  • The first time I heard this song I was driving on Winchester St. in Keene NH. That must have been 92 or 93. It was on an alt rock station, the call letters of which I have forgotten since. It sent chills down my spine. I must have heard the song thousands of times since. Still get chills. My mind also goes right back to that area, which I have long since left, making me another statistic in those who left small towns--or small cities which Keene is--for South Florida.

  • ...memories like fingerprints are slowly raising.....One the best lines ever.

  • Nicely done...

  • I just wanna scream HELLO! Pearl Jam at the apex of creativity.

  • This so reminds me of my hometown, population 600. There was one general store run by an elderly woman for 50+ years. They don't accept credit cards, but you can put stuff on your bill.

  • I love this song.

  • I'm still here. There are times I question why? It's home.

  • I have always loved this song

  • make a bad day go away.. rough times = pearl jam= happy and stoned

  • fits perfectly in the Rescue Me commercial, which is where i heard it for the first time

  • so few views... truly a piece for the ages

  • Very nice imagery with this great song.

  • I like this song, but i feel some kind of REM influence.......

  • Thanks man, great sound quality (unlike other postings)

  • i cant put into words how much i love this song and the video gives us nostalgia that stretches back to before most of us were even born great song great video pearl jam will have their place in the HOF soon enough

  • Eddie is a god, man I wanna see them again!

  • Awesome Eddie at his finest a truly touching balad

  • I went into a store once out in the middle of nowhere, and there was an elderly woman behind the counter. She was scared because there were some tough kids in there and they were giving her a hard time. I came in just at the right time and they left. She lived all by herself in a room in the back. Very isolated and vulnerable, she was. I felt extremely sorry for her. That's my sad story.

  • I remmember watching this video back in 2007 and thinking I would find love one day and be happy..now im watching it in 2011 thinking the same thing lol.

  • Probably the best song ever created.

  • I love the 90's.

  • Shame it took almost 20 years for anyone to pay attention to such a beautiful song - Better late than never, I guess.

  • Rescue Me brought me here

  • This was one of the best bands from any era!!

  • It's funny how this song's meaning is exactly how I feel when I hear it. Takes me back.

  • Thumbs up if you Love and miss your grandparents!!

  • This is my favorite song to listen to when im relaxed and care free...

  • This is probably my all time favorite Pearl Jam song. It is so... Unique. That's a good word for it. The images in this video really fit the song. Great video.

  • When I first heard "Time" by Pink Floyd, I thought that it perfectly summed up the idea that this song has - how things decay and change and fade over time. This is like "Time" except with the more magnificent vocals of Eddie Vedder rather than the beauty of David Gilmour's guitar. Both are synonymous to the same idea, which make them both such great songs.

  • thumbs up if your're here because of the rescue me trailer

  • The kid at 3:06 was smokin a philly blunt.....

  • 9 people suck.

  • rescue me, final season.

  • @MoisheKapoyr for me, this song has become synonymous with that show : )

  • @182bha pretty good show, and the song fits well too

  • Brilliant song off an awesome album, always one of their best. Not much of a fan after Vs., I admit though.

  • I am not from a "small town" in this sense, but this is a great song. I live outside of Buffalo, NY ... a once major US city. I have also driven all over the country and seen a lot of small towns dying. It's very sad what is going on, the way our economy works all of us young people are basically forced to move to a new huge city like NYC or somewhere down south to find a job. I'm afraid the real American identity could be lost in the future to a few select enormous metropolitan areas

  • @rbe6f Unfortunately that's where I see our country headed, too. I go to school in... I guess you could call it a large town in a remote area, but I'm from a suburb of Chicago. And yes, given our economy, neither me nor any of my friends back home are motivated to stay there, although I have fond memories of it. I can relate to this song in a lot of way.

  • @rbe6f our governments way of getting us all in a populated area we are easy targets if we are all together....harder to find us in remote areas.....think about it.....

  • @rbe6f Funny thing about that is that Buffalo/Niagara was once considered to be developed as "Metropolis" by King Camp Giliette (the razor guy) where the entire country would live there and live off the power of the Niagara gorge. The rest of the country would be used to farm. That was around 1900 when Buffalo was one of the largest cities in the country. That would have put an entirely different face on the USA.

  • 9 people must've misclicked. How is it possible to dislike this song?

  • i dislike the 9 dislikes, im on the wrong planet i guess

  • @onewikedfaery. me too, i hate the fact that i'm on the same planet with people who focus on the small percentage of people who clicked dislike.

  • Very sweet

  • Part of my job includes traveling around Texas; I'm always reminded of this song as I drive through many dying small towns. The young people escaped as quickly as they could, while the older residents survive as best they can.

    Very nice slide show.

  • @ChargerRT440 dam thts kind of mind bottling n sad how tht happens, i never tought of things like that

  • @deathjr277 Recently, as I was driving south of Odessa, this came on the radio just as I passed through a town with boarded up & abandoned buildings. Talk about life imitating art.

  • @ChargerRT440 I'm from West Texas, so I get to see alot of the small towns dying as well. Its sad to see, but just driving through them almost takes you back in time. Great song

  • @jeffkeeper01 You're spot on with that! I want to stop to look around & talk with locals about the history; time constraints keep me from always having that luxury though. I was in Monahans not long ago & saw the old abandoned Sunset Motel. I was told it folded after I-20 bypassed it. But that has happened nationwide with the highway system when travelers were diverted & many towns suffered because of it. And yes, a great song.

  • i love this song. thanks.

  • @bmw7798

  • i reckon this song is pretty fukn good i play it when i jst feel like sittn bak and smokn a joint YEABABY!!!

  • THAT SNARE!...

  • @AllISawWasBlack EXACTLY

  • Beautiful imagery to go along with the music. Thank you. Brings back memories of my own life and makes me wonder of a time before my own. Much appreciated.

  • I voted this song... for having the longest title ever~!

  • It's a sign of the quality of Pearl Jams music that this song and others like Black, for example, get regular radio airplay when they were never released as singles. This song reaches into your past no matter where you are from and pulls at your memories of growing up. If you have any ounce of nostalgia, you will understand this song. Eddie Vedder wrote a timeless classic with this song.

  • ..."Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name"... Simple , but truly deep lyrics, poets could not have done better.

  • 8 people never had friends growing up.

  • Very well done. Pictures, mood, song, all fits together.

  • For some reason, this song reminds me of senility--elderly people forgetting their family, friends, loved ones... I don't know why, but that's what this song reminds me of.

    Beautiful song, though.

  • ....And then she sees him, and at first she doesn't even remember who he is, and then she realizes who it is. She's just too embarrassed to say 'hello"

  • Eddie's interpretation-

"It's kind of about a lady, and she's getting on in years, and she's stuck in this small town. Small towns fascinate me: You either struggle like hell to get out, to some people want to stay 'cause then they're the big fish in the small pond, and then others just kind of get stuck there. So here she is working in this little place, and then an old flame comes in, and he's probably driving a nice car and looking kind of sharp—not a fancy car, but he's moved on....

  • This song took Eddie 20 minutes to write when he had slept in the studio and woke up with a guitar next to him. They recorded it that day. A song as good as this should take years to write

  • This song reminds be of a time when people were happy with there lifes,..now its just wars, zionist jews and puppet illuminiti singers.

  • This song almost makes me cry every time I hear it. They opened with it when I seen them live and me and a couple of thousand other fan sung every word. You have no idea what it's like to hear all those people yell "For I'm not my Former"....just an amazing song.

  • I changed by not changing at all...! So beautiful, lyrically and in tone. Genius work, and I'm learning to sing this myself. Vedder forever.

  • I USED TO KNOCK THEM KNOW I SEE MY FOLLY THEY ARE GREAT

  • no problem man, enjoy your first. Had my first PJ at Vancouver BC 2005. Opening show of the 2005 canadian tour! What a mind blowing show to "bust my cherry" as some other PJ fans put it.

  • No other live versions of this song on youtube? I wonder if they play this ong live a lot. It is soooo goood. I was hoping for more than just this version. oh well.

  • The live version from the Live on Two Legs album is awesome.

  • for some reason, the version on my Vs. is just eddie, acoustic guitar. However, they played a version similar to this in Missoula in 2005.

  • one of their bests but doesn't come close to the masterpieces on Ten

small town predicts my fate ..perhaps that what no one wants to see...

  • Wow I love this song, but I have misheard it hundreds of times until my dad corrected me. =) Its kind of odd, because you actually get the meaning of the song when you actually hear the song.

  • I must have listened to this song a hundred times over the years but never really thought about its meaning. It really sums up how I feel when I go back to my hometown. Thanks for enlightening me guy :-)

  • words fail to accurately describe the feeling this song emotes!

  • This song swept me away--the pictures with the video did the same--how classy and beautiful at the same time..

  • this is so fukin damn good .. pearl jam! thanks for 20 yrs of ur music.. u'll remain immortal..

  • Im 37 years old, and used to write for the NME from 1989-1993. I reckon I must have seen over a thousand bands back in those days (paid to do so).

This is the only Pearl Jam song I ever truly dug.
