  • the video is all screwed up.

  • I only gor a few seconds of this video..That sux..big time..Oh,I have been to Kings Cross (lived there) and St.Kilda..and they are very different..and great places for their own reasons..Great places for a songwriter to live...always something happening..I love Sydney and Melbourne..You can't compare 2 totally different places...Paul Kelly is a genius..love him to bits..

  • Don't know if anyone else gets this but I'm only getting the first 35 secs of the video - the search results say the video is 2 minutes or so, then when I click though the entire video is shown as being only 35 seconds long.

  • WtFaaaarrrrkkkk?????????????

  • kings & St Kildher are both hell-holes, LOVE this song tho

  • @wobblyboost StKilda is my home, as it is Paul's, and you are soooooooooooooo mistaken.

  • love love love Paul Kelly! this song reminds me of bus trips from Kings Cross to St Kilda... listening to this song.

  • whys the video in fast foward dude

  • This is actually the most amazing Kelly song.

  • OHWOWPAULKELLYWITHHAIR! i absolutely adore this song :)

  • Figgin grand, i like st kilda and milsons point, all cities end up looking the same to me generally though

  • Why do Adelaide artist sing so many songs about Melbourne and Sydney? Cold Chisel, The Angels, Bon Scott, Red Gum... cause Adelaide pushes the good artist away!

  • Another great, great PK song!

  • The Aussie Bob Dylan.

  • the Bard of australia..is paul kelly

  • You speak true!!

  • love this song, great to drink beer with

  • fair weather friends are the lonliest friends

  • can't wait to see P.K at Meredith on Saturday night. Will be magical, no doubt.

  • i love how his songs are stories.

  • i also did the tour of drug meccas - stkilda to the cross in 85. it was different daze. those of us who are left share the memories.

  • Love this song ! I'm not even from st kilda!

    Go Paul!

  • ST KILA FOREVER

  • Kilda

  • Comment removed

  • St Kilda is such an amazing place, too bad their football team is no good.

    go the tiges

  • no good? pull your head out of your arse....Richo was the only good player in Richmond. And they were STILL shit.

  • Great Australian Song Go St Kilda

  • its not about the football club... its about his postcard.

  • Australia has so much potential to be a peaceful nation..so why aren't we?

  • because then we lose

  • says the paranoid and insecure... yep, we've already lost. We had the potential but it's been fucked over now... mostly by people like you.

  • @nzoz1985 what do u mean

  • @ryan258369

I think I was responding to a comment made by somebody who removed their comment months ago... so I can't quite recall what I was going on about. I think I might have been implying that Australia is not what Australia used to be....

  • @nzoz1985 no where is what it used to be, by definition. don't want to sound like an asshole, but there is a reason they say "you can never go home ", when you get there it's never the place you left. Talking about how things used to be defines where you are as not being as good as where you were. Do you really want to be in a worse place than you were in?

  • lose what, hatred and insecurity stemmed from people like you? if thats what we lose, i'm all for winning!

  • calm down bro

  • what are they on about fuck:S

  • go pies

  • St KILDA FOREVER

  • Great song

    by a Great Aussie

  • For Fuck Sake!

Every time I watch a video, every fucking time, there is some piss-ant argument going on about who/what/where is better.

    Dickheads, all of you.

Live where ever you fucking want - do whatever you want, follow whichever sport, drink whatever beer, drive whatever car - and shut the fuck up. Please.

  • well said mate, couldn't agree more

  • THANKYOU!

  • LOL, you said what everybody thought.. bout couldnt be fucked to say.

    good job :)

  • @BTPossum I agree with your sentiments but really must you use such bad language to make your point? It really is most uncultured.

  • @Westyrulz Culture is best found elsewhere.

  • @BTPossum Yes,too-right!!

  • @BTPossum at last..someone with sense around here!

  • @BTPossum Fuckin right on you legend!!!

  • @BTPossum blow up

  • @BTPossum too right mate, we live in a great country, we have great cities, we have great footy codes to watch, all of them have their own sense of history and define a region, state, or and nation, we have great beer. I love Melbourne. I love Sydney. I love Brisbane. I love AFL, NRL, Rugby, cricket ... while I may prefer one more over the other, they're still great games. Tooheys, VB, XXXX ,and Boags. I wish people would just be happy in this country!!! Paul Kelly writes great songs too!

  • Juanos ... ha ha - AFL on Wednesday - ha ha ... yep, Melb has it all!!

That pretty much siums you up in a nutshell, Tiger.

Skinfactors has it all over ya (she sounds pretty cool)

Hope you're nice n warm down there, gringo

    ;-)

  • In 1982, Paul Kelly walked into the Royal Hotel, Punt Rd in Richmond. He sat down and pulled out his guitar. "hey guys, can I play for you"..?

Life is good. God bless Australia.

    Cheers.

  • This reminds me of leaving Melb in 1999 and moving to Sydney..I was homesick for Melb then fell in love with Sydney.. I now live in the USA since 2003, and bloody miss anything Australia..so i would take Melb Syd,,,even Bloody Adelaide if i could..hahaha..

  • SHHH just listen. the song is not about sydney or melbourne. Just listen to the story. respect the song for what it is....

  • FUCKING LEGEND

  • 100... Skinfactors are you still here ? I was here 3 months ago watching one of my faves and you were a pest then, good to see some things dont change. You would think someone wth so much wealth would have better things to do..............or is Sydney really that boring you have nothing better to do you nob !!!!

  • Amigo Juanos - good to hear from you. Actually thank you for asking about my life but in fact I have been in partying hard in Tel Aviv. The only reason you find me again on youtube is because some pest sent me an email!!

I have an excuse for being here - what is your excuse taco bell?

I think you are stalking me!!!

  • You assume i am Spanish because of my user name , fair enough. My great grandfather was in the light horse brigade and my pop fought in ww2. ' Taco bell ' is a bit of a stereotype isnt it ? Are you a racist ? I am here because i like the song , what was your excuse again ? And one more thing , why are they playing state of origin rugby in wonderfull Melbourne.........hmmmmm : ) P.S dont flatter yourself

  • Hello Amigo Juanos, you called me a nob so you assume I am a male. Are you sexist????

As for the song, I have the original on vynil

bought the month that the album was released.

As for State of Origin being held in Vic - it is because we need to enlighten y'all on the better game - simple really!!

  • No ,no my friend i called you a nob because you are a nob regardless of gender. I also have vynil edition blah blah .......... would you get 50,000 + to an AFL game in Sydney on a wednesday.... i think not..........Melbourne is where it happens mate !!! ........: )

  • Just goes to show how vacuous southerners are!! \

Amigo Juanos - i think we have become good friends!!

  • Hmmmm i dont have any rich friends with yachts and stuff for i am a humble boilermaker..........wow !!!

  • Amigo Juanos, you can bask in the shadow of my glory or indeed in the glory of my shadow anytime!!

Heck if you are ever up this way, I will let you be the deck hand for the day:):):)

  • i lol'd at this arguement. such sophisticated reasonable points. don't see much of that anymore :D

  • Mr Fri - happy to be of service.

I think you will win the lottery - so keep playing:):):)

  • Hey skinny, mrfri was only talking about the sophisticated reasonable points , why did YOU reply !!!! : )

  • Amigo Juanos, I think you have fallen in love with me!! And the lovely compliment "skinny" hasnt gone unoticed either!! I think you are starting to show your soft and sensitive side. I am touched.... BUT i will have you know that if you just want me for my money I wont have a bar of it!!

My dear, dear Juanos, the reason I replied is simply because the very wise and delightful MrFRI actually sent me that reply so he was talking to me and about me!!!

  • Now skinfactors i didn't mean to excite you, settle down you are showing your 'Sydney' side !! Under 40 000 at international soccer last night is shocking. It should have been played at the G !!! This arguement was about Melbourne and sidny wasn't it ?? Are you gay ? not that there's anything righ......wrong with that, my 10 year old son wants to know...........we both think you are : )

  • Amigo Juanos, two emails in one day is nearly more than I can bear!! I think you really need to come to Sydney and broaden your horizon - all you do is talk about sport!!

Amigo Juanos, if anyone is insecure about their masculinity it is you who needs to tell the world that you have a son - just in case!!.

I think this argument started off because of your homophobia not my sporting myopia!!!

Face it amigo - you are fascinated by me and my Sydney side!!

  • NO YOU WILL ALWAYS

    BE DECK HEAD

  • A DECKHEAD ??? I am the skipper of my yacht. I think you have the wrong person - you are probabaly referring to my amigos Juanos74.

Gee Runt, have I upset you that you send me impolite messages. Its too bad because I actually like you!!

  • DICKHEAD

  • 'I'd give you all of Sydney Harbour...' so true, man!

    Go Saints!!

  • skinfactors you are deluded. I enivite you to come far north where the best restaurant is the slab under the animal you just caught. How can you say the Harbour is clean, DDT anyone, that stuff will sit in the benthic layer for years to come. My mates long-drop would be safet to eat off than your cancer causing basin. Come north, dont shave for a week, live a bit and for fuck sake put down the latte' and grab a tin cup of bushells. Shit!! Its called Australia not Ausydney, see the nation!!

  • are you bagging the song? what do u mean isnt he saying how beatiful st kilda is?

  • st kilda is definitely the shizz...i will never have love for sydney. st. kilda does it to me every time.

  • Hello castorsugar - for your information I only drink cappuccinos and loose leaf organic tea.

  • I like you Mr Purple, I really do.

  • i give you all of all sydney harbour, all that land and all that water, for that one sweet promenade........(espy,palace,palais,prince of wales,ect.ect..ect)

  • . . . . . just take me back to Australia ! Take a ' Kelly ' fix weekly.

  • LOVE ST KILDA ITS IN MY SOUL

  • its not his fault

  • we dont call you canadians

  • do you no what shits me people from sydney who call us mexicans they think they are the 51st amercan state we from melbourne are proud aussies

  • Yeah, I know that you mean. And I'm from Sydney!

There is almost a complete lack of Australian spirit these days. Nobody has any respect for the country. Everyone's forgotten what it is to be proud.

I've always felt more at home in Melbourne than I have in Sydney.

  • We all live in the best continent on the planet !! There are plenty of proud people like you and i, but there is also a few clowns i'm afraid to say. LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hey i agree its a cool place and i loved my time there i'm irish and i think there is something about the aussies thats so similar to us. BUT i don't think yee aussies like us. whats that about the irish have great time for the aussies when they're in ireland.

great song. st kilda is a class spot. didn't like kings cross !!!

  • Kings Cross is dead. It was once a great place with great live music, vibe and atmosphere. Now, it's desolation for lost souls, losers and sex-dwalfs.

  • LOL HAHAHAHAHAH You are lamenting like KC was ever a cultural beacon!!! I grew up around KC and as far as I can remember in nearly 40 years, this place has always had losers, lost souls and sex-dwalfs. This is what makes KC fun, exciting and interesting. In fact KC is under threat of losing its soul because bores such as yourself want to homogenise it. So do yourself a favor and go back to your safe suburban haven and keep your baterial free paws off it.

  • Oh, I'm only repeating the sentiments of those who used to lived, worked and played at Kings Cross some 50 years ago... the cracks started to show around 40 years ago, when cumstains like yourself, somehow evolved into adults and began to manifest the discolour.

Stop being so accusing. My father lived in Kings Cross and having to visit him, I became quite aware of it's shittiness. Perhaps you have somc sick fetish for those lost people... However, I would prefer a place with real fun.

  • You are wrong dear Juanos74 - we love MALBURNIANS but as much as it hurts to hear it, the thruth is that we lucky bugger Sydney siders are smarter, better looking, richer, sexier, better dressed, eclectic, culturally superior and taller. Must have something to do with the near perfect all year round temperature, the azure waters of the harbour and the crystal clear sandy white swimmable beaches that dot our east facing, feng shui perfect city.

  • sounds very much like a yank (were better than you) comment . Fact of the matter is mate i cn live there or anywhere in oz i like mate , thats why Australia is great. BTW i am from Melbourne not Malburn and you live in the homosexual heartland

  • You sound surprised that KC is shiity - who lead you astray my dear?? Who sold you the myth that KC was anything but shitty?

I have no fetish for lost soul, but it is obvious you have no empathy for them!!

Move to malburne now!! There is no shitty place there and no lost souls..mmmmmmmmmmahahehehehehehheheh

  • skin, you are a fucking childish cunt. Sydney is not all that great at all and if you believe in each of those little tags you've just typed, than you have one hell of a self-confidence issue.

I am a Sydney sider and I want to live in Melbourne. What culture does Sydney have? Get out of bed, work, go home and on weekends, see a movie and avoid the little teenage gangs in hoods... or snort cocaine with your sexy-friends whose noses are breaking to pieces from the inside!

    Fucking lovely!

  • This is very funny - thanks for making me laugh. Has been a hard day at my harbour view office on the 27th floor making another million dollars in hedge funds. Yes you bet there is still lots to make even in the current economic climate. Think I might tuck into some beluga on ice with the french bubbly before slipping into my rooftop spa for relax, then read some SATRE before watching a little tv of the 100 channels that are available on my 2 metre lcd screen.

    Fucking lovely!

  • Eventually you'll just die, so your words really do not mean anything at all. I'm sure they're all lies made up for your cheap thrills of pissing people off.

  • Oh yeah mate make all that money and spend all night before easter holiday arguing on youtube? hahahahhah. Shouldnt you be out on your yacht onthe harbour ?????

  • Boat is on dry dock.

Not my easter, but thank you for your concern none-the-less

  • You my friend are , how we say in Melbourne a half back flanker !! Listen to the lyrics.

  • Skinfactors... I don't appreciate how you wave your success in other people's faces. From what I've read, you seem to have a superiority complex. Just a word of advise, people don't tend to enjoy people who act like this. I knew someone who boasted and put other people down to gain acceptance when he first joined my old school. Needless to say, me and some mates waited for him after school and beat the shite out of him. Secondly, it doesnt matter where you live, make the most of your situation

  • Hello Cyanide - take a dose of your own medicine and calm down!!

  • got a point there buddy, i also live in sydney but not in a extremely expensiv penthouse with a motoryacht in dry-dock, i suspect neither does skinfactors :P i live in gladesville a workin class suburb but i too am in love with melbourne for its culture, Sydney has nothing on it AT ALL. i am an AFL player and down in melbourne they live for Music and AFL, it's my dream to move down there because in my opinion melbourne is the most culture-filled city in australia, Sydney is simply bland...

  • @skinfactors Wow what a lifestyle,I really envy you!!

  • @Westyrulz You are invited to join us - we are leaving or the Cote d'azur in two weeks!!

  • @annahathis1 Sorry, got to work but have a great trip!!

  • @skinfactors fuck you skinfactors im with nzoz12985

  • @tryscoringmachine95 Jealousy is a curse.

  • @skinfactors hey fuctard ......... you move money ...so what

  • @grunt182820 HEY GRUNT - I smell a pig!!

BTW - i am now by my real name ANNA HATHIS

  • @skinfactors oniy the 27th floor look above dick head, or below when the $ TAKES A DIVE........... dip shit

  • mate i live in sydney too, on the water but up the parra river. The harbour has is still swimmable but you wouldnt see me in there its gettin dirty as fuck now, perfection doesnt appear in sydney's dictionary its so dirty and everyone in sydney is angry. in the city nobody is happy and theres gangs of cranky little lebanese or aboriginal teenagers looking for people to start fights with, melbourne has real culture with its music and sports scene. take into mind that i actualy LIVE in sydney

  • My dear Glee-boy. It is about time that you left the river and came a little further east to witness the pristine waters of our harbour. Take a rod and go fishing because there is plenty to catch. Obviously the world has passed you by - the harbour is now the cleanest it has been in a long while. I would rather drink the water of the harbour than swim in PORT PHILLIP BAY - urgh!!!

I thnk the only angry people are the gun-totting trigger happy VIC cops.

  • Oh and so music and AFl makes a place cultural??? Well that makes me a right ole hick doesnt it? Afterall I prefer the opera house, Australia's best restaurants, the enviable outdoor lifestyle, the vast blue skies, the temperate weather , the multiculturalism, the gay tolerant attitide - OH whats the point I am just a bland Sydney loser with no culture.

Help me Glee-boy - do you think I should redeem myself and move to Melbourne???

  • Please dont , you make sydney what it is?

  • Come on down !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My dear Juanos,

Unlike yourself, we friendly Sydney siders actually embrace all peoples that want to live or visit our utopia, including myopic homophobes.

    Enlightenment awaits you!!!

  • mate you'll have to come up to Nrth Qld sometime, we have a good 300 km of pristeen rainforests , waterfalls and some very seluded beachs(to catch the good fish)(and have a few quiet cones), but yer come up here, we don't much care for southerners :) but if ur friendly and up here for a good time then you will be steered toward the nearest bar-stool, beer in hand. :) take it easy.

  • i'd love to, i absolutely love fishing andi kno Nth QLD has som of the greatest fishin in the world, with the great barrier reef at ur doorstep. im thinking of coming up there within a year or so im desperate to get up there and have a fish :)i wanna go to cairns or even townsville, somewhere on the coast where a local can hook me up with some barra fishing and also some great reef fishin too, got know any good fishing friends? :)

  • also im not quite old enough to hit the bar stool im only 15 haha but yeah i really wanna get up there and have a good fishi im an addict :P

  • i like how to make gravy but this is a close second

  • hard to pick a favourite PK song, but this could well be it.

  • I thought it was a song about being homesick, to emphasise this he says he would trade the entire shoreline of that emerald city for the promenade of his hometown.

  • totally right

  • Except his hometown is adelaide?

  • paul kelly- the only leftie working class hero who plays at a winery for the priveleged few who can afford $250..lol

  • I think he was the opening act for Leonard Cohen. Thus those that paid that amount in fact paid to see the magnificent LC - although the wonderful PK was a bonus. I saw Leonard twice and would see him again in a heartbeat and spend my last dime doing so. Get over yourself and your pathetic and unfounded anger. Know the truth before you open your mouth and denigrate people.

  • I was at the LC concert in Sydney... Tex Perkins and Jimmy Barnes were there too!

  • DaveSuze ... Congratulations!! You took the bait. You Mexicans are so touchy -

Mate, unless you see my 'assface', don't make an assumption on what I resemble or look like. And, mate, as a suggestion, just read thru your effort before posting it - tidy up the typos a bit. It's the way people in the Big Cities do things ... have done since the 1980s ended. ;-)

  • If God should strike me dead whilst lying in the sun listening to Post, I will die happy!

    I love Paul Kelly!

  • This album changed my life... in regional Australia in 1985 synth pop was omnipresenet, and then Post appeared on our only independent radio station. What a brilliantly understated work of art! Back then no-one had heard of you, but Kelly you're a legend!

  • hes such a poet

    love him

  • ha ha - Mexicans ..

I reckon old PK has too much grey matter & talent to be involved in Syd v Melb crap. The point of the song is fear of change - trepidation, comfort zone, all that. The following sound familiar? ..

Have you ever seen Sydney from a 727 at night?

Sydney shines such a beautiful light

& I see Bondi through my window way off to the right

& the curling waves on a distant break

& the sleeping city just about to wake

Have you ever seen Sydney from a 727 at night?

    Gorgeous

  • My wife reckons he looks more attractive with no hair. Everyone will see something different.

  • ha ha ... ya put any part of Melb in a song lyric & it stirs the Mexicans up! St Kilda musta been a crap place - for old PK moved out didn't he?? For, um, Sydney, I believe ...

  • ahahaha. would he betray them for us?

  • Yet PK would've traded all of Sydney for St Kilda...

  • Look up where lives now before writing something so stupid... Takes a cockroach to try figure out whats is ass whats he's face...

  • thiss song is greatt

is he still alive lol ?

  • sadly, paul kelly's hair follicles have passed away many years ago - leaving behind the rest of the body...

  • ahaha. but he still grows a beard here and there xD

  • hahahaaaa

    he looks wierd baldd

but still a great music artistt :)

  • rofl,

  • I was bought up listening to PK,and i love his music/lyrics,he is definatley a great singer/songwriter,this song in particular has a very sa-real feeling about it,one of my first songs i learned on guitar was to her door

  • Song reminds me of early 1991, at my old place in Cammeray when my parents played this album just after it was re-released on CD. Only a Vic would choose St Kilda over Sydney Harbour lol

  • First Paul Kelly song i ever heard whilst on a holiday visiting the wife's big brother in Geelong, big fan ever since.

  • Interesting comments about PK at the personal level. More anecdotes welcome. I have met Pete Murray (well for 30 seconds!) and he is a top bloke.

Anyway this is a great song from a genius song-writer. St Kilda footy side are scum though.

  • It's funny. The video looks more 1975 than 1985. Anyone agree?

  • ha, ha, ha - paul kelly didn't have the cash to make himself a nice 'typically 1985' video. he had to settle on some friend's 8mm film-camera instead.

  • Hehe, I like it better.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! You have no idea how much it means!

  • I moved from Melb to Sydney and missed it so much. This song brought a smile and cheered me up. I now live in New Jersey USA and would give anything to live in either Melb or Sydney ..

    GO FIGURE HUH

  • From northern beaches of NSW and now in iowa.Fuck I think I would even prefer NJ to this

  • I was on my first visit to the cross as a young man. It was just like in the song. sleezy rain, lights shining. The first time i heard this song, it was like paul had been there with me. Great Australian song.

  • One of my favorite songs about Australia, though I will always be for Melbourne over Sydney since Melbourne was so welcoming to me.

  • And Melbourne would welcome you back. It is the most Celtic of cities.

  • Sorry to hear the story about the fan who was treated like shit - just not my experience at all. My son, Paul Smith wrote to Paul Kelly when he was 9. We were sitting in the concert hall in Perth when security came, took us all backstage in the break and my son met Paul Kelly and the band and got to play guitar with Steve Conelly (sadly passed away now). When my Paul was 21 he wrote again and got to meet Paul Kelly the second time. On the wall at my son's house are photos of the two meetings.

  • and it's people like you (and other fans) that keep him away from getting a day job.

  • bonnita.

That saddens me to hear. If he did behave that way then he is less in my eyes too.

    He's Paul Kelly not Buddah

  • where is that laneway where Kelly is kicking a puddle?
