I sat down to look at one song of Judy's, Old Man River tonight. Well, now I am up to the 15th video and Im all energized and just flabergasted at the talent this woman had. There really is no one like her around now. Why is that? Im sure there are voices and talent out there. But, I guess when they say, One of a Kind, it really is true.
This has to be right up near the top of the list of memorable Judy garland performances... it should be set alongside Sinatra's "Don't Like Goodbyes" from "Close to You" and Billie Holiday's "I Thought About You". I missed hearing it when it was issued in 2006 (I think I assumed it was the soundtrack re-hashed), and am extremely grateful to have heard it at last. Did singing ever get better than this?
WOWZER!!!!! What a find! Judy's singing was always "up close and personal" but this rendition takes the cake, she gave HER ALL on this one. God Bless.
It's funny I just watched a video of the live performance from ICGOS and commented on how stunning it is. I've always loved it. But this is amazingly beautiful. I can't thank you enough for posting it!
What an incredible treat to come across this haunting performance by Judy. It's another fascinating study in how she interpreted each beat of the music. There is no meaning left unfelt in her singing. She is the mistress of pacing her breath, slowly building to a climax like no other singer.
What is there that can possibly be said about this recording? I've been listening to her coming out of 200 watt computer speakers this weekend, over and over again. Thank you for adding this video, and for enriching a corner of my life.
LOVE this version!!! It's funny, but I think Judy sounds a bit hoarse on this one, however, it proves how amazing she was that it is still absolutely brilliant and moving. One of my favorite songs EVER. Thanks for posting!
@stevers62 The "hoarseness" you pick up is in fact a natural 'rasp' that Judy had in her singing voice. On many of her performances this is technically fine-tuned as it were to smooth our her voice. I much prefer her voice as it is here; I think she's kind of purring like a contented cat. She also sounds very confident.
Fantastic.. Is this a brand brand brand new version discovered in 2010? Or is it the one from a few years ago?? i.e the one she recorded for ICGOS but then scrapped it and sang it live on the set??
No, this is the one that was unearthed a few years ago, bringing it up to three very different versions recorded in 1963, not to mention the first recorded version from 1960.
@BuzzStephens1 Thank you for uploading this treasure. Just when I thought I had heard all Judy's great classic performances, along comes this.. mesmerizing and exquisite.
