Check out my homepage for further experiments using laser. There are several easy to do examples to split the beam, modulate on of the two and then recombine them to produce low frequency beats. The magnifying glass makes the laser beam become smaller (smallest at the point where he inserts the match) en becomes wider afterwards. When it hits a wall, the spatial width of the laser beam is too big to do any damage. Basis understanding of how a lens works, folks :)

@ShadowSpeedy7 I think it has to do with the focus of the laser. Whatever that object is that he lights the matches over is marking where the laser's beam is most focused. So since it isn't focused on the wall, it wont burn the wall. Its like focusing the dot of light on a magnifying glass to burn stuff :D

Only that focus can be collimated, if it burns at 5 feet, pointed through a 10x scope it will burn at 50 feet, through a 100x telescope, at 500 feet, i have a 1900mW445, theoreticaly i should be able to light a match at over 1000 feet since it burns at 15. i know it sounds rediculous but its incredibly true and simple, if you have a laser and a pair of binoculars try it.
