too many humans...too much medicine, not enough jobs, not enough resources........this wont end well. humans are the cancer of this planet. think about it...we manipulate and use life until we exhaust it and kill it and move on. without any thought of reprocussions. IN 15 years the whole way we live now.will be a shell of what it was and out natural surroundings...we will exhaust this planet in a quick way.
How did this idiot get away with 13+ years of messing with the bears ?? I feel sorry for the bears that were put down because of this idiot !!! R.I.P. bears .
Im from Alaska and I always steer clear of bears. They are NOT to be messed with. It makes me cringe every time i see this fool getting up close and touching these huge animals. Why did the Alaska park service allow this guy to do what he did?
@Dukeoftruth It's his life - he should be able to do what he wants as long as he doesn't hurt them. This guy was good at heart and he's dead. Have a little respect. I mean, I just started to read up on him and never knew who he was. But, this guy was clearly an animal lover so why don't you not mess with bears, but leave this man alone!
@mousavsm The answer his simple: what he did was WRONG! He should have stayed away from the bears. People need to learn that this behavior is inappropriate! Bears are not meant to be habituated with humans. Treadwell was sending the wrong message and many people (his so called "friends," the park service, and the media) enabled his behavior. People need to learn that Treadwell is an example of what not to do! He got himself, his girlfriend, and two bears killed. Get that part right!
@Potsie791 I don't disagree with you....Infact, I agree with you! I just think that he has passed on and there's no point in putting him down.
There are a lot of people killing animals in sick, sadistic ways. This guy loved animals and I think at least that much we know. He also survived about 12 summers in bear territory. I mean, he died because of a longer stay than he had wished for. Not saying what he did was right; what I'm saying is that I respect him for his love of animals.
@mousavsm No one is putting him down, what people are saying is that he is an example of what not to do and we should go to every measure possible make sure this type of thing doesn't happen again. If he really loved animals, he should have left the bears alone. It's not the intentions that count, it's the results. People are just simply saying that he is not to be emulated, because as I said before his so-called "love for animals" ultimately got two humans and two bears killed. That's it.
In the last few seconds of this video, the bear was saying "You know, Timothy....we've allowed you to be near us and we've accepted the fact that you are here. We also realize that there is something seriously wrong with you. Do whatever you want, but don't touch me" Tim reaches out and pets the bear and the bear swings his head back....again "DON'T TOUCH ME!!" LMAOOOO!!!!!!
@musicalmitch12 Dude, you are one who is annoying. I understood what he was saying perfectly. In other words he said "Crazy assed white man, stop being a dumb ass and leave those bears alone or they are going to eat your ass.
I can place an order to the pizza place and have pizza at my door in 20 minutes, bears on the other hand have to hunt for food and if you don't got none you end up someone else's lunch.
Timothy Treadwell was attempting to become a Discovery Channel star. He acted out of vanity, ambition, and arrogance. He was using these animals for his own purposes. He was exploiting them. His actions were more akin to the rape of the natural world. Never mistake this turd for a researcher, or a person who stands for a noble cause. The bear that ate him did more for nature by removing this blight from the natural landscape.
@timetodepop I didn't look at it that way, but you maybe right. That bear was acting on its god given (that is what I believe, not forcing beliefs on anyone) instinct. Bear are territorial and will fight to the death to defend it from trespassers. This is what gangs do in the inner cities, they kill outsiders who come on their turf. Bears mark their territory by scraping the bark off a tree.
The narrator is really annoying. he sounds like he has a cold or something down his throat. Am I the only one who thinks that the narrator sounds stupid?
you know what i think; he was doing the same thing the one lady from the 80s did with the gorillas. he was just not as fortunate. I think he acted like a bear to protect himself; he knew what they are capable of. he died being a studier of bears which what he did was not ever done. Like the crocodile hunter; they just have a lot of love for what they do.
Due to a conflict with the Airliner, Tim had to stay an extra amount of time, longer than he ever had. Because of this, the bears had begun to hibernate, and foreign ones came into the area. There isnt much to eat in the winter for a bear, so a bear ate him. Wrong place and wrong time is all...
He always mentions how dangerous it is to be around the bears.... on many occasions. However i believe that the bear that killed him may have been a bear that was not normally there with him.
yes, and in the same breath that he mentions the danger, he says how only HE can do it. It really doesnt matter what bear killed him. If you go on the kaitmai website, it says that all the bears are generally safe in the summer months, when there is an adequate food supply - and that those same bears can be just as likely to eat you when hibernation time is coming close and they are driven to eat as many calories as poss.
I think that Tim had his own survival in mind. Tim was a frustrated self proclaimed actor. He was bound and determined to be in front of the camera. Rationlizing that he was the savior of the bears,,,,gave him the excuse he needed to continue his "work" At any rate, he did what he needed to do to survive, and so did the bear that killed him.
I appreciate what people say about living an extraordinary life and tossing off the chains of convention but often it can complicate or threaten the lives of others. In this case: his girlfriend, 2 known bears, and those whose habits his close presence might have altered. Part of thinking outside of conventions is thinking outside of the needs of the self.
its sad to me that people simply cant see outside of what's "considered" emphasis on "considered" normal. What is normal? We made what we "consider" to be normal. One sometimes HAS to step outside the norm to truly experience life and its wonder. In my opinion timothy did that. He knew the risks and paid the ultimate price. Its like a klepto. they know one day they'll probably get caught but they enjoy the thrill and take the risk.
and yes, he was putting himself at risk, but he did this for 13 YEARS. it was a tragedy that he lost his life. the man clearly had a grip on the beauty of nature and found no need to live up to societal expectations. stop trashing a man who spent 13 years dedicating himself to what he loved. if you're that bitter of a person, maybe you need to be thrown into a pit of bears, and we'll see if you last 13 minutes. RIP Timothy Treadwell. you were a true inspiration.
i am currently watching this in my psychology class and it is one of the few movies that has changed my thoughts on life. you may think this man is stupid, but the truth of the matter is, he LOVED his life. he did what he wanted to fulfill his dreams. maybe he had some personality glitches, but he probably died a lot more accomplished and happy in his own right than the average american. just watching the comraderie he makes with nature is amazing to me. very similar to Chris McCandless.
Timothy knew what he was doing and was well aware of the consequences involved, but his admiration and love for these animals far exceeded any fear that he might have had. He was no idiot, just a very involved person. God bless his soul.
He loved bears. He wanted to protect them. Him and his girlfriend knew the danger and accepted it as the cost for thier love. I heard him say Samurai spirit and I think that both of them died with that spirit. And everyone is insane one way or another.
yeah, I am sure they were filled with love when that bear was killing them. You could probably hear alot of love in treadwells voice as he screamed and moaned and cried for his life and begged his girlfriend to save him.
If I were ever to camp in grizzly territory I would bury my food a half a mile away from where I slept lol Ive camped where there are black bears and they are little jesters compared to a massive grizzlies. it definitely blows my mind that people go into parks, camp n leave shit out that attract bears. If you dont respect them then you shouldnt complain when they eat u. Which reminds me of Katt Williams when he jokes about tigers at the zoo "then the tiger eat your asshole out baby the end" ha
hahahahah that bear in the end, that bear in the end when his in the river with him.
The bears like 'oh wtf is this retard doing now' then when he goes to touch him at 3.25 the bear quickly looks at him like 'DONT TOUCH ME U COCK' ahahahahahaha
Some have little respect for the power of nature, which is beyond our control. But to think that way is deranged? (Treadwell was a little out there it seemed don't get me wrong, but you almost have to be). He walked the same line we all do everyday. We could die anytime by lightning or a hurricane or an earthquake or a tree falling. But he saw the beauty in between those moments and he wasn't afraid. I mourn the death of Timothy Treadwell. He showed that true living comes at great risk.
He was bipolar.... I still miss him a bit! He did what ... IDK..... He did things "normal" people wouldn't do. He gave us all a front row seat. That's why we're here reading, watching and commenting... right??
I think Timothy Treadwell was a good person, although loony. He was a good guy; He knew the risk. He knew the bears could kill them. He just wanted people to know that there can be relationships between human and bear.
Herzog capitalized on these tapes in a big way by making it appear in his movie like Timothy was a nut case with a death-wish. His commentary expounds his own, very simple ideas about nature and how man doesnt belong out there in wild nature with all these horrible animals.
It's odd that so many on here are slating Herzog. Without this documentary I'm pretty sure many people here wouldn't have even heard of Timothy Treadwell. I think, if anything, the documentary gives Treadwell's effort an added depth that it probably doesn't deserve. I don't think it's a tragedy. He was old enough to know the risks, as was the woman who accompanied him. If she was there out of some misguided sense of loyalty, I think that perfectly exemplifies the oddness of these folks.
i completely agree. one of the things that is overlooked is that without him making this film - a lot of people would have no idea that 13 years of commitment filming the grizzly bear was ever done by one individual.
Um...actually, he did save them. I don't want to argue anymore.
There are those who know the truth. Paul Watson does. Jewel does. Timothy does. God does. Get it now? Shut up and act like a real American. We all, as Americans, have our own opinions. It's a free country. Go ahead and argue.
Well actually, I think Werner Herzog made Timmy look as something he was not. What I think, I think he was a wonderful person, yet a little loony. But that's normal. He had overdoses, deadly ones, that sent him to Alaska, to defend the bears. And YES, he did protect them. YES, poachers did actually come. Even in a federal area, poachers did come. 4 bears were killed a year after his death because he was not there to protect them.
I am a vegetarian and I don't personally harm animals. But who the hell cares if a few bears die you can't stop fool people doing what they want to...he didn't protect anything, there are bigger problems to be faced
Get a grip? I'm not going to. Now, I am a vegetarian too. But I have different views than you, than other people. Taking the life of an animal for nothing more because it's hungry, for food, for trophy, for fun, or just for a thrill is despicable. There is certainly proof he protected them. I have it.
"There is certainly proof he protected them. I have it"
And the Bears are better off now in your opinion?...How about the unfortunate bear that ate this piece of trash?...He is dead because of this imbecile....How is that protecting animals?...He was told not to feed the bears and couldn't even get that right...
Chinastar: I agree he wanted to help but he ended up precipitating the deaths of two bears by being to grandiose and adventurous. True environmentalists and naturalists would never endanger an animal or a habitat that way, fascinating and well intentioned as he may have been/seemed.
BLB: Yeah, Timmy killed two bears, but that specifically wasn't his fault. He clearly advised Jewel, authorities, and many other people that if he died, he did not want the bear to be killed. The rangers had no business in killing the second bear. Curiosity doesn't need to be punished.
Timetodepop:
He may be a piece of trash to you, but that man meant something to his loved ones. Why judge a man you don't even know?
Both:
I'm just going to ignore you from now on. Have a nice life.
" The rangers had no business in killing the second bear."
As "bear intelligent" as me have been he did not have any authority to advise rangers on what to do in case of an emergency. that's not being judgmental, that's reality.
I would defer to the native American man above if you really believe in living off the land and are anti-Britney/Trash culture as you say you are.His people kill too-whales, bears, seals. Are they also part of the problem you talk of?
There seems to be a lot of bad feeling for this guy from the authorities. Is there a chance he was killed by something else and was just eaten by the bears! He didnt seem to be acting like a bear on the film, I for one have never heard a grizzly talking in a gay American accent!
I love the series "Big Cat Diary" and was thinking of what Johnathan Scott once said, that (referring to the Cheetah Kike who used to sit on his jeep roof) "It is so tempting to reach out and touch her, but we must never do that, as that will break the boundary, She is a wild cheetah".
Look Tim was mentally ill. He didn't grasp the concept that these are not happy "pets" or friendly kindered sprits. His girlfriend was a well educated adult and should have known better but then again he was out there for 12+ years without getting hurt. We as in America have greedy CEO's bankrupting us and they never get what they "Deserve" except a HUGE bonus for destroying their company??? Tim was harmless and many many worse people out "there" than this guy. RIP Tim.
I will say it...he got what he deserved. The girlfiend though, that's tragic. She was there because of her affection or love for the man, but he neglected her, denied her presence on film, pretended she wasnt there because all he could focus on was his 2nd coming bear spirit persona. And he got her killed.
race pilots can run fast because they have experience right? But sometimes it also goes wrong for them. What Tim tried is not much different. Try to live with dangerous wild animals or doing some dangerous sports, in both cases it is playing with death. The only difference is how people react when things go wrong. Material things are being restored for the next adrenaline rush. Dangerous animals are usually killed. Humans are affraid of dangerous animals but they don't fear the danger for a rush
The end of this clip sums it up visually...the bear is curious, notices Tim isn't running therefor its not an easy meal so it has to waver whether or not to attack. So more investigation has to happen. The bear comes closer, tries to smell Tim, Tim sidesteps, and as the bear leaves, Tim touches the bear. And the bear instantly turns to deal with it. It's not co-existence whatsoever. It's the food chain. Respect larger more dangerous things as you're only alive due to their grace or disinterest.
are you realy an animal friend if you go camp in the wild with a gun? How many people are doing this today? They do it because they are scared of these animals and want to protect themselves. Timmothy did it for 12 seassons without a gun. Doesn't that mean anything to you?
These bears are being killed because people like to camp in there territory and they like to sleep good at night. Think about that. We cannot just kill everything that walks in our way.

I've searched for evidence or footage that proves that tithead treadwell was protecting bears from poachers!NONSENSE is the answer.PPL don't go camping in national parks with guns either, IT'S AGAINST THE LAW.This was a disturbed individual that got what he deserved.Have you ever heard of somone going into the african bush to live with lions?WILD ANIMALS ARE DANGEROUS AND WILL EAT YOU HOW HARD IS IT TO UNDERSTAND THAT?Treadwell was an arse.Talking to bears like they're babies says it all really
that's right man, why don't you go buy a gun in case of a wild animal should ever attack you. That's what humanity is been doing for centurys now. We don't have to care about dangerous animals or what? We just shoot them all until you will only find them in a zoo.
It wasn't so much about protecting the bears, but more of a religious experience for him. There was a real spiritual connection he had with them, you can't deny that. He would have been killed the first time he went out there if there wasn't. Not just anyone can walk 5 feet away from a bear and sit there and talk to them.
How many people play with dead every day? why don't you guy's go chase them. It seems pretty normal to play with dead only for an adrenaline rush like dangerous sports for example. One guy is killed by a bear because he lived with him for 12 seassons and that man is a looney. Bunch of hypocritical people. You are all blind for what Timmothy is trying to tell the world. STOP SENSELLES KILLING ANIMALS
@bravesfanforever31 Yeah, they killed them if they got to close. Some hunted them for food. This is not just native Americans, back in the days wherever there was wild bears, people either hunted them for food, or didn't want them around.
@bravesfanforever31 How do you suppose that so many natives kept themselves warm? What did they use for trade? I think many of them used bear skins. I could be wrong (not really) but I think many natives killed/kill bears for food/clothingshelter/defense and in the hundreds of thousands of years, many bears got many men too.
Treadwell was wrong, he endangered the bears out of his own ego for his own ends and ego, and he "protected" bears in a park where they already were protected so that argument doesn't fly. He was a frustrated actor trying desperately to carve fame for himself and did it at a terrible cost to himself and Amie who is truly an innocent victim.

Timothy was a fearless scientist who did wonderous studies on these bears. His interactions with the bears were no less random than other bears coming and going through Grizzly Maze for 13 years. Its just that you all are not scientists, just a bunch of assholes with opinions with the unfortunate capability to express them were they are not wanted or regarded as anything other than shit.
Yeah and because we aren't 'scientists' we didn't end up as bear shit. Your opinions don't matter. How in the hell did a hippie like you access the internet anyway. I thought it was against your hippie code or something. Ditch the stupid shit and go into a life of porn or somthing. Bears can eat shit and die. Oops, looks like one already did.
who said i was a hippie? you sound so ignorant; when you talk about accessing the internet and "hippie code" arent you violating your own code fighting literacy?
You claim that 'Tim Tom' there was a 'SCIENTIST'. That alone makes you a hippie. At least in MY eyes. I won't speak for anyone only myself hence MY O-P-I-N-I-O-N. And what I meant by 'hippie code' is the hippie way of life. Like Tim Tom's and yours apparently. That's my views on this retarded 'scientist'. Calling him a 'scientist' makes me feel dirty for some reason. It's like letting a retard ATTEMPT heart surgery.
just to be not so nasty to each other any more there ARE retards attempting heart surgery; they're called surgeons! lol (im a nurse and have witnessed some TERRIBLE things in the health care INDUSTRY. of course you have the right to your opinion. I just felt he was brave and he spoke like he knew what he was doing, i may be wrong about his actually DEGREE; but if it werent for his "notoriety" most people wouldnt ever know about all that poaching! in AK, hippies are called "granolas" by the way!
Finally a 'smart' argument that covers all the bases. Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't his 'expiditions' in a wildlife preserve? That's one of the reasons I called him a fool but if it was misinformation then I apologize. Remind me not to get cancer.
actually i think youre right, Grizzly Maze is a protected preserve; i have family is AK and thats what my brother thought too. Currently I work for a 32 year old wife, sister and mother of 2 young boys dying of ALS and docs and nurses have screwed up so many procedures, paperwork, medications and her basic everyday care so many times she has panic attacks when she has a new caregiver. nurses and docs on power trips with peoples lives in their hands. not just lives, their last remaining memories!
As I read your comment I got a strange picture in my head. I've got the feeling you might be a totally MILF. I know I'm being beyond rude but that's just the impression I got. That hospital will probably go out of business if that sort of stuff keeps up. But it also sounds like a good place to get revenge on a bunch of assholes. Like me for instance.
"who said i was a hippie? you sound so ignorant; when you talk about accessing the internet and "hippie code" arent you violating your own code fighting literacy?"

This idiot retard assclown talking in the video doesnt even sound like he is sure of himself. On top of that, why the hell are you borrowing the bear that ate him and use it to draw in tourists if you think it hurts so bad?? Hypocrite piece of shit.
If you guys even closely watched or read anything Timothy Treadwell tried to do, you would see that he was an objective scholar for many years before he became overwhelmed by his intense desire to HELP the bears.
You are funny. Treadwell was a "scientist", "objective scholar". Um....no, he was a kook who was breaking the law. Also, why did the bears need to be saved? They were living in a protected park. I can't imagine why someone like you would truly make this guy into a hero. He was a homosexual dude who had such a large void in his life that he had to have a cause.
Timothy Treadwell tried to be a Bear and ended up as Bear scat. A true fit ending for him. He will be remembered not as a protector of Bears, but just someone who crossed the line. He did more damage to bears than he realize. I only wish that Park Rangers or his friends had more persuasive words for him to stop his activities. The sad thing is that he brought another person to die with him. And she died in vain with no cause.
this man i thought id respect but i dont, he put bears in danger by putting himself in danger. he di try to do the right thing by helping them but he really didnt help them
Jersey the entire premise of Change Management requires looking at the bigger picture, so of course I took all variables into consideration prior to posting. Timothy didn't do shyt to help the bears so it wasn't edited out. No filmmaker would take out what could lead to Tim's "martyrdom".
When will you people learn that the only problem with being Gay exists for straight people.
If Timothy was struggling with his sexuality it's because of idiots like the ones in this thread calling people "fag" and writing "glad he dead" and so forth.
No - his biggest problem was that he was gay and stuggled with that his whole life. Try doing some research beyond the video. And try and carry on a discussion without calling someone an idiot or moron.
I think Treadwell's biggest personal issue, and something that drove him, was his inability and unwillingess to accept that he was homosexual. I think that caused him to try to act ultra-macho (his verbal tirade against government officials, his desire to put himself in harms way, his lame attempt about talking about trying to score with women, etc.).
I'm not "hostile" and I'm also not a boy. I'm a white girl, fucktard. And if you ARE white, stop demonizing our entire race. Not ALL of us are sociopathic murderers that want to control the universe, okay? Thanks, bye.
I agree. The Native American guy said it best-Treadwell crossed a line between humans and animals. I'm a teacher and the same thing applies in the classroom. You have to establish and maintain that boundary between teacher and student. If you don't bad consequences will occur-disruptive students, disrespectful students, students not working to their potential, and low performance. In Treadwell's case it was the loss of life when the boundary between bear and man was breached.
I personally respect Timothy. He did what he wanted. He documented bears without weapons...for thirteen years. That was amazing. You see, sometimes people have connections with animals that are unexplainable. Tim healed from the scars of drugs and alcohol, and made something of his life and defended bears from poachers. And yes, he did defend them. Though a federally protected park, poachers invaded anyway. Tim saved those bears from a cruel death. R.I.P TIM AND AMIE!
I feel for Tim Treadwell and am sorry he's gone, but regarding saving bears from poachers, if there were real poachers, wouldn't they just have shot Treadwell and then gone about their business? In the film it shows Treadwell documenting people throwing rocks at one of his bears. He didn't even show himself ! He hid in the brush and took video of the incident. How is that protecting the bear? Maybe the film was edited and we didn't get to see Tim bravely confronting the rock throwers ?
He died doing what he loved, I think in a strange way, he knew it was going to happen, and in a deeper kind of sick way, wanted to be apart of the bear. Which in turn actually happened and I doubt the stomach of a bear is where he wanted to be, but he said in his videos hed die for the bears and I guess he did in a sense, so im kind of disapointed in him and sad for him at the same time. But thats my opinion, I dont think he was insane I think it was his passion, and he died for his passion.
stupidity cost him his live, people go round all day being indiviual and dont lose your life, but if u think playing with bears when others fear them is a sense of indiviuality is stupid, its not a case of the coulr red is in but he chooses to wear green, hes doin something most people dont do because its stupid
I'm glad they interviewed the native american guy, and he was able to explain why Timothy Treadwell's actions were wrong from an ecological perspective. It's not just a tragedy for Treadwell that he was killed - it was also a tragedy for the bears that ate him, since they too were killed. Habituating bears to human contact is dangerous for the bears, and however enthusiastic Treadwell was, it was slightly self-indulgent on his part.
This guy was clinically insane, either that or he has the naive mind of a 3 yr old, "Oh hi Winnie nice day today, the water is clear and the sun is shining"
this man is a BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN SON BITCH STRAY FROM CALIFORNIA THE STATE OF GAY FAG HIPPIES LIKE TREADWELL!!! HORRAY FOR THE BEARS IM GLAD TREADS ASS IS BEAR SHIT STUPID MOTHER FUCKING DUMBASS SHIT PRICK HIPPIE ASSED BITCH
Grizzly bears are a black market commodity. Those who think that animals that are harvested for their livers, claws etc,are not in need of protection are the reasons there is a black market for wildlife.Get off your pedestals you morons. He did what he thought was right. What did you do that was worth your useless hyde?Drink beer, party, drugs or just liked ridiculing someone who had balls.Unlike your worthless asses.
Much of the films were edited and thats why you didnt see him protect any "damn bears".I suppose your view of it was more from a narrow minded stand point rather than a broader perspective.Change the balance of nature? LOL. what a putts!
First of all it's spelled "PUTZ" yolu goddamn illiterate NOT "putts"
Second of all I have a friggin degree in "Change Management" so all I do is look at things from a broader perspective.
Even the museum curator said he was fucking with the balance of nature by a habituating the bears to humans. Look you are young and clueless. Calling me names is NOT going to improve your ignorance.
Oh thank you for the correction! However you knew what I meant and that was IS the point!Illiterate?Perhaps you aught to get your bombastic head out of your tight ass way of thinking and you might find that you can see things more clear than you think you do.Change Management? The only thing that you seem to be able to manage is how to make yourself sound even more uneducated.Clueless? To assess me by calling me clueless and illiterate over a mispelled word is REAL ignorance on your part.YOU PUTZ!
I will admit, he was a bit foolish, but he had a good heart for the animals, and more passion than many CLAIM to possess. I see animals as God's creations that should be loved, but also respected. But that's no reason to COMPLTETLY cut off all interaction between the speicies! We depend on them for so much.
i agree with that to a certain degree however it should have been more safely monitored,,theres another guy i just saw that lives amongst polar bears and his huskys and playing with these bears and everything,,i think he or his dogs will be next getting to friendly witht these wild animals,,sure everything goes well for awhile but it just takes one instant for things to go wrong so they should just be more carefull in there research,,he should have had a gun at least is what im saying
I agree with Sven Haakanson, he wanted to be a bear and his intrusive and harassing actions around the bear was the ultimate disrespect to the bear. These bears never asked for or needed his protection.
That did, it. 1:51 I agree. I was a thinking this guy is just gonna cheap shot Treadwell, but he made a wonderful point that should be pointed out. Even tho I agree with Tim's Spirit.
The Alaskan Indian said it best, no matter how pure your intention; YOU MUST RESPECT NATURE. It is far too powerful not to, Mr. Treadwell was an environmentalist but he forgot the golden rule. I am an Eagle Scout, that is the most important fact I was taught about nature. Salaam.
If you read John Locke, you might not say that. Property rights begin when man changes nature in some way (through labor) to make it his own. Otherwise nature belongs to ALL.
too many humans...too much medicine, not enough jobs, not enough resources........this wont end well. humans are the cancer of this planet. think about it...we manipulate and use life until we exhaust it and kill it and move on. without any thought of reprocussions. There are a lot of people killing animals in sick, sadistic ways. This guy loved animals and I think at least that much we know. He also survived about 12 summers in bear territory. I mean, he died because of a longer stay than he had wished for. Not saying what he did was right; what I'm saying is that I respect him for his love of animals.
mousavsm 6 months ago
@mousavsm No one is putting him down, what people are saying is that he is an example of what not to do and we should go to every measure possible make sure this type of thing doesn't happen again. If he really loved animals, he should have left the bears alone. It's not the intentions that count, it's the results. People are just simply saying that he is not to be emulated, because as I said before his so-called "love for animals" ultimately got two humans and two bears killed. That's it.

We also realize that there is something seriously wrong with you. Do whatever you want, but don't touch me" Tim reaches out and pets the bear and the bear swings his head back....again "DON'T TOUCH ME!!" LMAOOOO!!!!!!

The bear that ate him did more for nature by removing this blight from the natural landscape.
timetodepop 1 year ago 3
@timetodepop I didn't look at it that way, but you maybe right. That bear was acting on its god given (that is what I believe, not forcing beliefs on anyone) instinct. Bear are territorial and will fight to the death to defend it from trespassers. This is what gangs do in the inner cities, they kill outsiders who come on their turf. Bears mark their territory by scraping the bark off a tree.

IMHOLUKE 2 years ago
He always mentions how dangerous it is to be around the bears.... on many occasions. However i believe that the bear that killed him may have been a bear that was not normally there with him.
mustafalang 2 years ago
yes, and in the same breath that he mentions the danger, he says how only HE can do it.

RIP Timothy Treadwell. you were a true inspiration.
gloryislove 2 years ago
i am currently watching this in my psychology class and it is one of the few movies that has changed my thoughts on life. you may think this man is stupid, but the truth of the matter is, he LOVED his life. he did what he wanted to fulfill his dreams. maybe he had some personality glitches, but he probably died a lot more accomplished and happy in his own right than the average american. just watching the comraderie he makes with nature is amazing to me. very similar to Chris McCandless.

Timothy knew what he was doing and was well aware of the consequences involved, but his admiration and love for these animals far exceeded any fear that he might have had. He was no idiot, just a very involved person. God bless his soul.

If I were ever to camp in grizzly territory I would bury my food a half a mile away from where I slept lol Ive camped where there are black bears and they are little jesters compared to a massive grizzlies. it definitely blows my mind that people go into parks, camp n leave shit out that attract bears.

ChinaStar95 2 years ago
It's odd that so many on here are slating Herzog. Without this documentary I'm pretty sure many people here wouldn't have even heard of Timothy Treadwell. I think, if anything, the documentary gives Treadwell's effort an added depth that it probably doesn't deserve. I don't think it's a tragedy. He was old enough to know the risks, as was the woman who accompanied him. If she was there out of some misguided sense of loyalty, I think that perfectly exemplifies the oddness of these folks.
Gaff76 2 years ago
i completely agree. one of the things that is overlooked is that without him making this film - a lot of people would have no idea that 13 years of commitment filming the grizzly bear was ever done by one individual.

ChinaStar95 2 years ago
Well actually, I think Werner Herzog made Timmy look as something he was not. What I think, I think he was a wonderful person, yet a little loony. But that's normal. He had overdoses, deadly ones, that sent him to Alaska, to defend the bears. And YES, he did protect them. YES, poachers did actually come. Even in a federal area, poachers did come. 4 bears were killed a year after his death because he was not there to protect them.
ChinaStar95 2 years ago
Some people need to get a grip.
I am a vegetarian and I don't personally harm animals. But who the hell cares if a few bears die you can't stop fool people doing what they want to...he didn't protect anything, there are bigger problems to be faced
donnyab 2 years ago
Get a grip? I'm not going to. Now, I am a vegetarian too. But I have different views than you, than other people. Taking the life of an animal for nothing more because it's hungry, for food, for trophy, for fun, or just for a thrill is despicable. There is certainly proof he protected them. I have it.
ChinaStar95 2 years ago
"There is certainly proof he protected them. I have it"
And the Bears are better off now in your opinion?...How about the unfortunate bear that ate this piece of trash?...He is dead because of this imbecile....How is that protecting animals?...He was told not to feed the bears and couldn't even get that right...

Chinastar: I agree he wanted to help but he ended up precipitating the deaths of two bears by being to grandiose and adventurous. True environmentalists and naturalists would never endanger an animal or a habitat that way, fascinating and well intentioned as he may have been/seemed.
BrickLaneBetty 2 years ago
BLB: Yeah, Timmy killed two bears, but that specifically wasn't his fault. He clearly advised Jewel, authorities, and many other people that if he died, he did not want the bear to be killed. The rangers had no business in killing the second bear. Curiosity doesn't need to be punished.
Timetodepop:
He may be a piece of trash to you, but that man meant something to his loved ones. Why judge a man you don't even know?
Both:
I'm just going to ignore you from now on. Have a nice life.
ChinaStar95 2 years ago

" The rangers had no business in killing the second bear."
As "bear intelligent" as me have been he did not have any authority to advise rangers on what to do in case of an emergency. that's not being judgmental, that's reality.

race pilots can run fast because they have experience right? But sometimes it also goes wrong for them. What Tim tried is not much different. Try to live with dangerous wild animals or doing some dangerous sports, in both cases it is playing with death. The only difference is how people react when things go wrong. Material things are being restored for the next adrenaline rush. Dangerous animals are usually killed. Humans are affraid of dangerous animals but they don't fear the danger for a rush
scraleteagle70 2 years ago

Timothy Treadwell tried to be a Bear and ended up as Bear scat. A true fit ending for him. He will be remembered not as a protector of Bears, but just someone who crossed the line. I think Treadwell's biggest personal issue, and something that drove him, was his inability and unwillingess to accept that he was homosexual.

But thats my opinion, I dont think he was insane I think it was his passion, and he died for his passion.

stupidity cost him his live, people go round all day being indiviual and dont lose your life, but if u think playing with bears when others fear them is a sense of indiviuality is stupid, its not a case of the coulr red is in but he chooses to wear green, hes doin something most people dont do because its stupid

ddbd is right, stupid people only die deaths this hilarious.

"He did what he thought was right."
I watched this doc and not once did I see him "protect" any damn bears from humans.
He spent his time trying to rearrange the balance of nature.
lezxotic 3 years ago
Much of the films were edited and thats why you didnt see him protect any "damn bears".I suppose your view of it was more from a narrow minded stand point rather than a broader perspective.Change the balance of nature? LOL. what a putts!
JerseyRenegade 3 years ago
First of all it's spelled "PUTZ" yolu goddamn illiterate NOT "putts"
Second of all I have a friggin degree in "Change Management" so all I do is look at things from a broader perspective.
Even the museum curator said he was fucking with the balance of nature by a habituating the bears to humans. Look you are young and clueless. Calling me names is NOT going to improve your ignorance.
lezxotic 3 years ago
Oh thank you for the correction! However you knew what I meant and that was IS the point!Illiterate?Perhaps you aught to get your bombastic head out of your tight ass way of thinking and you might find that you can see things more clear than you think you do.Change Management? The only thing that you seem to be able to manage is how to make yourself sound even more uneducated.Clueless? To assess me by calling me clueless and illiterate over a mispelled word is REAL ignorance on your part.YOU PUTZ!
JerseyRenegade 3 years ago
I will admit, he was a bit foolish, but he had a good heart for the animals, and more passion than many CLAIM to possess. I see animals as God's creations that should be loved, but also respected. But that's no reason to COMPLTETLY cut off all interaction between the speicies! We depend on them for so much.
CrystalHunter1989 4 years ago
i agree with that to a certain degree however it should have been more safely monitored,,theres another guy i just saw that lives amongst polar bears and his huskys and playing with these bears and everything,,i think he or his dogs will be next getting to friendly witht these wild animals,,sure everything goes well for awhile but it just takes one instant for things to go wrong so they should just be more carefull in there research,,he should have had a gun at least is what im saying

I agree with Sven Haakanson, he wanted to be a bear and his intrusive and harassing actions around the bear was the ultimate disrespect to the bear. These bears never asked for or needed his protection.
fenholloway 4 years ago 7
That was a real good statement. There is a world of bears and a world of TT. He tried to in a world which was not his. And he paid the price. Period.

timothy is human, that's why he's my brother, the bear is but feces compared to us, the feces that bore the digested remains of treadwell.
daliusbutkus 4 years ago 2
That did, it. 1:51 I agree. I was a thinking this guy is just gonna cheap shot Treadwell, but he made a wonderful point that should be pointed out. Even tho I agree with Tim's Spirit.

Nature isn't more powerful than a gun, or a dumb violent human... so no- it is to be not only respected, but protected from our dumber brothers.
CrashResistant 4 years ago 7
The Alaskan Indian said it best, no matter how pure your intention; YOU MUST RESPECT NATURE. It is far too powerful not to, Mr. Treadwell was an environmentalist but he forgot the golden rule. I am an Eagle Scout, that is the most important fact I was taught about nature. Salaam.

uh... humans are part of nature, just like mars, galaxies, fish, and atoms, you should understand that

No, humans OWN nature :) property rights.
JosephtheLibertarian 4 years ago
If you read John Locke, you might not say that. Property rights begin when man changes nature in some way (through labor) to make it his own. Otherwise nature belongs to ALL.
