@bowser5069 This guitar solo is harsher than you're used to. The sound quality is great, these guys are professionals; it's just that the effects used are slightly grating on the ear -- on purpose. Listen to the "raven" part of "Echoes" by Pink Floyd; it's got that same harsh quality, and is one of the most popular songs of its era period.
Anyone know how he gets his sound? I'v tried ring mod, flanger, phaser, fuzz distortion in different combinations, can't get anywhere near the sound. Maybe i'll just have to buy a serious ring mod and lock myself in my room for a day.
I saw this live night and I hate to say something so corny, but it was life changing. The noise solo was as mind altering as the first time I smoked pot, and that's not hyperbole. Visionary music.
There's a picture somewhere online of Kurihara's board. He uses a ZVex Fuzz Factory, a Wattson SuperFuzz, a Fulltone Ultimate Octave fuzz, and atleast one other lesser known fuzz box.
Michio Kurihara's solo just makes me want to melt away into a ball of static. It's just so damn electrifying and intense, but at the same time it feels controlled... What a genius.
i have a simple setup, and i have a DS-1 running as my distortion. Right after it, I have the Boss Equalizer. Im not saying this is his setup, but I have my EQ right after the distortion and I can get this solo tone. Its fucking great!
too bad that people haven't invented a giant network of all the computers in the world. the lyrics would probably be there. oh wait, they have. it's called the internet *slaps own head* hello! i am such a dunce. Try looking in Metal Archives.
I just saw Boris with Michio last night in Milwaukee and it was fluppin incredible. Michio's solo during this song just melted the crowd's faces. He was absolutely the star of the set. It took me back to when I first got lost in Pink Floyd's soundscapes 25 years ago. Watching him play the guitar and coax all that beautiful ambient noise out of his SG was sublime!
yeah, i do happen to know what the nomenclature means.(and i wouldn't say wata does it) to slightly older music afficienados like me, it also has a negative connotation- namely of rote expertise and shit that's just scales played as fast as possible. you end up with nonsense like yngwie who plays at the same speed all the time, and in the same key. and sorry to inform you, but most geeks who are into shredding diss hendrix for not playing fast enough.
i don't know that there are 'official' according to hoyle definitions of what separates speed, neoclassical, and shred. back when i took lessons, a lot of the teachers used those terms as interchangable. i wasn't inferring anything about you at all about you.
however, the sheer number of comments you attach to boris videos, when you clearly hate them is a little creepy and probably time wasted. i won't reply to anymore of your comments- you 'win'.
@PaleandSleepDeprived Guitar is meant to be played, not raped. Songwriting should come before showing off. Not that a typical metal fan would know that.
Different ears, then, I suppose. I mean, I enjoy A LOT of music, Boris just happens to be in there too. For you, it isn't. We seem to have similar taste otherwise. Different ears. *shrug*
its laughably pathetic hearing all these otaku gushing over the moderately attractive chick in the band, even more so when they complement her playing
she garners most of th attention, which isnt fair they have a barely passable drummer and a generic vocalist
though, by far the best thing about this band is that they are unpopular as shit over here
I mean, if you listen to Electric Wizard and Kyuss, I don't see what's so hard to get into Boris. Maybe listening to Akuma No Uta and Pink would help get into them. I mean, Rainbow, Flood, Feedbacker, etc. aren't the most accessible.
I dunno, I adore Kyuss, Electric Wizard, and Sleep, but I also adore Boris. I dunno, maybe I'm a bit more versatile in taste. Kyuss' Welcome to the Sky Valley is musical PERFECTION. \m/
@PaleandSleepDeprived i must say i really enjoyed reading your comments up untill here(yeah, i read it the wrong way round) but seriously; god bless the states and our higher standards?

daakins 2 years ago
If you want proper Kurihara tone, you gotta have a fuzz. A DS-1 can get you in the territory but Kurihara is a fuzz god
Rambo29 2 years ago
putt an equalizer pedal with a distortion and you can get this sound. just experiment with it
daakins 2 years ago
Oh I'm sure you can, but the DS-1 is not something thats commonly used for fuzz tones.
Rambo29 2 years ago
I did exactly that, its true. Same sound. Had an old peavey-amp at the time too. Now i use vox.

if youre confused as to what they mean
dont pretend you have any knowledge to impart to me
because a tenuous grasp of the concepts is obvious
the styles share a common root and a few key aspects but they are by no means interchangable
second
if you note all the original posts are around the same time
i had heard of them and decided to check all their vids out
it so happened that i didnt like any of them at all
now isnt that my place to decide whether or not i like a band?

mikebott 3 years ago

do you know what shred guitar even is?
its players like zakk wylde jimi hendrix and satriani
who mix technical playing and strange guitar tricks and noises like all sorts of harmonics and whammy dives/pitch modulations
this wata character does not fall into this catagory
she makes noise, but shred she does not
PaleandSleepDeprived 3 years ago

weak playing weak melodies disjointed sound and laughable solos

PaleandSleepDeprived 3 years ago
Have you seen them live?
redroom 3 years ago
hell no
im sure theres the whole "experience" to it
but im not paying to subject myself to painfully simple/generic music played at a ridiculous volume to feel "THE ESSENCE OF THE NOTES"
its poorly played and makes for uncomfortable listening
theres a reason they crank their amps up
the music just isnt very good
the viscerality of the experience stems from the volume, not the music
might as well listen to jets taking off
