amazing, simply amazing vocals ! This song should of went to number one world wide, dont ask me why it didnt. Steve was one of the GREATEST VOCALIST rock n roll ever had !
This is one of the best classic songs! I bought this CD about 16 years ago for about $40! Very hard to find. If I remember, it is an import from Japan and the inside of the CD is all in Japanese. The music is English...thank god! Lol!!
Thank the Heavens for the internet, Try buying this CD sometime near impossible but at least I can download it. Shame so much good music has been hidden and became hard to find. But this has been a KC favorite for years and even got 1 DJ fired for bitching about it getting too many request.
@screenname007 I've been looking to download this tune, because as you said its tough as all get out to get the CD. Can you tell me how you were able to download this song? Thanks!
Steve Walsh can sing, no doubt, and he is incredibly talented. That being said, I have seen the band live 4 times: 92,94,95,97. Each show was brilliant, but Steve never and I mean NEVER talks to or works the crowd. You know who BLOWS Steve out of the water on this issue (and 90% of all Classic rock singers/front men), Kevin Cronin of REO Speedwagon. That guy can work a retirement home parlor room into a frenzied rock and roll mob...!
STEVE WALSH......the greatest rock Voice ever .....no one can sing a song like Steve....and personally, I think his voice blew away Perrys voice...especially when he was young. This is my own opinion...
@pb4ueat1 Yes, I agree if you're talking about Steve Perry.
but imho there is no comparison between them! Perry is much far under Steve walsh! A great singer, but without that powerful voice!!!! The only voice that you can compare is Brad Delp of Boston. Thats my opinion; no rule! ;-) Only the good die young!
But it is always the taste of everyone! Have a good time!

I Just wanted to post a comment, I was never really a fan of Kansas, in the 70's I went heavier, but...I owned this LP and played the crap out of it. I always thought it was a strong underrated LP. And its been a real treat to hear it again. Excellent vocals, good writing and players with chops. I hope this rediscovered someday.
@reneejil They're right when they say nothing good came out of Kansas. Flatlanders like the Unioinist Jim Lane and the Jayhawkers were what drove Quantrell, Bloody Bill, The Youngers & the James to retaliate in the manner they did. When your father is murdered in cold blood, 3 of your sisters are deliberately killed in a supposed accidental house cave in, & your mother is forced to burn her own house & then hounded to death, it tends to make you want to take some revenge like Cole Younger did,
@SNOTSLINGER49 The winners write the history books. Read Cole Youngers autobiography (written at age 62, after 26 years in prison) & learn what the border war was really about. It wasn't about freeing slaves., it was about the Union Army & the Jayhawkers robbing, killing, raping, terrorizing. & stealing the lands & property of Southern sympathizers in Western Missouri, many of whom owned no slaves and were not proponents of secession.
@reneejil A lot of good people come from Kansas. They just get the hell out. EVEN STEVE WALSH!!! Kansas is a great place to be FROM. It's just a miserable place to be.
@reneejil I agree, but Steve Walsh is from my hometown of Saint Joseph, Missouri...Still across the river from Kansas, and obviously he is a Kansan too..

I always wanted Perry to reunite w/ Journey, but it was just my immaturity.
In reality, things are much different in a band.
I've played w/ my share of Idiots....from whiney babies,psychos,drunks/addicts to just outright Egomaniacs....not any fun, no matter how much the money is,not worth it.

They should of never broke up...singer about God/Jesus is a good thing and surely NOT a reason to break up....there had to be more to it that none of us know about...one thing for sure Steve Walsh is the greatest singer I ever heard.
He would talk to us (when he would talk) with a attitude like we weren't shit. He always had that don't bother me attitude. Or that "I am a star who are you?". The rest of the band would talk to you and say hi. He would disappear after the show only to turn up out of nowhere from the parking lot stoned and give you that fuck you attitude. When we asked the others band members why he acts like a brat they could only say that "We don't know either."
Well, I'm not trying to make exuses for him, but he was on alot of Coke back in the day[& very young & nieve].Maybe the waiter job, he took when he left "Kansas" in the 80's, humbled him some.
I used to be somewhat of an Asshole also,God has a way of bringing you to your knee's eventually...
I've been around Steve, and have never went up & bothered him, because I'm a Musician & it does get a little old after a while[greeting ppl that always say the same shit different town].It's just reallity..
Now I've hung out w/ Kerry[he used to come watch our band[only because his brother & nephew were in it,lol] but he's a nice guy.He only lives a few miles from me.Lookup "Grandyzine studio".
two things... one, i met walsh a few times in the 90's during their club era... he was very cool. n took the time to invite us the tour bus at the end of the show in del, md.... second... any chance some one could post "just how it feels
@gunnyranger2 Do you have any info on when/where Steve Walsh was a waiter at? I had heard that story years ago and can not find any info on the net. I know he did sing back up and play keyboards for Cheap Trick around 1985, after Streets broke up.
@gunnyranger2 Thanks, much. I do hope that some day some one gives Kansas the "Seeds of Change" deal and writes a totally in depth tell all book! I would buy it sight unseen.
To bad he is such an asshole in person. Great talent but such an ass. Yes, I met him. I was in a band that would open for KANSAS and he was just down right mean to everyone. He thought his shit didn't stink but guess what it did! Still love KANSAS forever!!!
I withdraw my previous post: I was reading kansas interviews and I stumbled upon a couple by Steve. He called FREDDIE MERCURY an asshole. He claimed he had a big ego. YEAH RIGHT LMFAO! I've never seen any "bad" things written about Freddie (he was a nice guy in real life). I think Steve was JEALOUS of Freddie!
I've talked with him on three or four occasions while touring. He's always cool, but he's just not keen to lighting up a conversation with a complete stranger. Nothing wrong with that, especially when your voice is tired from last night's gig, and you've got two more shows to go before you get a night off. He had no problem getting his pic taken with me, shaking my hand, or talking a bit.
omg.. u unintelligent, sorry excuse of a music fan!!! man c'mon, just listen to early kansas. walsh was the most insane vocalist of the 70's... o.k. freddie had more hits. bla bla bla... steve walsh was the best singer in his day... other vocalist just wished they could be as good!!! i'm so tired of preachin walsh... just check out "the devil game"' "it's you"' "lonely street"n "on the other side". that's only a few that freedie wished he could sing. u hafta listen to kansas to really know
I just can't see why great artists like Steve never gain the recognition they deserve, at least and today the most shit out of all "artists" are becoming famous... :-S
I've been listening to this since it was "new". Steve Walsh is the most underated singer/songwriter of this generation. All through Kansas, Streets, on his own. Dude is awesome. It's a tough call between him and Paul Rodgers who was the best of this era. Just my Two Cents Worth. :~)
Yeah there were alot of great singers from the 1950's until about,1990 something. Now all I hear are nusery rhimes talking about revolution against the whiteman and Bitches & ho's.
Although, in the last few years music has been getting better, but you don't hear many soprano, men singers much these days.
I am as big as SW fan as anyone. However, I really don't think the "songwriter" part is apt. He's one of the greatest rock-prog-rock SINGERS of all time. Most his best tunes that he sung were written by Livgren.
Steve will always be underrated. I'm glad some people realize how amazingly talented this man is. Ya know NOONE sounds like him. His voice is SO immediately recognizable. Such a powerful instrument, sad indeed he lost so much. I can't bear to see him perform again after the last show.
I live just a few miles from Kerry Livgren,he's a nice fella.I've played in bands w/ his nephew and brother in the past.Kerry used to come /o and watch us play.
I just seen him the other day speaking at a Tea Party.Once in i while i run into Robbie. But I think Steve still lives in Atlanta.
Your right he's way underrated,so is Ronnie James Dio.
my mother went to school with steve in st. joe,mo. and said he was made fun of for being in choir but always new he would be great she said his band called america was great we love steve to this day may youre music carry on forever
Steve Walsh is sooooo great. Very much like Lou Gramm...these guys sang their balls off..range, power, and emotion. All you have to do is try to sing like that and you can really appreciate them.
Don't mean to rag on Walsh but Dio is over 65 and still has the same voice. Opera guys maintain their voices until old age by singing with a strict regimented technique. But that's not rock and roll! Walsh is still my favorite.
Hmm,i checked Dio a few months ago and i thought [the footage i seen]that he had lost some of his high notes.Maybe he was just having a bad night.Dio is one of my all time favorite singers/song writer.
We've got similar tastes! I heard a first hand account from one of my guitar profs at Berklee (a totally stand up guy) when he opened for Kansas during the Morse era in Boston that he witnessed Walsh doing some things before the show that would really really hurt one's voice. I won't further elaborate on a public thread, but email me and I'll repeat the story. After I heard the story it didn't surprise me why his voice changed.
steve and ronnie are my two all time favorites. hey, my friend, steve had a long battle with drugs and drinking. he sounds better now then 10 years ago. saw dio recently. he's insane. stays down on some of the high's but c'mon both these guys are in their 60's. ever compared their vocals on kerry's mask of the great deceiver? ronnie doing the studio version and steve live from 1980 audio visions tour? sorry, as much as i love ronnie, steve blows him away.
i am a very lucky guy, i got to sit on a piano bench drinking shots, next to my idol steve, i first met him in 76 by accident, an elevator opened on the box level of royals stadium during a summerjam concert, and was stuned because it was like looking in a mirror, he was also stuned, and asked me who i was, i was just 16 and dont remember telling him my name, we talked for 5mins or more befor he told me who he was, i said i didnt believe him, and he started singing lonely wind!
i new in an instant it was him, he said he needed to go do his warm up, and ask if i wanted to tag along! we traveled down elevators, walked thru tunnels, talking about everyday stuff i think head east was playing when we walked out onto the field, and my god seeing 40,000+ looking back was scarey but exciteing just befor they went on he took the captins hat i was wearing put it on and said kansas is the captin of this show, i said fuck yea, and he ran on to the greatest roar ive ever heard!
by luck my name and info. were written on the inside of my hat, two months later, the phone rings and steve said hey freak, hows the weather back in that shit hole, i said windy as useual, and invited me to come to atlanta to get my hat back, im now 48 he cant sing over me anymore but he can still make the hair stand up on my neck, hes had a rough road but hes ok with his past now and is still my idol, i sing this song when ever i can, and he just sang it for my new grandson 2 months ago! lucky!
what a beautiful touching... story:) I can't believe it! and you have remained friends for all these years with him? amazing! I loved Kansas grew up singing all the words to everysong.. I tried to sound just like him.. and Paul Rodgers as well.. He was MY inspiration... :) I love him for that and the songs the amazing brilliant complex melodies and lyrics...Thank-you for this story Bless you :)
Cool, ive been around Kerry and Robbie a couple of times, but when they come home we try and give them a break from the whole fan thing. We just treat them like the guy next door. They're real nice guys!
kerry lives about 5 miles away from me, steve lives in nashville, funny though cause i see more of steve than kerry! they are all long time friends and extended family for me now again thats why i count myself lucky, in fact kerry is the reason i work for dean guitars now, he introduced me to mr dean, in 1986, and i just had my 22nd aniversary with this great company, kerry just had his 30yr. aniv. as one of the original dean artists!
Steve said that the louder he got, the higher pitch his voice got back in the day. Some tenors have that trait (including me, but I'm no Walsh!) ... it's a nice little thing to have when you want to impress all your buds on just how damn high you can sing.
I grew up on KSHE too! The first Kansas song I ever heard was Icarus and the darn thing still blows me away! What's happened to Steve's voice? I've seen them twice in the last couple years and the poor guy's pipes are fried! But I'm forever grateful for what Steve and Kansas gave us.
Hey Gunny, I think there's something else, only because I've read lots of press where they talk about how bad he got for a while and how he's doing much better these days. Just wondering if he was battling something or dealing with some kind of issues. He's got to be the most underappreciated singer of the rock era. In fact, you could say that about Kerry and the whole band. Just breathtaking!
Cool; still have family there I visit from time to time; when I drive in from in by I-64 from the east, always tune in kshe when close enough, then start to see the Arch; didn't realize significance of kshe until I left and had been gone for years, then this utube comes along, and I see all of these people talking about kshe! Pass it on!
"Heil Sweet Meat & Away"! Lonestar classic on Kshe 95 Real Rock Radio! I'm from St.Louis but recently relocated. I'm a big Kansas fan & a fellow musician. I have most of their albums except for this Live solo album by Steve Walsh. What a killer song & one word can describe Steve Walsh's vocals."INCREDIBLE"
my favorite vocalist!!!!!!! great song. This (and audio-visions) is the last album with his voice in good shape. By the way that´s not morse on guitar, it´s jeff lux.
I live in Topeka KS,and run into the guys frof Kansa once in a while.Mostly Kerry,he lives only a few miles from me.He has a recording studio in town.
AAAH! So Awsome, what a pump up tune!

' from walsh on here?
cdamonlaino 2 years ago
I'll take your word. I keep hearing stories from both sides of the coin.
Gregsynth 2 years ago
@gunnyranger2 Do you have any info on when/where Steve Walsh was a waiter at? I had heard that story years ago and can not find any info on the net. I know he did sing back up and play keyboards for Cheap Trick around 1985, after Streets broke up.

@AmericanFireBrand Why do I wanna say either Atlanta or L.A.???
gunnyranger2 1 year ago
@gunnyranger2 Thanks, much. I do hope that some day some one gives Kansas the "Seeds of Change" deal and writes a totally in depth tell all book! I would buy it sight unseen.
AmericanFireBrand 1 year ago
I feel bad for the other members of Kansas because Steve acts like that.
Gregsynth 2 years ago
i guess never judge any person until you have walked a mile in their shoe's fits here.
not knowing steve or ever talking to him, i can see he has a bit of an ego and has treated some kansas fans rather shitty over the years.
until he himself explains why. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt.
ke2323 2 years ago
To bad he is such an asshole in person. Great talent but such an ass. Yes, I met him. I was in a band that would open for KANSAS and he was just down right mean to everyone. He thought his shit didn't stink but guess what it did! Still love KANSAS forever!!!
wildmanhawkes 2 years ago
He may have been suffering from "Lead singer disease".
Have ran into a couple like that myself.
gunnyranger2 2 years ago
Really?
Gregsynth 2 years ago
I withdraw my previous post: I was reading kansas interviews and I stumbled upon a couple by Steve. He called FREDDIE MERCURY an asshole. He claimed he had a big ego. YEAH RIGHT LMFAO! I've never seen any "bad" things written about Freddie (he was a nice guy in real life). I think Steve was JEALOUS of Freddie!
Gregsynth 2 years ago
I read that too. Walsh took a big risk saying that.
VIDEOHEREBOB 2 years ago
Maybe he was in a bad mood? But what made my blood boil, was that he said "Freddie's ego was BIGGER than his TALENT!"
Gregsynth 2 years ago
Walsh is an outspoken guy.
VIDEOHEREBOB 2 years ago
He sure is.
Gregsynth 2 years ago
why do you say that? Can you give example? I like Kansas music too.
janny108 2 years ago
I've talked with him on three or four occasions while touring. He's always cool, but he's just not keen to lighting up a conversation with a complete stranger. Nothing wrong with that, especially when your voice is tired from last night's gig, and you've got two more shows to go before you get a night off. He had no problem getting his pic taken with me, shaking my hand, or talking a bit.
Yahteebuckety 2 years ago
He never made that list of the top 100 male rock vocalists of all time. How the hell can that be? He was incredible!!! So underrated.

Probably one of the greatest singers ever....and this song is so good. It should of made it to the charts....Steve Walsh is great.
PB4UEAT 2 years ago
Steve Walsh is a killer vocalist! And learn to spell moron. And can you sing?
gwen618 2 years ago
I think you need to learn how to spell "moron."
Freddy was great; his voice didn't deteriorate as he aged, probably because sang with more traditional "learned" technique.
Steve in his prime was like a straight Freddy Mercury, but less refined.
JonWRowe 2 years ago
You = Moron,lol!
gunnyranger2 2 years ago
omg.. u unintelligent, sorry excuse of a music fan!!! man c'mon, just listen to early kansas. walsh was the most insane vocalist of the 70's... o.k. freddie had more hits. bla bla bla... steve walsh was the best singer in his day... other vocalist just wished they could be as good!!! i'm so tired of preachin walsh... just check out "the devil game"' "it's you"' "lonely street"n "on the other side". that's only a few that freedie wished he could sing. u hafta listen to kansas to really know
cdamonlaino 2 years ago 2
right on...i totally agree..no one could out sing this performer...

I just can't see why great artists like Steve never gain the recognition they deserve, at least and today the most shit out of all "artists" are becoming famous... :-S
famousvim26 2 years ago
He's way better than Michael "Wacko Jacko Jackson" lol!
gunnyranger2 2 years ago
I've been listening to this since it was "new". Steve Walsh is the most underated singer/songwriter of this generation. All through Kansas, Streets, on his own. Dude is awesome. It's a tough call between him and Paul Rodgers who was the best of this era. Just my Two Cents Worth. :~)
Scarecrowks 2 years ago
Yeah there were alot of great singers from the 1950's until about,1990 something. Now all I hear are nusery rhimes talking about revolution against the whiteman and Bitches & ho's.
Although, in the last few years music has been getting better, but you don't hear many soprano, men singers much these days.

I am as big as SW fan as anyone. However, I really don't think the "songwriter" part is apt. He's one of the greatest rock-prog-rock SINGERS of all time. Most his best tunes that he sung were written by Livgren.

Steve rules
xxxPOOPBANDITxxx 2 years ago
Steve will always be underrated. I'm glad some people realize how amazingly talented this man is. Ya know NOONE sounds like him. His voice is SO immediately recognizable. Such a powerful instrument, sad indeed he lost so much. I can't bear to see him perform again after the last show.
Darrenteed 2 years ago
I live just a few miles from Kerry Livgren,he's a nice fella.I've played in bands w/ his nephew and brother in the past.Kerry used to come /o and watch us play.
I just seen him the other day speaking at a Tea Party.Once in i while i run into Robbie. But I think Steve still lives in Atlanta.
Your right he's way underrated,so is Ronnie James Dio.

Steve Walsh is sooooo great. Very much like Lou Gramm...these guys sang their balls off..range, power, and emotion. All you have to do is try to sing like that and you can really appreciate them.
VIDEOHEREBOB 3 years ago
Don't mean to rag on Walsh but Dio is over 65 and still has the same voice. Opera guys maintain their voices until old age by singing with a strict regimented technique. But that's not rock and roll! Walsh is still my favorite.
JonWRowe 3 years ago
Hmm,i checked Dio a few months ago and i thought [the footage i seen]that he had lost some of his high notes.Maybe he was just having a bad night.Dio is one of my all time favorite singers/song writer.
gunnyranger2 3 years ago
We've got similar tastes! I heard a first hand account from one of my guitar profs at Berklee (a totally stand up guy) when he opened for Kansas during the Morse era in Boston that he witnessed Walsh doing some things before the show that would really really hurt one's voice. I won't further elaborate on a public thread, but email me and I'll repeat the story. After I heard the story it didn't surprise me why his voice changed.
JonWRowe 3 years ago
steve and ronnie are my two all time favorites. hey, my friend, steve had a long battle with drugs and drinking. he sounds better now then 10 years ago. saw dio recently. he's insane. stays down on some of the high's but c'mon both these guys are in their 60's. ever compared their vocals on kerry's mask of the great deceiver? ronnie doing the studio version and steve live from 1980 audio visions tour? sorry, as much as i love ronnie, steve blows him away.

i am a very lucky guy, i got to sit on a piano bench drinking shots, next to my idol steve, i first met him in 76 by accident, an elevator opened on the box level of royals stadium during a summerjam concert, and was stuned because it was like looking in a mirror, he was also stuned, and asked me who i was, i was just 16 and dont remember telling him my name, we talked for 5mins or more befor he told me who he was, i said i didnt believe him, and he started singing lonely wind!
KSFALLGUY 3 years ago 2
i new in an instant it was him, he said he needed to go do his warm up, and ask if i wanted to tag along! we traveled down elevators, walked thru tunnels, talking about everyday stuff i think head east was playing when we walked out onto the field, and my god seeing 40,000+ looking back was scarey but exciteing just befor they went on he took the captins hat i was wearing put it on and said kansas is the captin of this show, i said fuck yea, and he ran on to the greatest roar ive ever heard!
KSFALLGUY 3 years ago
by luck my name and info. were written on the inside of my hat, two months later, the phone rings and steve said hey freak, hows the weather back in that shit hole, i said windy as useual, and invited me to come to atlanta to get my hat back, im now 48 he cant sing over me anymore but he can still make the hair stand up on my neck, hes had a rough road but hes ok with his past now and is still my idol, i sing this song when ever i can, and he just sang it for my new grandson 2 months ago! lucky!
KSFALLGUY 3 years ago
what a beautiful touching... story:) I can't believe it! and you have remained friends for all these years with him?

They're real nice guys!

kerry lives about 5 miles away from me, steve lives in nashville, funny though cause i see more of steve than kerry! they are all long time friends and extended family for me now again thats why i count myself lucky, in fact kerry is the reason i work for dean guitars now, he introduced me to mr dean, in 1986, and i just had my 22nd aniversary with this great company, kerry just had his 30yr. aniv. as one of the original dean artists!

gunnyranger2 3 years ago
Steve said that the louder he got, the higher pitch his voice got back in the day. Some tenors have that trait (including me, but I'm no Walsh!) ... it's a nice little thing to have when you want to impress all your buds on just how damn high you can sing.
yhposolihP 3 years ago
Yeah, the louder i get the higher i can blow /o the notes. If you know how to sing from your stomach,it helps too.
I played in a band w/ Jake livgren and he always stuck his tounge /o when hitting the high note.Punch his name in,he's Kerrys nephew.
gunnyranger2 3 years ago
I grew up on KSHE too! The first Kansas song I ever heard was Icarus and the darn thing still blows me away! What's happened to Steve's voice? I've seen them twice in the last couple years and the poor guy's pipes are fried! But I'm forever grateful for what Steve and Kansas gave us.
MUTrainerBill 3 years ago
Hes gotta be pushing sixty. He gave it all he had when he was in his prime.
gunnyranger2 3 years ago
Hey Gunny, I think there's something else, only because I've read lots of press where they talk about how bad he got for a while and how he's doing much better these days. Just wondering if he was battling something or dealing with some kind of issues. He's got to be the most underappreciated singer of the rock era. In fact, you could say that about Kerry and the whole band. Just breathtaking!
