Pawing is also a way for cats to mark their territory. The scent glands on the underside of their paws release small amounts of scent onto the person or object being pawed, marking it as "theirs" in the same way they would urinate to mark their territory.

Ok. I was was just doing a version of the 1980's cartoon G.I. Joe "Now you know and knowing is half the battle". I just assume everybody is in the same dorky stuff I am into.
The real reason why all cats do this "massage" is that kittens need to do this on their mother's breasts in order to stimulate the secretion of milk. Even when kittens grow up, they may not totally get rid of this "habit" and will still "mechanically" do the same thing on any surface which is soft, e.g. a piece of towel or cloth. It is so funny.

When cat's do this, it is a throwback to there kitten hood. This is what they use to do to get more milk from the teat of the mother. That use to be very relaxing to a kitten. So...when the cat is relaxed or sleepy, he will do this, because he associates it with being relaxed. They will do this to anything and anyone. Most of the time they do it to pillows or sheets though.
a cat i had when i was really young, would always get on your lap and do that.. hahaha he was teh coolest cat. so that leads me to believe that is his reincarnation.
dude.. this is the basic "milk drinking" move of a cat.. they are doing this to their mothers boobs to get some milk out.. and this cat is a little one so this isnt that amazing =) btw cats do this to humans too, usually when they are little =)
