You definitely have the voice for this song, but you needed to deliver it in a little more gutsy and straightforward way.
One of the pitfalls of the way you sing is that you sometimes get a little cute with your material. There are times for vocal decorations and others when you need to go straight for the throat and have to know when those are.
Listen to Billie Holiday (the series on Columbia, especially), Koko Taylor, Ike and Tina Turner and "Heart Like a Wheel" by Linda Ronstadt.
