  • my dog doesn't hold gently any object, in fact he chews hard and don't let go on anything he can find....any ideas how can I teach him to hold gently???

Thanks for your videos Tab, you really showed me there's another way rather than use force ;-)

  • @SuckAFatOne007 actually, you can use those pens that "click" when you open and click when you close them. Im sure you have on at home , like those :

    youtube.com/watch?v=zIRh4MOrsIM

  • My question is, how in the heck does anyone outside of the hollywood star making machine end up with such perfect teeth? What's up with that?

  • My dog will mouth anything I show her but she will not hold ANYTHING I give to her. She always drops it. How do I fix this?

  • man you are genius xDD

  • I dont have a clicker? Any other way i can do it without the clicker

  • @SuckAFatOne007 just get a clicker it's really worth it...and it barely costs anything.

  • 3:17 Holy crap!!! L0L

  • Hey, my dog is afraid of the bucket, now what?

  • @hornsr1 Maybe try giving your dog lots of treats around the bucket outside of training sessions so it learns to associate being near the bucket with good things? Also, you can try clicking and treating when he or she shows any interest in the bucket.

  • Hey, I've been working with my shepherd for a while on trying to learn 'hold it' but after sniffing the object once or twice, he gets distracted (even in a room with very, very few distractions) and I completely lose his attention. Do you have any tips on regaining attention for this? I've had this issue in the past with obedience training, since after doing something once or twice he completely zones out and I can't get his attention back. He knows 'watch me' and I try to make it fun.

  • My pitbull puppy would be like. Wtf? A NEW TOY!!! and run off with it.

  • You dog is smarter than average YouTube viewers...

  • I have heard that if u teach like this, it only respond when its rewarded.. so if not rewarded it wont do.. is it true.

  • Great guy.. I got a GSD.. female one. Practicing ur idea.

  • When I saw the egg I shit bricks.

  • Like other comments I've seen, my dog will sniff or barely put his mouth on the toy then immediately stop and back away. I reward him for what he does but he refuses to keep his mouth on the object. The same thing in fetch too. He'll chase the object then bring it within 6 feet of me, but never to me. Any ideas of how to get him to hold the object while he is in front of me?

  • hey man my dogs death, can i still teach him

  • @talanius1 Ummm... do you mean deaf? I heard instead of a clicker, people use a torch or movement. Flash the torch instead of clicking or clap :3

  • @SilverWhitzWolf =o ok il try that, thank you so much

  • Thks for this video!

  • Wow!! This is an exellent tutorial! Im amazed! Ur a veryyy good trainer!

  • Jackpot of all online videos!!! We are getting a golden retriever puppy and this is an excellent tutorial!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!

  • My dog took to mouthing the object fairly quickly using your methods, but is not moving on to consistantly holding. The strange thing is, if i put the object on the floor the dog picks up the toy, walks in a circle and drops the object next to me again. Any ideas?

  • @staggy916 yes,i have the same problem,my dog have a nice retrieve, but drop the object when sit in front.i try different method, from clicker to forced method but nothing really work...may be i do some mistake,so i also need help!!! my gsd do this exercise perfectly, but my border collie have problem.at the same time,to put toys in a box is his favourite game.so,what go wrong???

  • Will a dog naturally hold on to an object gently?

  • Can you teach me a trick how to persuade my mother to let me have a dog >>> sory for bad english :)

  • i cant wait to do this with my puppy!

  • 3:15 haha :))

  • hello....i have two questions...First my dog does not keep the object just bite and then leaves. How i can doing my dog to holding objects? How much snaks should give him? 30 snaks in every rewarding i think that are much. Thanks ( Sorry for my English i am from Greece so i do not know very good the language)

  • goood boy !!! drop the egg *drops* splat bad dog you mede a mess!!!

  • want your dog become fat with all of this tricks? :D

  • @BitGenerations Use dog food as a treat if you are worried about that.

  • What other treats can I give to my puppy when teaching him to do tricks because dog food treat is kinda expensive if u used it like everyday...

  • @kejikimchi just hide the dogs food bowl, but not water, and take the little dog food peices and use those as treats.

  • can you instead of saying drop it ( to the bucket ) say bucket? like after i learned her to drop it?

  • @bluebird778 yes thats what i did

  • LOL for the shoe & egg :)

  • wow, i have always been hooked on the dog whisperer, you are amazing! it's the patients you have, & the commitment that drew me, how you make the tricks happen, because you do it step by step! I think you should have your own tv show if you don't already have one! great job!!!!!!!

  • @66Melinda72 Don't you like this way of training better than what Cesar Millan does? Cesar uses force, flooding and incorrect domination. Dogs have to comply with what he says because he forces them to, not because he gives them a reason to WANT to. They also don't have fun and enjoy his training, he makes it such a negative experience for them.

  • now i dont have to clean my room

  • I would have done better in my exams if I had a teacher like you...

  • hello, ma name is yohana, and i have been trying to teach to hold it to my westie. He keeps chewing whatever i give him and drop it, i cannot get to make him hols it, do you have any tips??

    thnxs!

  • very good but one thing at 2:49 you clicked then when taking the hat away you said yes...yes means the same thing as the click (the promise of a treat) so you clicked then marked the behaviour of not holding the object.

but other than that good job

  • My dog will hold the object but then start to chew on it and walk off with it.

  • my dog doesnt understand to put the object in the bucket. i only give her a treat if she does put it in but she doesnt reallize she is and isnot catching on. how can i teach her to put in in the bucket better?

  • Comment removed

  • this was a fail for me. The video was good but my dog isnt lol. I tried teaching hold it with a ball and he ran off and started playing with it. Then i tried a rope toy and he started shaking it and quit paying attention to me. How can i get past that?

  • LOL 3:13 She is so stinking cute!

  • I've watched a couple of your videos. You're such a clear, understandable and great trainer! Can you teach a dog how to speak or say "I love you"?

  • lol at the dogs face when he had the shoe

  • My dog would just take the stuff and run away coz he loves to hold almost everything in his mouth (but not on command). Is there a way I can train him not to take the stuff that I'm using for training? There is no need for free shaping coz he would just hold it in as soon as I bring it towards him. HELP!

  • Great teaching style. Just watch you motivates me to movtivate my dogs.

  • Hi My dog at first has interest with what I have then I reward him and this last about 3 times then he just stares at me and every time I put the thing in front of him he moves his head away and just stares at me againHELP!!

  • Very clear and concise video! Nicely done. You are obviously well prepared and sensible when you speak. Very intuitive video.

  • how old is she in this video

  • Haha, my dog would of cracked the egg in her mouth! :P

  • I can get to the point where my dog (acd) will hold and take things, but he drops them right away. Any ideas?

  • wondering what kind of clicker your are using - a simple box clicker? It's loud.

  • I have to ask, I have a gsp, and he doesn't seem to like to hold stuff, I'm having real troubles getting him to even mouth stuff, I'm taking it steady, but he seems to be able to outwait me at times, he just lays down and looks at me if he doesn't get it... I"ve watched both your videos on teaching fetch/hold... and neither method seems to be working... am I just expecting too much too soon?

  • WOW. your dog must be really talented to be able to hold an egg in her mouth and not crush it!

  • This is great. My Boston loves to fetch and bring things to us, but he will go to give it to us and then run. The run is because he wants you to play with him. He also figured out that when the timer on the microwave goes off something in the oven is cooking and he goes straight to the oven or microwave. Love the videos!!!

  • my dog - she's a chow chow and already knows lots of tricks - thinks I want her to try to destroy the object! no matter how I try to show her that I just want her to hold it for me, she'll take it, lie down and start chewing on it :(

  • @eveelima

mine does the same thing...he also knows other tricks but he can't seem to get this one down at all!

  • this video has me hooked! :)

  • my dog gets extemley nervous when i try to teach her somthing. but she is a border collie so she should not be lazy. is there anyway to get her in a good move and her not get nervous

    she is so stubbourn

  • @ikidreviews

I had the same problem with my border collie mix. To get it where she isn't nervous. when you are teaching her tricks you need to be calm if you are frustrated annoyed or if you expect her to learn it quickly she can sense it. try to use an exiting voice so she knows that learning tricks is fun and means rewards. Good luck.

  • I like this video a lot and would like to teach my Boston Terrier these things however, before I even start I have a question. I can already anticipate, Fezzik, just wanting to bite the object I'm presenting him. In other words I predict him simply wanting to play tug of war or running off with the object. Any suggestions?

  • my shihtzu male dog only puts it in his mouth for not even a second and then drops it...i cant get him to keep it in his mouth

  • I'm kinda confuses about adding the word. Do you do it.... I don't know.

  • how long do you recomend a trainng sessions should be at home when i train my 5mth old lab cross?.

  • my dog won't hold on to the object for more than two seconds. plz help me.

  • HELP! I can't get my dog to keep holding an object. She drops it after two seconds and then expects an award. I try over and over again for her to hold the ball in her mouth, but she starts to bark at me in frustration. Don't know what to do.

  • my dog COMPLETELY ignores the object:(

  • another great, clear, concise, and well structured tutorial. i'm fairly well inclined when it comes to dog training, and i really enjoy your videos. how about a tutorial on how to get your dog to roll over, or cover his eyes?

  • you are awsome !!

  • My dog is a Siberian Husky and does not seem to understand the clicker. I've been working with him for months and he just doesn't get it.

  • Great thing to learn! Question, pls: What word do you use to indicate that 'drop it' is anything other than at your feet? And how do you tell them WHICH bucket or whatever you want it put in. Presumably at some point you will need to use an alternate container. Thanks! These are GREAT videos!

  • my dog just the stuff from my hand and drop it constantly.... do you know any other way to teach her to hold it?

  • my dog just the stuff from my hand and drop it constantly.... do you know any other way to teach her to hold it?

  • my dog just the stuff from my hand and drop it constantly.... how to teach her to hold it?

  • How long did this take

  • I love the egg, very impressive.

  • I have trained my dog to fetch things but he has problems sometimes finishing the command completely and decides to drop the object before he returns to me. This video will surely help a lot! Good job!

  • I just love her face when she's holding that shoe! Great job training; it's lovely to see her so happily engaged in the game! :-)

  • very good trainer

  • Tab your videos are great. I have a German Shepherd as well, they're great dogs and very easy to train. I've taught my dog to put her toys away as well however I went at it a little differently. She knows the name of all her toys and I have to instruct her to put each toy away by name. After watching this video, your method seems to be more practical. How did you make the transition into having your dog pick up all the toys at once? Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

  • Amazing demonstration! This is the same method I use for most of my training except I use well placed verbal marks instead of the clicker. I LOVE that you incorporated the "drop it" at the end!!

  • AMAZING well trained dog!!!!!!! Maybe you can try to teach bow?

My dog is nothing like that:)

  • AMAZING well trained dog!!!!!!! Maybe you can try to teach bow?

  • Brilliant brilliant brilliant! THANK YOU!! Really lovely dog too.

  • This video was very helpful in teaching my dog the hold command. Now I am making him hold everything LOL. I added a couple of slideshows fearturing his hold :-) Thanks for your tips.

  • Hey. I have a shepherd, just like yours. He is 16 weeks today. He knows sit, give paw, and lay down. Ya know, the basics. Do you think I would be able to teach him to clean up?

  • @zachingves Not yet

  • Hey there, I don't know if you can help but, I taught my dog "take it" but I can't seem to get her to hold it. As soon as she grabs it she drops it, I know the guides say to wait for a couple seconds before I click but she drops it without clicking or throws it at me (lol) I think it's because when I first taught her "take it" I was teaching fetch as well, so I skipped the holding part on accident. I taught her to drop ball in a box, thanks to your video, by the way. Any tips? Love your videos!

  • @strawberrycats I know I'm not the creator of the video but I think you may want to take a step back. Start from the beginning. Start by holding the object and having her mouth it. Just like he did in the video. That way she doesn't have the option of dropping or throwing it. Only reward for a 2 second hold or so, and then gradually increase the length of time that she holds. Then start to hold it lighter and lighter until you are no longer holding it. I hope that helps.

  • @killerschnauzer O my gosh thanks! First of thanks for replying, I didn't know if anyone would... Second, thanks for the idea, I didn't think of that! I'm going try it with her new toy :) Thanks again...

  • lol my cat is really enjoying your vids xD

  • Omg, her expressions are priceless!

  • Tab, My dog THIRD are thesame as your dog! When I put an object above his head he stands up and plays with it!

  • I got a dog named Third its so easy for him to sit. But I can't teach him how to fetch! :/

  • Hey Tab,

Can you tell me where can i buy the treats that you use for training your dog ... ?

    Thanks alot! .... Suscribed!.

  • I dont have a clicker, and my parents dont want me to get one, how can i still train my puppy without it?

  • @SAMUELSAAVEDRA1 you don't "need" a clicker, the only reason he recommends a clicker is because it's a consistent sound that is associated with a treat, you can use a phrase as long as you keep it consistent. I tried using a clicker with my GSD and it just confused him and made him tilt his head to the side whenever I clicked it so I don't use one now lol

  • @Fareplayy thanks actually helped alot, now i just need a word to use lol

  • can you do a tutorial on the bang bang trick when you hould out a finger gun and you go bang and they play dead

  • @thecoolkidlkb Okay, sure. :-)

  • my dog can hold it but then run away... :(

  • This is something I've been wanting to teach my dog! This tutorial seems easy enough to follow, going to start training my boy to do this. :D Thanks!

  • Would this work with a Greyhound? She can't really carry things easly. Is there anything I could do about that?

  • @GirFan3443 It should work. Just take it slow. You could start with an object that is easier to carry and lighter in weight.

  • @tab289 Thank you so much ^^

  • How soft is your dog's mouth!! Really impressed. If I gave my shepherd a water bottle he'd crunch right down on it. He's very mouthy. Is this something you can teach?

  • Comment removed

  • my dog can hold it,

but she lets go off it immediaetly..

    what should I do?

  • Your dog is absolutely beautiful! Thanks for the video :)

  • @tab289 Im a huge fan of your, and im even following on facebook.

My dog just wouldnt leave the object he's holding in his mouth! HELP ME! I need a really high value treat to make him drop the object but when the treat isnt there,he wouldnt leave it. Pls make a video on how to fade away the treat.

  • Great video!!! LOL @ her holding the egg. Her face was so cute!

  • tab289, Im so confused. All the tricks look so easy when I see u and ur dog. But when Im trying to work out these with my dog, It becomes soo difficult. I have a 9mo lab pup. and im really working hard with him but he seems to learn only a few things. For eg. in this trick, i tried with different toys. With some he would just not make any interactions, with others he would just become so possessive of that when I try to takem back, he' growl. Finally, he'd learn nothing. HELP.

  • HOW MANY MINUTES I CAN TRAIN MY DOG A DAY??

  • I LOVED THE WAY YOU TRAIN THE DOG N US, THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEOS, I JUST GOT A GS FOM THE SHELTER I A PUPPY BUT WAS VERY SCARED OF THE COMMITMENT, BUT WITH YOUR HELP IT SEEMS IT WILL BE EASY, I PAID ATTENTION THAY CALMNESS IS THE KEY. TAKE CARE AND THANK YOU AGAIN

  • my dog is a six month old puppy (very energetic ) she also gets commands confused if i tell her to sit she might down. on the trick she will only touch the toy with her paw and then she gets confused after that. what do i do?

  • wow ur awesome i cant wait untill i get my dog ill subscribe

  • One question; wouldn't the dog figure out to not only do that unless it get's a treat or reward ? And If so how do I make the dog to do it without just rewarding it ?

  • Thanks for the videos... really useful to have action with the theory!

  • Comment removed

  • I just showed him this video...HE LEARNED!

  • My dog is really difficult to clicker train .. she gets overly excited when I have treats around, and wont respond to what I want her to do.

  • @Makoce Maybe you could try and ask for less? For example, some dogs that find it difficult to provide eye contact, we initially reward for just a head-turn. Once the dog understands they have to do things to get rewarded, they won't be as difficult to train !

  • @tab289 Thanks, I actually got her holding it for a second or two, and I click and treat. But I cant seem to work up longer times of holding it, she immediatly just drops it.

  • Awesome trick. can this be done with a toy poodle? also can i use put your toys away? would that be the same and work?

  • @vidgirl4444 You definitely can!

  • Great video, How many treats would you give in a training session?

  • thanks your videos are so clear and helpful!

  • great video! thank you so much for the video

  • Thanks for all the videos! I'm a huge fan!

I've got my lab doing this, but I'm having trouble teaching him to find something and bring it to me. I would like him to be able to sniff out an object - the same object (let's say his favorite toy) and bring it to me on command. Similar to having a dog bring you the leash or bring you a beer, except he has to find the object first. Thoughts?

  • @IRsuperman A toy would likely not smell strong enough for the dog to locate it with just his nose...but you can still teach him to look for it with his eyes! I am working on a video about sniff work...

  • @tab289 hey thanks - I finally got the trick trained and it's a pretty big hit with guests. (see my videos since it seems I can't post a link to it) I gave you credit as the holding part was key! And he definitely recognizes the waldo toy - thanks for the eye training tip. Working on "clean up" now.

  • Love this! So helpful as my puppy is having difficulty with these skills and my older dog did them naturally. I really appreciate that you show and talk about a variety of techniques. Thanks so much!

  • Very nice. I may try to teach a couple neat things to my mom's dog over the summer.

  • hello there :) i have a problem with my dog holding objects in her mouth, She always chews on them while holding. I'd really appreciate if you could tell me how to teach her to hold an object in her mouth without crunching on it. I love the way Solea holds things gently and without leaving toothmarks on them :)) thank you

  • Cool. That makes it easier!

  • Impressive teaching tutorial! Fantastic. I will definitely start the training. one question though. When the puppy or dog behaves badly like shredding the newspaper, is a negative enforcement bad?

  • @kkgg527 Ideally, they should never be put in a situation where shredding can happen because it may be 'fun' to shred the paper for the dog, thus reinforcing the behavior of doing it. Prevention is the most effective tool! If an accident happens, then it's an opportunity for us to learn from, not necessarily an invitation to offer punishment. Hope this helps.

  • Great work, man.

  • I really love your videos, and am looking forward to a summer full of teaching all these tricks to my dogs! One is a German Shepherd, and the other a German Shepherd x Border Collie. I started this trick, and they both got to the point of biting the object very quickly, but I can't get them to hold onto it. I will repeat lots of times them just biting onto the object, then I try letting go when they bit it, and they just drop it. Any ideas what to try? Thank you!

  • @MaxD3 Sounds like you are on the right track. I would try letting go very slowly over a few sessions and reward for even a millisecond of holding it. Eventually, click only for holding it. It can take a little patience but once they get into the habit of offering behaviors, it will be a breeze. Hope this helps.

  • excellent work...keep it up..

  • woah solea!an egg! and thanx for answering my suggestion!

  • Awesome Tab! Break it down brilliantly! Thanks so much!

  • Awesome!!! thanks!!!

  • I really love your videos, thanks a lot!

  • that video was great tab ! lol. Was it soleas first training seesion on this? I luv your videos. Please put more on. I don't want to wait another week. :-D

  • @nataliawasilewska97 She is familiar with this cue, but that was the first time she held onto a hat in the first step.

  • Nice Training, love the positive of Clicker Training :o)

  • Hi!!! Nice video, very well explain!! Thanks for sharing!!!!!

  • Excellent vid. I believe learning to pick dif items up and giving them to you is one of the most imp lessons to teach a puppy. the puppy then learns that bringing items to you is much more rewarding than running off with them...it sets your relationship up with understanding and success from the begining:)

  • @MultiAnimalcrackers I agree!

  • What a student Solea is! Great lesson.

  • @rubyboxerdog Thank you! Much appreciated.

  • Ever since I taught Timmy "Tidy Up" any time the silver bucket is out he puts everything in the room that fits into the bucket. lol

  • I love watching Solea work things out, she is so darn beautiful! Nice tutorial, I'm gonna try it this way, I think it might work with Mi, she likes shaping.

  • @tehrenberg Great! Let me know how she takes to it.

  • Great traiining video Tab & Solea! I have been wanting to teach Jake this trick, he leaves his toys everywhere lol

  • @JakeVomRivergreen I hope it helps! Solea also makes a mess sometimes, just so she can clean it up afterwards!

  • awesome video!:) I can't wait to teach it to my dog:)

  • impressive work i must say can't wait to teach it to my dog keep it up cuz you are doing a really good job

  • @regelemufasa Thank you!

  • nice ^^

  • good video, I've always had trouble with getting my dog to hold something for me, maybe this will give me the motivation I need to teach her : D

  • yess frist =P

  • @spikyskate5o1 Nice! Congrats!
