There is a little geographic misplacement here on the map, the mines in Northern Sweden are pictured in Northern Finland. It truly is a forgotten Front, not only to the rest of the world but to Battlefield too...
The Documentary is very interesting, nice work posting it!
@hunt801 Please do not write stuffs you don't know about. Sweden did help Finland. You probaly haven't seen the movie: ''Framom främsta linjen''. It's a about a Swedish soldiers in Finland.
Interesting fact. The SKF factory in Gothenburg (Sweden) made ball bearings for both the allies and axis. When the Americans found out, they threatened to carpet-bomb the entire city if they didn't stop. The Sweds didn't stop and the Americans got pissed, but never did anything about it.
@Picard578 Don't get me started about education in the US. People in the US are seriously under-educated. I don't think young people know of a country of Yugoslavia ever existing. Ask a young person in the US who Tito was? I'm sure most would think it was Britney Spears dog or something.
it is true that history is written by the winners..how could someone honest ever have the impudence to declare that "the Soviet Union felt threatened by an attack from Finland or Germany"???why in the Gods name should Finland ever have wanted to attacke URRS??or Germany??the Soviet Union had a world wide reactionary policy toward almost all the countries, and was a serious menace to the european order..SHE was a real threat..as the english gangster Churchill pointed out a hundred times..
I remember my father telling me stories about my grandfather (low-level officer in the Weapon SS Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler) being stationed in Finnland and fighting against the Russians (Emphasizing that the Finns were incredibly tough fighters making necklaces out of cervicales of fallen russian soldiers). Does anybody have informations about secret support for Finnlands or was this during later stages of the war?
@TTiger75 Finland fought alone in the Winter war because of the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact (dunno, if "pact" is the right word). But in the Continuation war that began simultaneously with Operation Barbarossa, Germans fought in Northern Finland to free more Finns for the battles on the Karelian isthmus. And that time there was one Waffen-SS unit in Northern Finland so that must where your grandfather served. Viele Grüsse für deinen Grossvater!
@Sabatonf4n Thx a lot for your answer. Sadly my grandfather died already more than 20 yrs ago and my father died more than 4yrs ago and I did not inherite any photos or anyhting like that. My father even sold the dagger of my grandfather years ago...
finland's sacrifices are well enough remembered by the world. if the finnish would've blown the murmansk railway tracks, despite what churchill had threatened, the nazis would've probably won the war. if the finns ha dparticipated in the siege of leningrad, the nazis would've probably won the war. but we didn't, because marshal mannerheim knew his shit.
@Qlasettaja You have no humor you emo retarded fuck maybe you should read how I wrote it and the sarcastic smiley added to the end. Ofcourse I understand the series are called Battlefield
It is said when Molotov was told that the Finnish army had 250 000 men at the border, he said with an insulting look that Sovjet has 500 000 men at the border. "Really?" Finnish minister Paasikivi said. "Well, I guess I need to call the army HQ and tell them to give our soldiers at the border one more bullet." A pretty acurrate description of the Finnish soldiers courage and discipline... =)
I wouldn't say too much about Paasikivi. Because of Paasikivi, Finland lost so much after the Continuation War. He couldn't keep his mouth shut and he was real soviet ass licker. Of course Stalin used Paasikivi with Kolontai as much as he wanted. That's why Stalin always wanted that Paasikivi need to be a person who negotiate with Soviet Union. Paasikivi was a big harm for Finland.
@Qlasettaja Harmikas millä tavalla? Eikö armeija sinun mielestä tarvitse kykenevää ylipäällikköä. On toki totta, että Mannerheim teki joitain virheitä. Esimerkiksi asemasodan aikana olisi puolustukseen pitänyt panostaa paljon enemmän. Linnoituksesta vastannut kenraali Laatikainen Mannerheimin kanssa eivät uskoneet suurhyökkäykseen. the map at 2:40 is wrong because it places fields in nothern finland instead of sweden, though the iron ore did come from sweden as the commentator says
What's more, they never charged tanks with cavalry, it's a fable.
Also, in almost all their battles they were placed in positions of supreme importance, often to save someones ass or to take objectives no one else could achieve.
They had highest kills as pilots, amazing ferocity as footmen, astounding resilience as tankers and tragic consequences as paratroopers.
I am an American, with a master's degree in Military History, and I applaude the Polish and their sacrifices.
Sorry you're wrong. During the polish campaign only 45 german aircrafts were shot down by polish fighters who themselves suffered 150 casaulties in air. My source: I've only summarized the polish claims acc. the air aces homepage of A. Magnus, who himselves has a lot of literature references.
Its easier to kill your enemy when you are on the the defensive. As a general rule the attacker suffers more losses than the defender. This is because the defender is dug in and has AA guns and other defenses on the ground compared to the German invaders who were doing Blitzkrieg.
Let me tell you something. Only finnish defence line was called Mannerheim line which was only 132 km long with 101 bunkers in Karelia. Mannerheim said himself that luckily it can hold a week. It wasn't strong line at all. Whole border with Soviet Union were more than 1000 km long. In north there were no trenches. It was so called mobile warfare that finnish soldiers used. The final result wasn't because finnish forces were dug in. That's not true at all.
First they fought alone, many captured were finally freed when USSR became an 'Ally'. Then these men went the long route to other countries.
They fought in the Battle of Britain as pilots, footmen in such places as Monte Cassino, tankers at the 'Mace' in the Falais pocket, paratroopers in Market-Garden, and that's a short list.
Those still in Poland fought tragic battles in Warsaw.
And after all this... they lost their country for 40 years....
Finnish and the exile Polish soldiers of WW2 were probably the bravest in the whole war. Yet everybody ignores them because they hadn't much influence on the outcome of the whole war, even though the Polish 1st Armoured not only captured their own mission objectives but also those of the 4th Canadian Armoured in Normandy on one occasion. Two Polish battlegroups halted 4 German Panzerdivisions at Mont Ormel. 3 of thsoe divisions were Waffen-SS. That's true bravery.

Hehe. Really? Would you be so kind as to quote any historian saying Norway "joined" Nazi-Germany? Ian Kershaw is regarded rather highly as one of this era's foremost historians - and I would guess you, as a "student of history" have read his work? Mannerheim was an interesting fellow. He was pretty much a realist and did what was best for his country. Recently new audio tapes have come to light of private talks with Hitler, which I found very interesting.
@hunt801 Well Sweden wanted to stay neutral and Finland and Sweden were never allies. Out of nowhere a country comes and say we need help. But some volunteered, around 10.000 swedish men came to help finland which is 1/30 of your soldiers. Sweden also had some airplanes with swedish pilots flying which did a huge difference believe it or not.
@hunt801 u know that there were many volunteers from sweden rigth? and some from norway and they had help from germany too....the americans or british was not involved as i know but there werent just finns.
hehe yea its pretty weird because you can clearly see the border betwene Sweden and Finland and if that werent enough Finland is more darker green in that map then Sweden.. So its weird that the person who have made the map still puts the mines in Finland and not Sweden
The mines shown there are in Northern Finland, not in Sweden. Those areas had nickel-mines, the only valuable ore Finns had, and that was not shipped from Narvik.
-Other than that, these docs are fine and well made.
The territories Hitler annexed/conquered can be considered part of the 3rd Reich, atleast all the territories that produced stuff for the german army (France,Tsekoslovakia,Norway and Greece to name few)
At 3:52 is that a joke or what? Slovakia was NEVER part of the 3rd Reich. This is desinformation. Tiso lead the independent Slovakia who were a puppet of the germans.
It was "independent" and it was not annexed to the Reich. The animation shows that it became a part of the Reich like Austria, Bohemia, Sudetenland, Morovia. But truly it was not! Sorry but this is desinformation. Or all books what i read are not telling the truth. Greetings!
As far as i know Czech Morovia was a protectorate like occupied Poland. I know that Slovakia became and independent state so Hungary was no allowed to get that territory back. We only got a small stripe in the south what was an ethnic border with 84% hungarians.
Stalin got what he wanted in the end

"had highest kills as pilots"
How many pilots did they have who had over 100 aerial victories? Germany had 105. Poland had?
aaKonda 2 years ago
The Polish began WW 2 with 435 aircraft.
They lost 327.
The Germans began the invasion of Poland with 2085 planes.
They lost 564.
That gives Poland an almost 2:1 kill/death ratio while being outnumbered almost 5:1 in September 1939.
Also note that the PZL P.11 was a bit inferior to the Me 109.
In other words, I'd say they collectively outflied the Germans by a huge margin, but individually Germans had far better aces.
TygrysBengalski 2 years ago
"The Luftwaffe lost, to all operational causes, 285 aircraft, with 279 more damaged, while the Poles lost 333 aircraft."
-Overy, Richard J., The Air War: 1939-1945,1980. p28
And German losses also take account all the losses suffered by AA-guns and so on. Not only the fighters, but the slow moving bombers.

One must never confuse a national government with their respective populations. They are in fact mutually exclusive.
A coincidence sometimes occurs wherein the national leadership and the people agree at precisely the right moment.
Finland is a prime example of that coincidence,...The Russians encountered a "perfect storm" of resistance.
There's a lesson here somewhere.

But some volunteered, around 10.000 swedish men came to help finland which is 1/30 of your soldiers. Sweden also had some airplanes with swedish pilots flying which did a huge difference believe it or not.

@hunt801 Mannerheim was bad leader. Our generals and soldiers did the dirty job, not Mannerheim.

The mines is in Sweden! And the Speaker says: "Transported from the mines of northern sweden."
But they have placed the mines on the map in Finland?? haha!

hehe yea its pretty weird because you can clearly see the border betwene Sweden and Finland and if that werent enough Finland is more darker green in that map then Sweden.. So its weird that the person who have made the map still puts the mines in Finland and not Sweden

Well Denmark had a neutrality defence...
We were poorly equipped, (No amour, no fighter planes - bombers) but the plan was to remain neutral like in WWI...

Thank you once again GD, haven't seen this episode in along time!

QuickSixx 2 years ago
You can call it what you want, run by what you want. However, Hitler controlled it.
HoustonGD 2 years ago
It was "independent" and it was not annexed to the Reich. The animation shows that it became a part of the Reich like Austria, Bohemia, Sudetenland, Morovia. But truly it was not! Sorry but this is desinformation. Or all books what i read are not telling the truth. Greetings!

It pretty much was a protectorate like kind of like Egypt under the power of GB.
HoustonGD 2 years ago
As far as i know Czech Morovia was a protectorate like occupied Poland. I know that Slovakia became and independent state so Hungary was no allowed to get that territory back. We only got a small stripe in the south what was an ethnic border with 84% hungarians.
