I actually think it's a cool effect and the playing is kind of cool in a way too, it just doesn't go with the backing riff at all. With the kind of music I do I use this sort of timbre to go nuts in the middle of the song. This isn't that different to that video of Johnny Greenwood dicking around with Max MSP effects. It's about context.

I don't think Henry Kaiser is particularly inventive or anything though. He seems like a nice guy, but a bit of a knob end at the same time.
