  • only a woman like Oprah could have pulled this off - a legend among legends! Wish I was there , if only to be a waitress - awesome!

  • Some artist were invited they just probably couldn't make it.

  • WOw whitney is not there is anyone upset about this?????

  • HOW ABOUT THIS SWAP ..... Indie Arie INSTEAD of Ashanti....... WHO'S FEELIN ME???

  • @jayson1039 i agree

  • Stunning!

  • After all these years I am still amazed and just impressed THANK you Oprah and youtube for keeping a dream going this is what life is about...I can only say THANK YOU! once more

  • My eyes watered just looking at all these beautiful faces, the video just came on..!

  • I think Anita Baker should have been there... IJS!!!

  • After the weekend event, I saw a picture of the group on Oprah's website and I thought I saw Aretha Franklin on the picture. Why wasn't Aretha there?

  • BEYONCEEEEEEEEE????????????????????

  • I noticed Michelle Obama lol who woulda known

  • Phyllcia can speak her ass off...i can listen to her allllll day.

  • apparently she had invited alot more, but they all couldn't make it..but we'd trade any of the ones who didn't make it instead of ashanti

  • i never understood why ashanti was there lol.

  • Where was Beyonce? Why do I get the feeling the black women in the industry don't like her much.

  • I don't see Queen Latifah either :(

  • We're missing Whoopi Goldberg, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Lauryn Hill, Eartha Kitt, Vanessa L. Williams and Beyonce

  • @emmanuel11246 agreed

  • Where's Aretha and Whoopi???

  • halle berry :)

  • Amazing stuff! how informative and inspirational

  • Leontyne Price saying "What's happening, child?" actually makes my life 100x better

  • this is the most pretentious thing ive ever witnessed

  • @NWDC1 yes, it is unfortunately. I mean I understand oprahs poitn in that hollywood producers would never put on an event for black women like this, but this is wayyyyyy over the top. and what about black male entertainers that paved the way.

  • Oh My God! Thank you Oprah for your unselfish love. You all are amazing women. You make me proud to spell my name, W-O-M-A-N !!!

  • This just fills my heart up EVERY TIME I watch this!!

  • This is so amazing. I m lil bit shocked why Aretha Franklin The Queen wasnt there..she is considered to be the greatest female singer ever. Whitney Houston too. She is The Voice woman who change music and she is considered to be the most influential female singer in past 25 years. Or Whoopi Goldberg she created history. I start to cry when I saw Leontyne Price. As young op. singer she is so important to me, she and Joan Sutherland have the most beautiful voices ever existed. God Bless.

  • @ArchiducDeBelgrade It's very possible all those other woman were invited, they may not have been able to go for health reason or other obligations. Oprah's a perfectionist, I'm sure she didn't leave them out.

  • Who is that young girl with the blonde hair.

  • Like I've said before, if I could have just been a fly on the wall, I would've been happy

  • Alicia is adorable lol "woowww Oprah has a trolley!"

  • Alicia is adorable lol "woowww Oprah has a trolley!"

  • I'm dehydrated from crying.... watching this..

  • i am tearing up watching this because i love how oprah sets out to show what class really is and how we roll when we are doing our best

  • its a lot of money in that room

  • Oprah is an extraordinary woman!!

  • wasnt beyonce invited?

  • @MissCookiedough27 No.. i suppose beyonce hardly had a massive status in 2005, she'd only done one solo album by that time, Ashanti had done 2 or 3... and i mean look at the other 'young uns' - Mariah, Janet, Mary J & Chaka Khan- hardly young but had longevity x

  • what year was this in ??? wtf miss obma was there

  • that poem got me teary eyed!!! wow! =) what a blessing!

  • No offense but how did Ashanti of all people get an invite.

  • @CMHbywayofNC Haaaaaaaaaa!! I almost fell outta my chair when I read you comment!!

  • @CMHbywayofNC Exactly, Wouldn't U Expect Whitney To Get One?

  • @CMHbywayofNC AGREEED. Her career ending around this time smh

  • @CMHbywayofNC where was whitney!. I know she had problems but She was a singing Legend wth. poor whitney

  • Didn't know Michelle Obama was there too :) But how sad a misunderstanding meant Whoopi wasn't there :(

  • Comment removed

  • mary j blige is the realist

  • lol @ Oprah's backyard...

  • Being a black woman in America is such a heavy cross to bear because society is constantly putting us down and in some sad cases our men are helping them put us down. I am very grateful that there are black women celebrating one another and expressing thanks to the ones who had to face some of the most unethical, spirit breaking injustices here. Thank you sista's!!!! Black don't crack

  • @bronZeamaZon So true..i'm a black man and I put black women on a pedistal who work hard, stand out and do what they have to do to make it. My father was not around, but THANK GOD for the strong group of black women (my mother, grandmother, aunts and cousins) who helped me be the man that I am today. My mother put 3 boys through college (one with a PHD), never been to the jailhouse or cemetary behind neither one of us. So I say to you sista, STAY STRONG regardless of how society portrays you.

  • Janet looked stunning...I bet it was amazing being in the presence of beautiful, legendary women

  • Hearing mary j blidge say " they saved my life" touch something so deep for me. In that moment i could feel the pain she mustve have been through. There's no faking that.

  • wow!! brandy was there but no Monica!!!??? odd

  • this is embarrassing. Oprah was like " I'll invite all the bitches to a big party to show off my new house". Those tears were so TV tears

  • @ksionc100 Oh please! She'd been had that house, cut it out.

  • Where was Whoopi , Aretha and Lena Horne?

  • @bbath7 idk about Aretha and Lena Horne, but Whoopi and Oprah were mad at each other

  • I CRY EVERTIME I SEE THIS!

  • This is a pinnacle hallmark of contemporary history. Thanks Oprah. Thank all of you.

  • Janet is so amazing. She opened up so many doors for black people

  • @cavstony yes indeed!!

  • omg this is beautiful the combination of all these strong willed talented beautiful women come together..some of the combinations i would've never imaged like mary j. blidge and natalie cole or alicia keys and halle berry talking.. angela basset and brandy..like come on they are so different with there own styles and backgorunds and to come together and be as one and embrace eachother's beauty and talent can make me shiver.. this is the most emotional video i have ever seen!!

  • so brilliant seeing diana and tina sat together, then to the side, mariah and janet sat together... oprah knew what she was doing! those divas sat nxt to eachother how brilliant!

  • Janet looks amazing

  • love it was this her first ball

  • omg michelle obama was there, wow oprah knew her way before then, she wasn't really famous, she was just i guess a wife os a lawyer or senator, who knew that she will be the first Black first lady wooooh that was deep.

  • Who is the lady that Iman is hugging. Is it Suzanne de Passe?

  • @antigoniem06 yes.

  • @lt7676 thx.

  • @antigoniem06 Yes, it is.

  • @lovewalk101 thx.

  • Know what? not too long after this, Mrs king/Dr. Martin Luther Kings wife passed away...I was happy that she was able to attend this and be celebrated.

  • Deos anyone know what song Nancy Wilson is singing. Cheers.

  • @LordViczerez A song for you

  • @antigoniem06 Cheers.

  • To add onto what Gayle said: Everybody in this room is important, everybody in this room HAS CLASS. It wasn't just a bunch of ghetto women arguing and fighting like most black women are portrayed.

  • Michelle Obama looked really nice

  • Goodness, Halle Berry is just stunning.

  • God Bless you for posting this! I remember the very night this aired, and I was unable to make it home in time to watch - Thank you!!!!

  • It's really a good thing these extraordinary women got the tribute then becuase sadly, we have lost a number of the legends, some of them not so long after the celebration (coretta scott king passed away less that 7 months after the event). so god bless u oprah for blessing these deserving women with a thank you like no other.

  • Alicia said it best. These women are the epitome of the strength of African American women.... and it is that strength that gives me, even being a man, the strength to carry on each day. I may not be perfect, I may not be right about a lot of things, but one thing for sure, we all have examples to live by.

  • Bloodly brilliant.......... LOVE LOVE LOVE IT

    Teri

  • I think it would have really been the icing on the cake if Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston was there. I think Whitney was going through her habit at the time..I dont know about Queen Latifah but she definately represents the youngins of today. I see my life as sucessfull being college educated, good job, and good morals and a good healthy god fearing man. I had no father to raise me but I had some STRONG black women to raise me to be who I am...and I THANK GOD for them....Thank you Oprah.

  • @Blakmajik78 yeah I agree. That's when Whitney was going through her habit. if she wasn't I know that she defiantly would've been there

  • I mean, how often do you get the chance to meet one of the elite sopranos of the last century?...come on, now. I wouldve been speechless in the presence of Leontyne Price. in my mind, there's her and the everybody else falls in line behind her and Callas. Just my opinion.

  • I agree, Leontyne Price would've caused me to be utterly speechless and a fool, she. is. amazing!
