It is odd that he is still searching for the 'yound soul rebels' while wearing a beanie hat and sporting a pencil moustache!! I would run off too.....well suspect! Great song though.
This was the true legacy of punk not all that Oi nonsense and that American hardcore bollocks but those individualists like Kevin Rowland and others in the early eighties who after seeing Johnny Rotten subvert the idea of what a frontman should be had the confidence to do their thing. The late seventies and early eighties had a brilliant do-it-yourself creativity that was eventually subdued by the corporate machine and it's determination to make docile morons of us and sell us their crap.
Every time I hear this I have vivid flashbacks of being young, carefree, music mad and loving life.... I am still the same, just older, carefree and loving life and music still.........
Flippin' phenomenally fantastic . Rare live vid of the first edition of Dexy's line up .... Wud luv some colour from the night pls bodaciousbabe? ..like were they starched?
Dexy's were one of many fantastic west midlands bans at the time (although they had a very different sound to the others). This is by far their best song its wonderful and stand the test of time.
turn it up feel the joy quality quality quality. Fuck me this is the best of our collective small islands. Its a thin line between bellend and genius ( borrowed roughly from chrissie hinds)!
Fuckin brilliant. In the early years I seemed to be in a minority of people who preferred this to Geno, as much as I loved that. Only Plan B comes close for me.
What I love is he sings some of the greatest songs that no one knows the freakin words to!!! great music, great voice....WHAT THE HELL IS ON ABOUT THOUGH???? lol
@freqeist I am American and I ain't thick. These Soul Rebels are the real deal. RIGHT ON! Never had no trouble understanding Dexy's and their sound. I LOVE NORTHERN SOUL!
i wanna be dressed like them, hung out like them, have a good pure 80s fun, drink like a horse, dance, fall in love and dance to this tune. Top blue eyed soul!
Notice how this kicks the ever-loving dogshit out of nearly everything available today. Woefully under-appreciated band (at least here in the States; not sure about the rest of the world).
Kevin Rowland should have an Ivor Novello for this. Look up the lyrics and you will not believe what he turned into a Top Ten soul hit. The man is lyrical genius
@Stoker1959 Please advise me as to where I can hear a sample of your world class drumming; so I can decide for myself whether or not I know what I am talking about.
@Stoker1959 So why didn't you just say 'It was me playing drums on that song; and not Bobby Ward!' In stead of getting all bolshy about it? I apologise if I offended you jeez u artistic types are touchy! Happy now?
@69shamboy I Thought That You Thought That Bobby Was The Man Not Knowing That You Really Thought That I Was The Man, In Doing That I Now Think I Was Mistaken What Do You Think?? I Am Precious About The Fabulous Dixons (That's What We Called Ourselves) I Can't Help Myself, Sorry About That......
@69shamboy Just Listen To "Searching For The Young Soul Rebels" That's Also Me In The Video Above.... Or You Could Listen To The 1st General Public Record... I Also Played The Drums On "Baby Come Back" UB40+Pato Banto Which I Also Produced... That Enough For Ya???.....
'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels is one of those rare albums in the it's perfect. If that's all Kevin ever did - he'd still be a hero in my house. What an uplifting record It IS the real deal.
Young Soul Rebels bound for The Flapper, Kingston Row, Birmingham for the celebration of Dexys Midnight Runners, 30th anniversary special event, on Saturday 17 July are in for a treat.
Hosted by Gavin Martin and featuring Paolo Hewitt, the event will reach a climax with a live set from Stone Foundation who will be joined onstage by original band members!!!
@erikcartman204 to his credit Kevin Rowland did admit years later that he had been a total dick in those years. He said he looked back and realised he had wasted what should have been great times by being too far up his own arse.
On 17 July 2010 there will be a gathering in Birmingham to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of 'Searching for the young soul rebels'.

Dear Robin
Youre always so happy, how the hell do you get your inspiration? Youre
like a dumb patriot. If youre supposed to be so angry, why dont you fight
and let me benefit from your right? Dont you know the only way to change
things is to shoot men who arrange things, Dear Robin
I would explain but youd never see in a million years.

Dear Robin
Hope you dont mind me writing, its just that theres more than one thing I
need to ask you. If youre so anti-fashion, why not wear flares, instead of
dressing down all the same. Its just that looking like that I can express
my dissatisfaction.
Dear Robin
Let me explain, though youd never see in a million years. Keep quoting
Cabaret, Berlin, Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, Duchamp, Beauvoir, Kerouac,
