Most menial jobs make only that in one year, that's a lot to spend on a hobby. Plus Scarlet and Epic are coming out this year, complete modularity will make the wait worth while.
entry level scarlet (brain only) w/ 2/3 sensor will start at $2500. Now that's affordable or you could get the complete kit Scarlet 2/3 w/ 8x fixed zoom for $3700. Thats 3K imagery at average 120fps REDCODE at affordable prices. Take that Canon, Panasonic or Sony!
Indeed! Now I haven't looked into this kit you're referring to, but if you're buying the 2/3 sensor for $2,500 you'll still need to get a REDmote, I/O module, viewfinder/LCD, SSD drive, and if you're serious about cinematography you'll need all of the best lenses.. if the optics are comparable to SLR cameras you can forget about that 8x fixed lens for sure.
The whole shebang is going to pass $10,000 easily just to get you started.
right.. if you're serious. Its modular at least so you could upgrade it eventually. I probably would get an adapter to use with lenses I already own. But seriously, I cant think of anything better (at 3K res) at this price. And the Scarlet 8x fixed is suppose to be a complete package (lens + viewfinder). So its a start.
Heck yeah, I've got a few thousand invested in Nikon bayonet mount lenses so the adapter would be pretty awesome and save some serious coin.. though the one DX lens I have wouldn't be worth a damn since it vignettes the image down to the APS-C crop size..
No biggie since I don't really like that lens anyhow, it's the 18-105 that comes kit with the D90. It works for snapshots and family type stuff, but not too good for professional quality work.
Do you have to know all the lenses and be able to reload a film camra to be a director? not a DOP/DP, just a director..
