines. Also, russians had short ranges nukes in cuba capable of decimating american armed forces if they landed on cuban lands

@houssein456 Don't think that it was about the fact that the Russians could destroy the blockade (even if it would have tried, America had the stronger naval force) but that Krushchev was sounding out Kennedy and in the process thrying to gain a forward missile base. I think that he would never have gone as far as a full scale nuclear war if not directly provoked and btw this video is definately one off the less biased videos I've seen so far.

russia had the edge on the americans, good thing they weren't aware of the power of popular opinion. They had a good excuse with the bay of pigs, all they needed was to sell the idea to the public. By showing that kennedy stroke first, the blame could of easily be pointed to the usa for this conflict. very good job putting this video together. as a cuban i would have like to see fidel telling the americans that in order to quarentine the cuban ships, the americans had to battle first and win, thats what he said back then and didnt let the americnas search any cuban ship. also, it is said in cuba that the cubans , fidel castro itself ordered the soviet SAM sites to shoot the U-2 plane down. carlos franki on his book states that fidel castro itself gave the order to shoot down the plane.

A bit of diplomacy from the beginning would have made Cuba an ally, albeit a tenuous one. And yes, removing missiles from Turkey was certainly part of the secret (not now) pact. Now it's part of public record and taught in good schools.

I was a child at the time. It came down to hours before attack. We were at home, all of us, not knowing what to do, or where to go. Strangly though, there was no panic anywhere. People just went home, or stayed home. It was very quiet everywhere. We were sure the bombs would come, and we just wanted to be together. There was no traffic like in the movies, it was mostly still on all the highways, no where to run. We waited and breathed again when we were told the bombs would not fall.

Simplistic account of the circumstances and a lesson the world must NEVER forget. Both Kennedy and Kruschev deserve full credit for defying their hardliners in averting WW3.
