I loved this programme. Was 14 when the first season aired. I supported the team 'The Civil Servants' because their captain Mary McEnhill was a babe. Was absolutely gutted when they lost the final because their long word containing the three letters was disqualified for highly questionable reasons.
@abhard6 - yes olive she was the old headmistress type tight oulled back grey hair - i do recall seeing her on 15-1 but she didnt do terrificly well bizarrely enough - well remembered !!
''POT POURRI'', that's right, glad I'm not the only one to remember that one! Weird or what?
I think I remember Masterteam being on in the early evening slot just after CBBC and also things like Rolf Harris' Cartoon Time and The Flintstones around about that time too...
...then a certain cheap Aussie soap came in to fill the slot and the rest is TV history :)
Hailing from Hull I can categorically say that this programme will in my mind forever be remembered for those Good Guessers. What a name for a team that was...and they sure did help to put Hull on the map...at least for a few weeks anyway!
All I remember about this show was one guy who always seemed to be on it described himself as a 'house husband'. Don't think I'd heard the term before that.
I was thinking about this Olive woman yesterday - I loved Masterteam, my nan was called Olive and died just before this series, I remembered her scoring about 20 points in the first round and breaking the record.
I was a contestant on this in 1986, as a member of The Bakery (with my wife and brother). We lost! The show was recorded in the Greenwood Theatre, near London Bridge station. The winning teams were Warrington Sports Club (1985, featuring the legendary Olive), The Antrim Coasters (1996), and Carrick Plus One (1987). The show's time slot was then given to Neighbours, sadly.
We lost to the Stan Graham Fan Club, who eventually reached the semi-finals, where they lost to The Good Guessers from Hull. The series was won by the very impressive Antrim Coasters.
No. The rounds were Team Challenge (on the buzzer), a spotlight round (individuals choosing questions from a list of topics), a round where teams had to make the longest word including a group of three letters to be spread throughout the word, and starting with the first letter (eg NEK could give NECKLACES), and It's All Yours, where each team in turn has to answer a series of questions together.
I reckon the show u r thinking of is FIRST CLASS - which was two teams of three kids representing their schools and hosted by Debbie 'Mrs Paul Coia' Greenwood. And a fine show it was as well, just like Masterteam
Anyone remember BBC First Class with Debbie Greenwood? Please upload if you have it.

Sure that was this one or her other 'daytime' quiz that only lasted one season, 'Matchpoint'?
Littleswamp1 3 years ago
If I remember rightly, matchpoint was somewhat bizzarley set in the middle of a tennis court?

I never forget there was a woman on this called Olive Behan who seemed to know the answer to everything.

I remember her too... She always introduced herself as "Olive Behan, peripatetic remedial teacher!"

My mum knew Olive Behan. Mike S.

Does anyone remember The Civil Servants who lost to Olive's team in the final? They were called Mary, Bob and Gavin.

@richardsweden
I can remember seeing her on a couple of other quiz shows around the same time.
Makes me laugh how Angela Rippon is twiddling her thumbs as the theme music is playing.
Not sure if she is doing it in time to the rhythm or if she's just bored by the whole thing.

This theme was one of the best TV themes the BBC did. Good to see it again.

The in-game music was good too, as I recall. I guess someone in the Radiophonic Workshop was let loose with a Fairlight!
Would like to see a complete episode of this programme again.
