When I hear Tebaldi sing Mimi, there is no one else who can sing this role, I don't care if it is Callas, Scotto, nobody dead or alive can sing this role like her.
She is the greatest in the whole world and history, and I must confess that she made me cry when i listened un bel di vedremo from Madame buterfly in her voice... Just she made you cry, even when you don't understand the lyric...jejeje
For me Tebaldi was the quintessential Puccini singer; there are so many phrases that I simply cannot hear any other way then the way she delivered them. Minnie was her supreme achievement, and also Puccini's.
My favorite recording of Boheme is Tebladi, Bergonzi, d'Angelo and Bastianini. I don't think there is one part I don't like! Her rendition of this aria on that recording will make even another soprano cry!
Tebaldi is for me the only Mimi. I first saw her in the role more than fifty years ago and no one else has ever come close. Such beautiful singing and such great expression.
this is excellent- very similar to Freni in terms of expression and phrasing. As far as which is better, it would depend on which voice you prefer. They are both amazing
I love the Teabldo Boheme but still rate the De Los Angleles Bjorling and Merrill recording as the best all round. I just keep going back to it, though i must admit that part of the reason why is Bjorling,
I don't know why people gave manumaltes the thumbs down...De Los Angeles recording is considered the classic by many. Tebaldi's rendition is also quite fine.
Caballe was a lovely Mimi on recording- similar to De Los Angeles in approach. I don't think she was as effective dramatically as Tebaldi or Freni. I prefer her as Liu in Turandot, and definitely her Norma.
Tebaldi was the best Mimì ever, indeed! Freni and Sayão are in a close second place, but Tebaldi is supreme in this role... She simply had everything: the warm and musical phrasing, the expressivity, the vocal beauty, the emotion, the delicacy! ;-)

Tebaldi is great as Mimi - very touching and so feminie - the most sumptuous in opera, and
Caballe is the other one. Tebaldi has a warmer tone and better legato.

First Tebaldi, then Freni - 2 Mimi's for all time. No one will ever sing like this again.
