Great drummer! What I love most about him is that he's perfect for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has a very subdued style, playing just enough that it grooves but not much over that - you'd be hard pressed to find a note excess in most Peppers songs. Very few drummers are both musical and technical like he is. I don't think they would be as successful with another drummer (also true for Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.)
neil peart is a good drummer, with out a doubt, he is sick, but if you read i what i wrote properly you would realise i said he is PROBABLY the best drummer.
and for your infomation, i do no alot about drummers.
Chad Smith will never be and never will be and never was close to being the BEST DRUMMER! He is impressive and is better a lot of other drummers, but you gotta know what his competition is! John Bonham, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer, Ringo Starr, Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Ginger Baker, Hal Blaine, Danny Carey, Earl Palmer, Dave Lombardo, etc. I can go on and on with rock drummers that were better than Chad Smith! phelepone is right, except that from a "technical" standpoint he is incredible as well. While the whole solo wasn't Quarter-note triplets in the feet over top of buzzed five-lets at 250 beats a minutes, it demontrates how solid of a player he is. It also shows that showmanship doesn't have to be in stick flips and cross-overs.
he's about as basic as they come. He's all singles with simple fills. There's plenty of better funk drummers. He's a ROCK drummer in a funky band, which is only funky because of flea. He's overrated.

I agree with you,83out. He hardly ever does rudiment patterns. I am not impressed. I have seen RHC live. Chad performed a 15 minute drum solo. It was all basic 4/4 straight rhythms. He dropped his sticks @ 5 times. You can tell he doesn't practice much. He's getting paid, bottom line. He even said he was an average pocket drummer that gets paid to do what he loves to do. I just don't agree with all the comments about Chad being one of the best modern drummers. Sorry. He's a good showman and fun.

Great drummer! What I love most about him is that he's perfect for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has a very subdued style, playing just enough that it grooves but not much over that - you'd be hard pressed to find a note excess in most Peppers songs. Very few drummers are both musical and technical like he is. I don't think they would be as successful with another drummer (also true for Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc.)

neil peart is a good drummer, with out a doubt, he is sick, but if you read i what i wrote properly you would realise i said he is PROBABLY the best drummer.

Chad Smith will never be and never will be and never was close to being the BEST DRUMMER! He is impressive and is better a lot of other drummers, but you gotta know what his competition is! John Bonham, Keith Moon, Carl Palmer, Ringo Starr, Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Ginger Baker, Hal Blaine, Danny Carey, Earl Palmer, Dave Lombardo, etc. I can go on and on with rock drummers that were better than Chad Smith! Thank YOU!

phelepone is right, except that from a "technical" standpoint he is incredible as well. While the whole solo wasn't Quarter-note triplets in the feet over top of buzzed five-lets at 250 beats a minutes, it demontrates how solid of a player he is. It also shows that showmanship doesn't have to be in stick flips and cross-overs.

he's about as basic as they come. He's all singles with simple fills. There's plenty of better funk drummers. He's a ROCK drummer in a funky band, which is only funky because of flea. He's overrated.

His sound is amazing. In my opinion he is the best rock drummer since Bonzo. (a few exceptions maybe, Ian Paice etc.) But don't give me that Portnoy, Joel Jordison vs. shit, let alone all the other Red Hot drummers.

Someone said he was doing 32nd notes with his right hand at the start? Well its not that impressive, i cant do it. You wanna see fast drumming? look up Johnny Rabb. I must admit Chad is my 3rd favorite drummer, 2nd goes to Dennis Chambers, 1st goes to Bernard Purdie. They are all great!!

Insults doesn't make your point. Chad Smith rocks? I agree, but he has no rudiment skills. He rocks all his beats with 4/4 beats w/ shuffles. D. H. Peligro was better. Jack Irons was pretty good. Matter of fact he would still be playing if Hillel Slovak didn't die. That brings me to Cliff Martinez, he didn't last long during all the legal recording crap. As you can see, Chad Smith nothing more then an auditioned replacement drummer. Anthony liked Chad's stubbornness. He didn't cut his hair.Fact.

I agree with you,83out. He hardly ever does rudiment patterns. I am not impressed. I have seen RHC live. Chad performed a 15 minute drum solo. It was all basic 4/4 straight rhythms. He dropped his sticks @ 5 times. You can tell he doesn't practice much. He's getting paid, bottom line. He even said he was an average pocket drummer that gets paid to do what he loves to do. I just don't agree with all the comments about Chad being one of the best modern drummers. Sorry. He's a good showman and fun.

Well from what I have heard from "Red Hot chili Peppers" He has a nice solid rock/pop feel.
Having endorsements/money/modern drummer covers, means nothing about technical prowess, or innovation to an instrument. But it would be intresting seeing Chad smith do something different, Maybe a Jazz/rock fusion band?
