Seeing as you have a 55sx, perhaps you can help me with something. I recently acquired a 55sx, but it gives error codes 161 and 163. To repair those errors I need a reference disk which I don't have.
If you have a copy of the reference disk's would you mind sending a copy to me. It would help me out a lot.
Can do but you need to figure out if your dallas runtime chip has ran out of battery power. The battery for cmos on this machine is internal inside the dallas rtc. You can either cut the chip up and find where the battery is (what i did) or replace the chip.
If you are lucky enough to have a dallas rtc chip with power left in it - i can send you the reference disk.
Ahh, memories. My first computer was a 486DX with 4MB of RAM (Packard Bell). I forgot about having to type win and the fantastic "tada" sound :) ... though in the beginning I didn't even have a sound card! Your voice is great, btw :)

Just because he made a video of his old computer? wow dude stop putting down other people because im sure your life isnt any better. Besides YouTube is a place where anyone can put there videos on here about anything they want. That is why they made this site DURRR.
@thecooldude1822 Right, and its obvious by the amount of views that people come on youtube to specificaly see these kind of videos. Its nostalgia, there is a video for the booting up of almost every platform and every OS.
the first version of windows operating system, that was even able to use an internet browser and run the internet period i mean seriously?
One could access google still on this thing.. And some people don't use computers for anything demanding....and this could even meet their typing and printing needs quiet well
Windows 3.1 could indeed meet many people's word processing needs. Not so sure about web browsing. Modern websites/web browsers take a pile of memory. And adobe flash? That thing hogs so much memory. 3.1 could certainly still browse basic sites like wikipedia, but good luck using youtube.
ESDI hard disk, never heard of it and I have been supporting pc's since the early 90's. MFM, RLL, SCSI, IDE... Never heard of esdi, I looked it up and it's pretty good for it's time. MFM was pretty much the early standard. My first hard disk was a 20mb MFM which you had to run debug to lowlevel format!
Low it isn't, it isn't at all. Windows 3.1 uses only 720kB of HDD-space. In the time this computer was made, you weren't able to make a 20mb HDD full.
It's so funny for me to think that Windows 3.1 is actually about 8 months OLDER than me! But what I really wish is that I could've been old enough to remember when Windows 95 was released.
Technically speaking, Vista is more stable than 3.1 or XP. You say Vista is incompatible, but try running Microsoft Word 2007 on Windows 3.1. It's way outdated dude. You couldn't even view this video with Windows 3.1. I know if you really had to make a decision between 3.1 and Vista, you'd choose Vista. C'mon now, lets be real! You're going to have to upgrade sooner or later. In my year of using Vista, only 1 program was incompatible. FTR, I have nothing against XP, I just prefer Vista.
Vista is a copy of a MAC...and a lame one at that. And your wrong in saying Vista is more stable. No way is it! And if I had to upgrade from 3.1 (which i still use and love) I'd go for XP or Debian Linux! Vista is a poor attempt at a 'pwetty looking operwating system'! Many people in the top IT industries mock Vista for its incompatibility and lack of a 'good base system'. How can a computer meant to run on quad core CPU use a base system written for a single core CPU!
I suppose you'll entitled to your own opinion. After reading this comment it's obvious that I can do nothing to change your mind. I could argue that you've probably never used Vista, but then again I've never extensively used Linux and I've never used Windows 3.1. I don't really agree that Vista looks like MAC OS, but then again there's no changing your mind. I don't really mind, nor do I care, what OS you choose to run. It's none of my business anyway. Enjoy 3.1.
I have used Linux and 3.1. I really don't like 3.1 because nothing is compatible with it when I had it, and you can't play most of the modern things, plus, if you think Vista is a copy of Mac, what do you think Linux is, a copy of Mac and Windows. As for the unstable part, I had Vista ever since it came out, without reformatting it. That's the truth, unless you want me to lie.
Ok...you cannot say that 3.1 is incompatible because most modern things wont work. It was made nearly 20 years ago. As for Linux being a copy of a mac. HELLO Mac runs Linux BSD!...'Linux being a copy of Windows'?? Hello Linux invented the GUI! Windows copied the X system GUI.
Well yes, it's a very common and so far the most efficient GUI. A taskbar on the top or bottom, a desktop with icons, and windows to show programs in. wtf where they supposed to use? circles? And yes, of course 3.1 is incompatible because it's old. That's the point him and I are trying to make. IT'S OLD!!! THROW IT OUT!!! Upgrade to XP, Vista, Linux or even Mac OS X. Hell, even Win2000 is better.
I got Vista and I think that if ur gonna use it on your home desktop, i think is great cause of the visuals. Excluding that, to me is the same to XP. But if u use it at work, it would be better to use XP cause it's more stable
Well there are some little differences, like the file system has slightly changed. In XP, all your miles were under "My Documents," regardless if it was a document, jpeg, mp3 or whatever. But yeah, they're pretty similar. But if you think about it, isn't Windows XP just Windows 2000 with a pretty face? They came out only a year apart, they couldn't have made THAT many changes, ya know? So I think people who say Vista is XP with a pretty face hypocrites.
U should do a mem check. I have had vista for over a month and it only got a bsod once. For some reason Vista almost always gets a bsod in the first week and then after that ur normally fine. If ur hardware is of course.
I have XP...I had Vista(I threw it out). I have 98,95, 3.1 and UBUNTU and PC-BSD Linux!
Window the most efficient GUI? Hello do you live in a cage with limited access to the Internet to post ridiculously stupid comments? The X system has the most efficient GUI.
Fucking Hell man....the Atari ST GEM had a more efficient GUI than windows. Oh and thats another thing. I also have GEM on my computer!
You spent $150 - $250 on Vista and threw it put? Wow, I guess people are rich these days. If you have a decent computer, then Vista really is a great OS. If not, then you're going to have a horrible experience. I'd suggest at least 2GB of RAM. And what is the X system? Isn't that Linux? If so, then it's still the same GUI, just the taskbar is at the top. Besides having Ubuntu, I don't see how you can survive using such outdated OSs.'
I agree. X-window isn't as good as Windows in my oppinion. And Vista is great with a good computer. However, I use Vista on my laptop (Dell Inspiron, minimum performance) with 1GB ram and 1.8 ghz celeron and Vista works great on it. And I think that Vista OEM (not sure which version) is about $90. At least that is wat I heard.
uhm.. nope.. XP supports up to 2Gigs RAM... Vista up to 4GB... there already are games that require 2GB, which means ur XP will nearly die when running it ^^
Vista does not make you more protected. You need internet virus protection to be protected. If you have a vista computer without virus protection, it isn't going to "protect itself". Sorry!
I know, the ages when Win95 was ground breaking. Not understanding BSOD (I was 3). Helping mom build it. I loved my little PC. And now I throw those memories away and use the Mac now. LOL
Maybe if you had TONS of RAM in it...it MIGHT go to the setup screen...just think of it though...how fast is the processor on this computer? and 20MB hard drive? omg...today we have like 500 GB hard drives that people fill up in an instant! (I have a 175 GB HD and only have used 70 Gigs of it.)
I had the exact same model -- IBM PS/2 with I think only 3MB RAM and a 40MB hard drive and a color monitor. Didn't have a sound card though ;) The things we take for granted nowadays...
Yes i know you can but because I have dos games on here that run in pure dos mode only, I prefer it stopping at a comand prompt, not automatically starting windows.
So remember Himem.sys loading up. I still remember my grandpa's 486dx and loading Windows 3.1 on it for the first time, and then Windows 95, which ran like shite.
Ahhh.. memories. We used to have a 286, which ran DR-DOS.
Video quality wasnt that bad, i could see what was on the screen and thats what counts isnt it? All in all its a good way to bring back old memories, im 17 years old now and i remeber having windows 3.1 on my first computer that my parents bought for 3000 dollars!
We Had Tanks on it, and it was the best, Great Video
Trust me, you can. I don't know how but you can select it on one option somewhere - it could have been alienware i'm not too sure but Dell owns alienware so oh well.
My first video machine was the infamous Atari 2600, but my first proper computer was the Zx Spectrum 128K+2A, pc compatibles didnt come into the scene til years later, and i still prefer amiga workbench over windows :D

Great little system!
I have one under my desk right now.
16 megs ram, OS/2 2.1, microchannel network....Great to see people still using these systems.

OS/2 is better than windows. so it is good that you've come to the light side of the force. Windows is the dark side of the format

I had the exact same model -- IBM PS/2 with I think only 3MB RAM and a 40MB hard drive and a color monitor. Didn't have a sound card though ;) The things we take for granted nowadays...

lol, memories. I had exactly the same monitor, owned a old 286 though which couldnt run windows.
discostew1983 4 years ago
hey retard, u can edit the autoexec.bat file to automatically type in win for you.
finalfantasyXyuna 4 years ago
Yes i know you can but because I have dos games on here that run in pure dos mode only, I prefer it stopping at a comand prompt, not automatically starting windows.

omg it took about 1:30 to load up windows 3.1 lol

So remember Himem.sys loading up. I still remember my grandpa's 486dx and loading Windows 3.1 on it for the first time, and then Windows 95, which ran like shite.
Ahhh.. memories. We used to have a 286, which ran DR-DOS.

Video quality wasnt that bad, i could see what was on the screen and thats what counts isnt it? All in all its a good way to bring back old memories, im 17 years old now and i remeber having windows 3.1 on my first computer that my parents bought for 3000 dollars!
We Had Tanks on it, and it was the best, Great Video

lol wow how things have advanced XD from dell you can get 160GB of RAM :S lol
Javindo 5 years ago
no, no you cant.
waydeewaydee 4 years ago
Trust me, you can. I don't know how but you can select it on one option somewhere - it could have been alienware i'm not too sure but Dell owns alienware so oh well.
Also you can just add external RAM boards?
Javindo 4 years ago
lol that is hard drive space, not RAM... The most RAM you can get on a readily available motherboard is around 64GB.

My first video machine was the infamous Atari 2600, but my first proper computer was the Zx Spectrum 128K+2A, pc compatibles didnt come into the scene til years later, and i still prefer amiga workbench over windows :D
